I'm not sure if it's cause for alarm, but this installs a kernel extension. Though it's most likely being used for DRM purposes, tread lightly. Sony doesn't have the best reputation with this kind of thing.

I use this to borrow books from library. Works fine. Though I have to say I could not get MU-installer working (I really prefer old fashioned installing, not this MU-gadgetry!), and seems newest version is 3.3 which is available at http://esupport.sony.com/perl/swu-download.pl?upd_id=5997 - and installed fine.

As per their site (http://ebookstore.sony.com/downpage/index_b.html): "Reader Store is now closed in the US and Canada As announced by Sony, Reader Store in the U.S. and Canada closed on March 20, 2014, and customers were transferred to Toronto-based eReading company, Kobo. The New Reader for Sony Reader (sorry for the involuntary joke!) is now the perfect and lightweight interface for its HW counterpart. Stable, intuitive, you only have to drag the files in the reader, and they are all put tin their proper section (Books, Periodicals, Pictures). The only poor aspect is the reader. Ok. I have Preview and Skim, but for a quick view of the books in the reader while it is connected is really too spartan...

I had the exact same behaviour: just an icon in the Dock, no UI whatsoever. Did somebody manage to successfully run this on Snow Leopard?

I installed this on a MacBook Pro with Snow Leopard. All that occurs is that an icon shows in the Dock. Period. No menus other than under its name to close it. I mean what is this thing supposed to do?

Here's how to rip it off your Mac again: sudo /Library/eBookLibrary/uninstall-eBookLibrary.sh You might want to check out Calibre for the time being. It's clumsy and heavy, but no segfaults there: http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/30657/calibre

Sony releasing a more open device than Amazon and ships its client/support application for OS X? Hope they keep up this way, really.
