eMaps was a great app until Google pulled the back end for it. I have been searching for an alternative since that dreadful day a few months ago. The best solution that I have been able to turn up is Fluid, the site specific browser.

With Fluid, you can create a web app for Google Maps. It's pretty simple to do. All you need to give it to create a web app is a URL.

Fluid is free, but there is a paid version for some extra features, such as separate cookie storage.

I'm another daily eMaps user with my fingers crossed, hoping that Emanuele brings eMaps back. In addition to Google Maps and Street View, I appreciated the access eMaps provided to Open Street Map. If you're looking for an OSM map replacement, try the free myOSM on the Mac App Store. It's from the developer of myTracks, which gets 4.5 stars here on MacUpdate.

Very nice. Thanks for the tip, Miocinq. I had 2.7.5 archived and that seems to work fine. Not sure why dev doesn't make 2.7.8 available until the other issues are sorted.

Hello. The developer told me that he would one day rewrite the code but didn't say when. I suggest you use http://www.instantstreetview.com until then. It's the nearest thing to eMaps. Unfortunately for the time being there's little we can do except keeping hope against hope! Fariborz

I emailed Emanuele about this and received a quick reply:

"I'm very sad to tell you that eMaps does not work anymore.

Today Google has turned down Maps API services used by eMaps to display maps.

At this point I have to rewrite a large part of my app from scratch.

I'll try to do it in my free time, but this work could take some time.

Thank you all for your support."

That's the long and short of it. Hopefully there will be a resolution.

This is indeed sad news. I use eMaps so intensively for my job that doing without it is simply more than flesh and blood can stand! Let’s hope for the best that Emanuele would do something about this inconvenience and bring a profound smile to our faces. In the meantime, those who like me can’t live without eMaps can go to http://www.instantstreetview.com and take a look at it. It’s indeed a survival kit but for the time being is better than nothing! Thank you Zampon for your information.

I wrote to Emanuele - the developer of eMaps who kindly explained to me the reasons why eMaps had suddenly ceased to function. They are basically what Zampom commented here except that the developer hopes he would one day rewrite the codes for a new version in his free time. Until then we have to stick to other possible solutions. Please read my previous comment for a solution that hasn’t all the bells and whistles of eMaps but does its job properly and partially fills the gap. As for exporting the places where labels are saved I invite aliw4009 to contact directly the developer. He’s a very kind soul and will surely work you through it. You can find his email at the bottom of "eMaps Quick Help”. All the best to all eMaps users.

thx Fariborz, tried the instant street though not ideal. I use emaps like you...to pinpoint customers and google maps just has too much clutter. If you find an alternative in the absence of emaps [which we might have to accept won't return] do post/pass on link

@aliw4009: places are saved in ~/Library/Preferences/eMapa.plist

In the next few days I will release an "update" that will allow you to open the menu places and export all saved places to a KML file.
At this time I can't do anything else...

Thanks to all,

Emanuele

Still no GPS?
I can't believe there is still not app like on an iphone for a Mac.
ow hard can it be to add GPS, all they would have to do is read the coordinates from the device, then know exactly where you are.
WE NEED GPS ON THE MAC!!!
Please add it.

Yeah, totally stupid. There are so many handheld GPS devices that the Mac can communicate with (iPhone, many BlueTooth devices, etc), so there's really no excuse to not work with GPS at this point. It really needs an update bad!

I get a blank map in ver. 3.0.0 on OS X 10.6.8, and the toolbar controls are faded out cannot be clicked. Ver. 2.9.9.1 works just fine.

NB: I don't have Flash installed (except for the plug-in that Google Chrome installs for itself). I would think Flash is only necessary for Street View, not for any of the other Google Maps functions.

Very Nice re-skinning and integration. I like it.
I do not want to skew ratings with question, but for the life of me I cannot figure something out How do I make it "find" me ?, and use my current actual current location on the map? Everything else is very easy to customize and figure out, but I want function to find me where I am right now, as starting point for map and directions search and navigation. Thank you for this very nice freeware

This feature would require Mac OS X 10.6 or newer (although it doesn't work properly with Snow Leopard and a non-wireless connection, as in my case). Anyway, now eMaps requires at least Mac OS X 10.6 to run, and therefore the "find me" feature, sooner or later, will come in a future update.
Thanks for your appreciation.
