Google Quick Search Box

2.0.0.3789
02 August 2010

Open source Google search box.

Overview

Google Quick Search Box is an open source search box that allows you to search data on your computer and across the web.

This app is very experimental, but through it you will be able to see many of the areas we are exploring: contextual search, actions, and extensibility. It is by no means feature-complete, but is a very good indication of things to come.

What's new in Google Quick Search Box

Version 2.0.0.3789:

Thank you for working with QSB and giving us so much encouragement and feedback. We really appreciate it.

Here is the long awaited next beta. Hopefully you find it has been worth the wait. A handful of the many, many issues we have fixed are listed below, but some of the big highlights are:

  • Fully 64 bit.
  • Support for Move To.. and Open With.. and other more complex actions.
  • Support for searching Google Calendars.
  • Faster Spotlight searches.

Brilliant! Far less complex than QuickSilver but does a great deal. Would be nice to have triggers that would search only a certain context but I will use this frequently. Plug-in support will make this HUGE. Probably not my favorite way to search the web but I prefer this to Spotlight for finding apps and documents on my hard drive. Everyone should give it a try.

I would really like to see this app get development on the fast-track. I love the concept. It's full spotlight search with the ability to manipulate files and perform other actions. It's like LaunchBar and Spotlight combined. So far, every version I've tried has simply been too buggy for regular use. I'll give this one another shot and hope for the best.

They are betas. Betas are going to be buggy. Many devs are trying to improve and make old plugins compatible. Go to version 2.0 and your run into less problems. Remember, QSB is not QS although both are open source. Join the dev group and get updates and help test so new versions aren't as buggy. I am learning to code just to help this project and the QS project as I hope it does not die but I think it will for general audiences. At least google's money is behind QSB.

Google has done a good job with this app so far. I'm glad they finally updated it. It's feels faster and more responsive. I can't go back to Spotlight after using this. The only thing I would like to see is this app automatically start up at each new boot up without the QSB screen.

Excellent quick app launcher with a memory. Faster than Launchbar, and unlike Spotlight, I can make a typo and it still works.

An excellent product, but fatally flawed in one simple way - how asinine is it that when launched on login it opens the search box? When I boot my computer, I don't want to see the search box unbidden.

No, the "Open search box at login" checkbox simple add/remove Google Quick Search Box from your login items list. It won't help to prevent search box from pop-up when application launched.

Try checking the box left of QSB's entry in your startup items list. This should hide it at startup, and should work for every startup item in the list.

Very nice. It's not nearly as versatile and QuickSilver and Launchbar for local operations, but it excels with its web page and search suggestions. It also has some other nice little touches, like displaying dictionary definitions in the search box or in large type. For me, QSB won't replace LaunchBar (especially since I already paid for the version 5 upgrade), but I will use it for certain functions it performs better.

Looks very promising. Until now I used LB and was about to pay the upgrade fee. Now I hesitate as I think QSB has quite some potential. Lets see how the plugins roll in ... Could very well be the next QS. In contrary to the reviewer before I don´t think that the interface is ugly ... it´s reduced to what you need ... nothing more and nothing less ....
