RedHand overview

RedHand locks your computer: manually via global hot key, menu bar, or Dock; automatically after a period of inactivity (much like a screensaver), depending on the presence of a Bluetooth device, or whenever your computer goes to sleep. Whenever someone tries to gain access to your computer, RedHand takes a photo and informs you about it.

You don't have to think about locking your computer. You don't even have to remember your password. Use your phone as the key! Just tell RedHand to look for a specific Bluetooth device. If you leave the room your computer will be locked. As soon as you are back you'll find it unlocked. Unlocking via password still works-just in case your mobile ran out of juice.

With its ability to execute scripts (AppleScript or anything you could launch via command line), RedHand lets you perform any action you want: send an email or play an audio file when an invalid password was entered; or perform maintenance tasks when the computer was locked. It's up to you. The scripts can access the photo taken.

Installed this RedHand preference pane on my laptop, chose a very simple password I couldn't type wrong. Once started, I triggered the lockout screen with a keyboard shortcut. Entering the previously set password did not unlock anything. Neither did my mobile phone, that I paired in the settings, when brought in the vicinity of the computer. I had to hard-restart the computer to come out of the locking screen. Super nice concept, but my verdict is: highly unreliable.

Please help...Redhand was installed on my MBP by a friend who gave me the passoword, yet not instructions on how to login and turn it off. I have tried the password on the lockscreen and nothing. I need to access my computer and he is MIA...

On occasion I have been able to bypass the lockout simply with cmd + q. So in short the software is not doing what it is supposed to do. Hence only one star.

Hi, just to say to the developper, if by luck he read it : Version 1.9.1 on MacBook Pro with graphic switch force to use dedicated graphic card while version 1.9.0 did not. Why ? It's strange and sad when used on battery. Mac OS X 10.7.4 on 15" MBP late 2011 (ATI 6750 & Intel HD3000)

It would be great if it could be integrated with either the OS password or in case of business laptops with the LDAP password. But not necessary, just nice to have.

Got this free with the MacUpdate bundle. I have had two issues with this and both were responded to within 24 hours (the first on a holiday weekend). It took some fiddling with the options to get it to work the way I wanted but it works so well for me that I don't even bother to close my '09 MacBook when I leave the room. One of my issues was a personal preference concerning the graphic that comes up when you type in your password wrong. Since my laptop is used at times in a church setting, I suggested an alternative and the developer used my suggestion (the peace symbol…which, I understand will be an option in the forthcoming v1.9). Since I make mistakes when typing when I can't see what I'm typing. I had little trouble setting up my bluetooth until I realized that I had to leave it in 'discoverable' mode all the time--which I found by pure accident. This program is a pure gem for me, thank you Roddy! Looking forward to v1.9 coming out.

Just got this app specifically for the Bluetooth locking and, unfortunately, it doesn't work at all... When I check the box to select a Bluetooth device, it keeps scanning and never gives me a list of devices to select from, even though it's displaying the one I want to use as the first item (greyed out and scanning constantly). Since I can never select the device and can't hit OK for the device it *has* found nor cancel scanning for other devices, it's useless. Also, it seems like there *has* to be a delay before it locks of at least 30 seconds. This isn't horrible, but I'd rather have the option to lock immediately upon Bluetooth disconnect. Until I can actually connect, though, I can't check how much that would annoy me. Seems like a cool app, but it needs quite a bit more polish...

Great Software! The best of the best!! Will pay for it with the great pleasure! There is only one thing I would recommend to add. It should show the language you use when you enter the password. Got confused last night when I switched the language and locked the screen... And one more thing. Have no idea why but it freezes the OS when I open the browser full screen. Using Mac OS Lion.

Would be nice instead of calling up a lock screen, to have it lock the screen but energize the screen saver. I would much rather see that, than a static lock or blanked screen.

I do not recommend using this software until I hear back from the developer. Even though I removed the preference panel and restarted my computer, there is a faint image of the lock icon that stays on my iMac LCD, even over Finder windows. I hope it is not a burned-in image. Will report if I hear of a solution.

Really good application, but went I setup to lock it with my iphone via bluetooth it keeps locking the mac intermitently even with the iphone next to the mac. Maybe the iphone locks and goes standbye, and thats a problem.

This is really a nifty utility that can be accessed either by menu selection or via a hot key to hide your screen from curious eyes. Black and white colors fade in and out in a very smooth and elegant way. The price is right and its author has full trust in his customers i.e. no serial number or software key is needed. Nice little utility. Takes pictures on lock and unlock of the screen, and allows you to set a time for it to refuse further input after failed password attempts. It can be activated by a global keyboard short cut, allowing for very quick locking. One thing worth noting is that it doesn't use the OS X screen lock (what you'd get if you set your computer to require a password to wake from screen saver), so it requires its own password to be set. Anyway, I prefer it to locking my screen the old fashioned way, and I didn't much mind paying the $2.40 (Canadian) for it.
