We are very happy to help with any issues, whether you are a trial user or a customer. It sounds like your system does not have X11 installed. Please see our reply to comment below by JDFOSTER.

The program opens, but it will not read any .exe files. Keep getting an error message telling me that "the program is unable to unpack this file". Any suggestions?

It sounds like your system does not have X11 installed. You can find this on your OS X Installation DVD, named X11User.pkg; install this package first, then you can launch Macindows. Most Snow Leopard systems come with X11 pre-installed, but we have noted that some customers on Leopard or those who upgraded from 10.5 to 10.6 may not have this package on their system.

Positively impressed by this product.
Although no installed applications ever shows in the "Programs" menu, Macindows is a convenient way of running Windows applications on my Mac.
Thanks and keep up the good work :)

Thanks for your encouragement Damien. The Programs menu depends on whether or not the software in question creates the standard menu items under Windows. Some don't. They only create a desktop shortcut. Macindows relies on the program installer setting up the app correctly, which it then translates to Mac menu items.

Superb product. It isn't a substitute for the big boys in emulator software that need and use windows but this software has niche market for those of us that hate windows and just need something to run the odd exe file without the bloat.

Thanks for the quick fix and a great start with Macindows!

Very impressive. I tried Macindows with a few small games and some other stuff and it performed quite well. This small foot-print program easily has a niche market for those of us that hate Windows and would prefer not to pay the higher prices for VMWare Fusion , CrossOver or Parallels Desktop.

I do have a few suggestions.

- A proper copy and paste menu with keyboard shortcuts like the normal one we see in all Mac native applications. I was unable to copy or paste any text from within Macindows. I even tried the copy command from it's menu and the keyboard shortcuts.

- A warning for nOObs in the system requirements they need to have X11 installed from their Mac OS X installer DVD

Great job, looking forward to what's to come with this very handy program.

(Oops, posted comments on your review to previous thread. Reposting here.)

Thanks for the useful review Roaming Nomad. Copy and Paste do actually work, but they are tied to the Control key as per Windows, rather than the Command key. Macindows has a special modification which lets Windows software interact with the Mac pasteboard directly rather than through the X11 clipboard. The latter route fails to register Rich Text. However, as you say, having to use Control is a bit confusing for Mac users. Macindows needs to map Command to Control. We'll work on that for a future version.

Version 0.4 is now available. It fixes the Command+C to Control+C copy function, as you requested. Hit Command+C to copy from your Windows apps as per Mac standard.

Thanks for your feedback. There is also CrossOver, of course, for which users pay much more; and Wine via MacPorts. However Macindows is designed to fit in-between CrossOver and WineBottler: not as expensive or complex as CrossOver, but not as close to the command-line as other approaches. The Macindows goal is easy to use, easy to upgrade, or as close to zero-hassle as reasonably possible.

Got the same problem as below, the application crashes immediately upon launch. However I do have x11 installed. In fact, I was able to launch freeciv (which uses x11) without any issues.

So what's up? I'm seriously considering purchasing this software if it does what it's supposed to do.

I really this software.

BUT

The copy and paste still does not work and with v0.8 neither does any of the COMMAND key menu commands now too once you open a windows program. The all just beep and nothing more.

Please fix this already. I have been patiently waiting to purchase this but I will not until the copy and paste commands work. Disabling the command key menu commands after opening a program is a step backwards too!

Thank you for the great program but please fix it it already!

Dear Nomad,

Thanks for your feedback. We are currently working on the Control-versus-Command issues, trying to get the best Mac-compatible solution possible. At present Wine+X11 is not ideal on Mac since X11 is not exactly well integrated with Mac; more of an afterthought! However, our current plans include steps to improve this situation.

IE7 does not work very well under Wine. Please see http://appdb.winehq.org/appview.php?iVersionId=4195. Support is rated at best as Silver, at worst as Bronze. Sorry about that.

"Bandwidth Limit Exceeded" when I try to download the demo.

I think the developer may want to find another site to host the download from to avoid this in the future.

The bandwidth exceeded message back again. It's such a shame because this program has some serious promise and potential.

You really need to find an alternative site to host the file from. Otherwise people cannot log onto your site and try to purchase this gem every time this bandwidth message pops up.
