I purchased version 2.1 and recently thought to reinstall it on my new Macbook Air. Albeit, I found that the software was only available on the AppStore with a crippled demo on the developer's website. As I didn't find any way to enter my valid serial number I contacted the developer. Here's the reply:

"The transition of ToThePoint Software's products to the Mac App Store creates an upgrade issue for existing version users. The structure of the Mac App Store leaves users of versions previous to the App Store version out of the free upgrade loop. However, a one-time purchase of the app through the App Store guarantees the buyer free and automatic upgrades for all future releases. Apologies for this unfortunate situation but I really cannot afford to ignore the huge market available through the Mac App Store."

Well, I cannot afford to pay again for the same version 2.x of a one-trick-pony software that only use occasionally and which, at the time of purchase, I was guaranteed to receive free upgrades for any version 2.x! Stay away from TTP Software. This is a developer who doesn't respect his customer base. I for one will not register any of their products again.

I am working on a system that will allow registered users to download the latest version from www.ttpsoftware.com for free. Sorry, but these things take time to work out. I am still learning the ins and outs of the App Store restrictions.

There is now a non-App Store version available to download at http://www.ttpsoftware.com. It is v2.4.2 and will recognize registrations purchased with previous versions of Font Sleuth.

My more thorough review was included in my response to the previous reviewer, but I wasn't able to add a start rating with that response.

Font Sleuth makes it really easy to see what's in your collection and to compare similar font styles so that you can find the perfect font for whatever project you are working on.

Almost everything this does can be done (and sometimes better) in Linotype FontExplorer X Pro while running in trial mode (free forever). Register FEX and it will open up advanced features, but even the demo version still leaves Font Sleuth wanting for the asking price. Not impressed.

When you open the trial version of FontExplorer X Pro a message box opens stating "This copy of FontExplorer X Pro is not licensed. It can be used as a trial version with full functionality (with the exception of FontExplorer X Server connectivity) for another 30 days."

Font Explorer X Pro is actually $89 once the free trial is over and even though it has some additional features for the power user, many (most?) users will find Font Sleuth addresses their needs at a fraction of the cost.

Then something has changed. I have FEXP from way back, and it is still functioning just fine... after four-plus years at least.

Correction. My mistake. I have the basic rather than "pro" version installed right now... which appears to be no longer distribution directly from Linotype but is still available...

And it is still better.

I have to jump in and say that I think Font Sleuth is fantasic, and I'm surprised to read this comment which suggests the Font Sleuth isn't worth the asking price. This application is a great tool for managing fonts and displaying line samples effectively even when the fonts are nested in folders and uninstalled. It is exactly what I was looking for (and much more) in the pursuit of an application which could help me to manage my font library, and to effectively group my favorite fonts together and create printouts of my library. It makes finding fonts easy.

While FontExplorer may have a few more features for users who need to go deeper, it doesn't change that fact that this program is going to cover most of the same ground for a heck of a lot less. Font Sleuth does almost all the things that most average users would need in an interface that is every bit as professional.

I think Font Sleuth is one of the best $15 I have ever spent on a software product, and the developer is continuing to update the product and offers terrific customer service.

In any case, you can't go wrong since you can decide for yourself by downloading the free trial. I'm sure that most users will be delighted with this app and will realize that it does all they need it to do. I'm really glad I found it.
