Virtual CD-RW

I tried this on both macOS 12 and macOS 11. macOS 12 doesn't work at all whereas the CDRW does appear in the finder in macOS 11 but does not work with Apple Music, which is 99% of the appeal as it'd allow users to faux-burn lossless tracks and re-important them DRM free so they can be used with older devices (iPods) or other audio applications. This app seems to be broken with modern macOSes, as it relies on a kext hack, and whitelisting the said security service. Hint, the instructions do not tell you the name of the software service to be whitelisted: It's Robert Wiebe. I did verify at least the uninstaller does what it says, using Pacificist to check to see if it was truly uninstalled. Also subscription services suck, especially if the app isn't maintained.

Does not work *at all* on Monterey. It literally does nothing.

Doesn't support DVD images

Never could get it to work properly because of license issues. Not worth the time.

Crazy expensive for what it does. The price on the official site is now $25, so down from the original $30 quoted here on MU, right? No! Sneakily, they turned it into a subscription and if you read the purchase terms carefully it now says "$24.95 USD for each year". Why does a simple kernel extension like this need recurring payments?? Thanks, but no, thanks.

I completely agree with Ochre. I would be interested in a virtual cd driver as well, but not at that price. Make it available for half of that or do a promotion and you got yourself a buyer.

This works as described, but is definitely too expensive for what it is. FWIW, I would pay €12/US$16 for this, but no more. One issue: this interferes with the Eject button on computers with two optical drives already installed, preventing use of the Option-Eject keystroke to open/close the second drive.

Works exactly as advertised! Fantastic for "burning" iTunes CDs. Super easy-to-use; flawless operation.

Ok, so i read the reviews and decided to try this application. I was really rooting for this app but its unfortunately not as good as i had hoped. Another user mentioned that Itunes doesn't recognize it..well i can confirm that this is true. Unfortunately Itunes does NOT see the virtual disc despite the rest of the OS clearly showing that is mounted. This saddens me

The software is good but licence too expensive and only valid for one computer. I need to buy another licence for my Macbook Pro. I'll wait for another software less expensive. I never buy two licences for my two computers.

OK for creating file discs, but does not work as general system wide CD burner. For example, iTunes does not recognize the virtual drive. Also, if you have your system setup to ignore inserted blank media, then virtual cd-rw will lock up, not work again until after you restart.

After changing the Mac, the registration process doesn't work anymore. Unfortunately, there is no email address on the website of the developer anymore. Does someone know, how to contact the developers in this case? Thank you for anyones replay. Regards

What I need is a program like this, only for DVD. I have one of those kits that lets me remove my DVD drive from my MBP and replace it with a second drive. I now use an external DVD player/burner. But unless it's plugged in, Apple's DVD Player won't work. And I don't like VLC. If I could have a virtual DVD drive, it would probably solve that problem. Anyone know of any kind of program like that? Thanks.

There are only two reasons why I leave reviews: either I love the product and want to preach its virtues or I hate the product and want to warn others. I can honestly say that this is the first time I have felt ripped off by an OS X developer. In short, this software does not work for long. I downloaded the demo and that proved stable and functional. However, when I purchased the license, the app stopped working after about a week and reverted to the nag of "Buy Now" or "Quit" in the drop down menu. I contacted the developer who advised that I must have downloaded an "old" version (I had previously downloaded directly from their website). Reinstalled the app and that resolved the problem for about two days this time. Several re-installations later and the app just doesn't work. Very disappointing! I've given up and written it off completely.

Just an aside: Perhaps the developer could proactively prevent some of the misconceptions about Virtual CD-RW if they were to create and post a few tutorial videos on the benefits the software offers as well as how/why people would want to use it.

This software seems to be misunderstood, unfairly judged, or both. I'm not rating this software based on what I wish it did or what think it should do. I'm rating it based on what it does compared to what I was promised, and whether it did it well or not. Quite simply: It does what it says it does, is easy to use (just follow the included instructions,) and for me it did it without any stability issues. I am not too keen on the pricing or licensing terms, but that is only 1/4 of the review equation. If you want to be able to create a virtual cd of DRM protected music, here is what you do: Per the included instructions: 1. Install the app. 2. Restart your computer. 3. Select "New Media" from the menu bar icon. A new, blank virtual cd will now be mounted and visible on your desktop or in the finder sidebar. Next make sure iTunes is properly set up: 1. Open iTunes and go to Preferences 2. Under the General tab, click the "Import Settings..." button. Make sure to set format to MP3 if you want to be able to burn MP3 data discs. 3. Close preferences. 4. Add the DRM protected songs you want to burn to the virtual cd to a playlist just as you would to burn to a regular music cd. 5. Right click the playlist, select "Burn Playlist to Disc." 6. In the dialog box, select "Virtual CD RW" as the Disc Burner dropdown menu. Make sure Audio CD is selected below. Click Burn. It will take all of 10 seconds in most cases to create the virtual music CD. When it is one, you'll see your new virtual music cd show up under "Devices" in your iTunes sidebar. Right click it, select "Import CD." Done. My music is now DRM free. It literally took me less than 3 minutes and I encountered no problems. Apologies for any typos or grammatical errors. Excerpt from the"Read First.pdf" of this app: "Virtual CD-RW is licensed on a per computer basis. You need to purchase a license for each computer. If you purchase a new computer you will also need to purchase a new copy of Virtual CD-RW." NO WAY! I even did't install the Trial. Why should I? I'm going to buy a new Mac next year. A licensing model like this is very rude against every user! ------ My rating is about the licensing and not the software itself... -------
