TaskCard overview

TaskCard for Mac is a nimble and easy-to-use yet deceptively powerful app for taking notes, designing outlines, and organizing projects. It gives you a dedicated workplace where you can organize all your ideas, keep your notes, and plan anything you want. TaskCard was designed from the ground up to be a totally unique experience on the Mac, while taking full advantage of the latest features OS X has to offer.

Professionals, students, and casual writers alike will appreciate TaskCard's unique approach to working with ideas, while benefiting from it's powerful feature set.

Some of the features include:

  • Events that integrate with your Mac’s calendar and other devices
  • Attach other content like: files, URL’s, images, and more
  • Document-less interface and "sheets" for managing content
  • Full-featured sticky notes for writing

What’s new in version 2.0.8

Updated on Nov 02 2017

Version 2.0.8:
  • Fixed: Dashboard mode bug in 10.13 High Sierra when switching apps.
  • Fixed: Dragging root card onto itself is no longer possible (which would cause a crash in previous versions).
  • New: For users with multiple displays cards now save their position independently for each display.
  • New: Copying and pasting files inserts them as hyperlinks that open the file in the Finder instead of displaying a document icon like before.
  • Fixed: Paste and always match style maintains style after typing (oops!).

I'm using this to take notes during and organize thoughts after scheduled Skype foreign language lessons. I naturally lean towards making outline lists when note-taking, which works wonderfully in TaskCard. I haven't yet taken advantage of the TaskCard-Calendar integration, but I'm happy that for a cross-platform user like myself, Gmail calendars can be manipulated by Calendar using TaskCard. (I'm an Android person with a Mac. Blasphemy!) There are still times where this app crashes for me. Notably, I can't seem to nest existent cards inside other existent cards, although I seem to be able to do this with blank cards easily enough. I also experienced problems when trying to maximize a card, wherein I was stuck on a separate desktop from my maximized card, but was eventually able to go to Window > Zoom to get out of full screen mode. I hope the dev is still actively developing -- it seems to have been six months since the blog last updated -- but regardless of future developments, I think $15 is a reasonable price for something that will prevent me from falling back on my terrible old workflow of having half a dozen TextEdit windows open at a time, trying to remember which ones to save on shutdown and which to delete. Ability to export to RTF, MD, HTML, TXT, or anything more portable than proprietary format would bring this up to 5 stars, even with the occasional crash.

The very best thing about this GTD app - a feature I have yet to find in any similar app - is its "Reminder" function, which lets you configure the pop-up reminder to run repeatedly at intervals. This is GREAT for keeping you from forgetting to do something. Unfortunately, TaskCard is kind of clunky to use, and not very flexible in making lists. For example, I'd like to be able to create a task item that has multiple paragraphs for short notes - I was unable to find a way to do this relatively simple thing (just implement Shift-Return for this, problem solved). And it's highly unstable. It crashes frequently when doing simple things like adding a new card, adding a new task, or just opening or closing the interface. I don't regret the purchase...supporting innovative, useful software is good. But it's not getting used because of its flaws. I look forward to future updates.

Trial version is crashing often when I click one of the task windows in OS X 10.6.4, especially when trying to open a collapsed panel (100% chance of crash). Aside from the crashing, this would be a nice app if it was a little more convenient to use. Would be nice to have some quick input methods using keyboard and/or context menu and an option to hide completed tasks. Rating this a 2 because the crashing makes this app almost unusable. Otherwise, would rate 3 stars.

I lik the concept, but the execution is not very good. About the only reliable way to add attachments to a task is through the menu item. Dragging and dropping did not work for me much at all (only 1 time in several dozens tries). There're some other quirky behaviors with windows that you have to click on in just the right place in order to drag them around. The same goes if I want to move a task around. Could be nice if it got rid of these behaviors.

Nice concept, but crashes on 10.6.1 while editing or working in demomode while adding tasks.
