Rule interface allows background file organization.

Overview

AutoFiler is part of the Automaton suite of products.

AutoFiler uses a simple rule interface so to organize your files for you in the background. Filter on name, type, date, tags and Spotlight attributes. Move or copy files, set color labels, import into iTunes or iPhoto, archive and backup, and more. Let AutoFiler work silently in the background while you get some real work done. AutoFiler can also manage your Trash, emptying it according to your own rules, and it can even clean up after deleted applications by discarding the support files.

Mmmm, yes it is a tool which manipulates files, so be careful. Without any more details of why you "lost files", it is hard to comment further.

I used Hazel and tried Autofiler to see if there was more features. Not many differences, so I stayed with Hazel. However, it worked fine and didn't use much ressources. @Colette: how could you lose files? The Trash is not a folder you want to archive your data into. More seriously, get HoudahSpot to look for your lost items. Sure, they're somewhere.

It's a bit disconcerting to examine just how closely this app resembles an existing utility called Hazel from Noodlesoft. While it's not uncommon to find different apps that perform similar sets of functions, AutoFiler's feature set and especially its user interface are nearly identical to Hazel's. I'm all for competition, and AutoFiler even seems to improve upon some of Hazel's features while charging half the price. It just seems awfully coincidental that two independently developed apps would end up looking so much alike.
