GrupaDupa was created by people like you who want their hard disks free of duplicated files without spending ages in front of a computer.

After extensive search and testing of available duplicate detection software we decided to write our own with emphasis on speed and ease of use... and thus GrupaDupa was born.

We dicovered that most of our duplicated files were named the same and stored more than once in different folders. We decided to optimize GrupaDupa to find those files quickly and without having to set up any preferences. This is therefore our default

I'm new to Mac and not a "power" user. I have many duplicate files I've moved from Windows, some dating back to DOS days. I've only used this program a few days and find it very accurate when file name, size and "checksum" are identical, but it seems awkward to use. When I highlight a page and double-click to open, it's not consistent. Some bars open to show the duplicate files and some do not. Some do not stay open. The only efficient way I've found is to have everything on a page open so I can, Command-select the obvious duplicates and Command-delete those selected. It's confusing that both the title bar and the line selected for deletion are blue. And that box that pops up for every single deletion, since I never select all the files under the bar to be deleted, is very annoying. That's why only doing it by page seems worthwhile. I'd pay more for an easier-to-use interface with the ability to search the entire hard drive and other niceties of this program. There may be better ways to use this program that I have not figured out. Also, several times I have unwittingly unleashed an unending cascade of windows that only the OFF button can stop.

Dear Rebecca,

Thanks for your interest in making GrupaDupa better.
A duplicated file contains many possible duplicates. After a search all duplicated files are listed. In preferences you can decide how many of them will appear on each page. Doubleclicking any of them of them toggles (closes/discloses) the possible duplicates and their checksum etc. contained in each duplicated file entry

THIS IS MY QUESTION: Is there any way to open those triangles all at once
yes you can and it's easy.

1) Command a selects all duplicated files on a page.
2) Doubleclick on any record and they will all be expanded.

the difference between Open, Reveal, and Quick Look
Open will attempt to open a file like a letter for example with a word processor, a song with iTunes or other audio program etc. If you chose to open an app instead of a file it warns you it cannot do it.

Reveal opens a Finder window per duplicate (even if you select 1000s) and sets its path to the location of each selected file allowing you to visit files in their directory to facilitate recognition. GrupaDupa is instructing the Finder to create all the windows so no button in GrupaDupa can stop that happening. If you want to stop that you will have to:
1)With the option key down click and hold on the Finder icon in the dock and choose relaunch

Quick shows you all the selected files together in one special window. It uses the Finder to do so and at the apple store should be happy to help you understand that.

annoying box that pops up every time
Select all files you want to delete first. At the apple store they should be happy to teach you how to include or exclude files continuously or discontinously from a list. This is implemented by GrupaDupa.

Everybody makes mistake sometime: we click ok when we mean cancel or access the wrong menu.
The annoying box is there as a buffer to warn that this is possible. it is very easy to dismiss the box. Normally typing the first letter of any of the labels (buttons) on the dialog box dismisses it and performs that command with the exception of Cancel that follows apple guidelines and requires command full stop as the blue button can be pressed by typing the return key.

What is "command full stop?"
Hold down the command key and type . (a full stop)

Most of your problems stem from not understanding the Apple Operating System completely. In particular you need to learn how the Finder and the shortcut commands work. GrupaDupa implements these.

Hope this helps and please come back to me if you have anymore problems.

on 24/6/2012 Rebecca answered our reply above with these kind words:
Dear Mariano,

Thank you for taking the time to answer my questions so quickly. All of your explanations worked perfectly for me and it's wonderful to think that I may actually get this lifetime accumulation of duplicate files trimmed down to a manageable size in a matter of days instead of months. I'm able to move through them much more quickly now.

I go to the Apple Store at least one day a week for training sessions through the One-to-One program, but it seems like the more I learn, the more there is to learn.

Thanks again for helping me better understand how to use your program more effectively!!

I'm curious: Why is a developer posting a comment about his own program? I see Robinart, Wordpower and Axe here with the word (developer) after their user names. What's up with that?

Hi This-person-died-in-2011,
Thank you for your question.
I am Axe, one of the developers of GrupaDupa and you might have noticed I only answer people.
Robinart has nothing to do with WordPower. She is an artist that lives near us, a friend and a user of GrupaDupa. While visiting she was using one of our Macs and thought she could comment on version 3 by logging in with her name. Unfortunately she did not log out as a developer first and therefore she got the (developer) tag. For the life of me I cannot explain why there is a Wordpower (developer) comment except that both Robinart and Wordpower comments are so close together that she might have tried twice by mistake.
On behalf of WordPower I apologize for any misunderstanding this may have caused.

Hi Tsalangi Red,
I forgot to tell you that it is possible to exclude any folder or file from searches. Any folder name you enter in the excluded folders or any file name in the excluded files will not be considered by GrupaDupa. Type *cache* to exclude any file with anything before cache and anything after cache.
The fields are case sensitive Cache and cache are different.
Hope this helps.

Geoprof,
thank you for trying GrupaDupa.
I created GrupaDupa because I was not able to find any app that would find duplicated files as quickly and as effectively as I wanted, whether free or not. GrupaDupa has received many good reviews. GrupaDupa demo allows the user to see how quickly it can find duplicated files and the price to get a fully working app is extremely reasonable.

I don't want to delete duplicates, I want to replace duplicate files with UNIX style had links.

Does anyone know of a program that will find duplicates and replace them with UNIX style hard links?

This program is useless for me. I have to page through hundreds of cache files, and other items. I haven't a clue how you filter a cache file since they have no extension.

Also, if the checksum and file size are different, why does it show up as a duplicate? I don't have the time to open each of the thousands of entries.

You are perfectly right. Your suggestion will make GruoaDupa a lot better.

We have had a meeting about it and decided to implement it.

Hi Esperidon,

Thank you for trying GrupaDupa.

GrupaDupa reports the last modification date and the checksum as well as the name.
When the 3 are the same the file is highly probably the same. A file with the same name and any of the other 2 different is not a duplicated file for sure.

In the preferences you can filter out any of the extensions and file/folder types you do not wish GrupaDupa to look at nor report.

WordPower recommends users to check files with the reveal and or open menu commands before deleting them to avoid errors.

Hope this helps.

We dicovered that most of our duplicated files were named the same and stored more than once in different folders. We decided to optimize GrupaDupa to find those files quickly and without having to set up any preferences. This is therefore our default search.

GrupaDupa will find duplicates in any available volume in a flash. This includes hard disks, both internal and external, and any volume on your local network or on the internet. For example, GrupaDupa scanned the entire contents of one of WordPower's hard drives (126,963,803 files), filtered out all the files that were contained in folders like bundles, themes. packages etc but appeared as files, sorted them and listed 6,658 possible duplicated files. This operation took only 45 seconds to complete.

When GrupaDupa is run, it scans the requested location and presents you with a list of the possible duplicates it has found. From this list you can inspect the details of each of them, including its location, size, modification date, and checksum. You can also work with a duplicate right from our interface by opening it with its associated application, revealing it in the Finder, viewing it using Quick Look, or deleting it. GrupaDupa has been tested to work on Mountain Lion 10.8

A small job well done.
