Version 2.5.5

Use tags to organize and retrieve files.

Tags overview

Tags allows you to manage all your files so that you can easily find the files that you need, when you need them.
  • Tag everything on your Mac: documents, emails, images, and all other files. Quickly find files irrespective of where you saved them. You can bring up Tag's UI with a simple keystroke in most applications, so that you can Tag files and search for Tags, wherever you are.
  • Tags are like keywords for files. Using tags allows you to group files which have something in common. You can apply many different Tags to a single file as well as apply the same Tag to multiple files. This allows you to associate files to one another in a way far superior to a rigid file / folder structure.
Features:
  • Tag files directly in all supported applications
  • Full Spotlight integration
  • Supports in-application search
  • Create smart folders and mailboxes
  • AppleScript support
Supported Applications: Tags works natively with basically all applications that properly support AppleScript.
  • Finder
  • Mail
  • Address Book
  • iPhoto
  • Safari
  • Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, etc.)
  • Adobe Photoshop
  • Xcode
  • Rapidweaver
  • OmniOutliner
  • Pages
  • Keynote
  • Quicktime
Of course, even if the app is not supported, you can still tag the resulting file in the Finder!

Of all the tag management apps, this was always my favorite. As of now, with the introduction of tags in Mavericks (and continued support in Yosemite), the app is effectively useless... Ideally the app could be saved, it just needs to be updated to support the tag values now 'built into Mac OS X'. I tried manually doing this with a Hex editor, but it broke the App... If the developer would make this change I would happily use it today. Without this change the app is rendered useless.

For the time being, this was an excellent app for its ubiquity and simplicity. But as said by others (and still valid of september 2014): No updates, no support for generic OS X tags (in Mavericks (let alone Yosemite)). Not useful anymore. Sorry to say: This is abandonware. Do not buy. (I switched my tagging to HoudahSpot and Launchbar)

Tags is abandonware and has not been seriously developed for years (apart from making it work with new OS X releases). Despite repeated questions by users to Case Apps on several media there has been no word whatsoever since Mavericks was released as to when an update can be expected. This is a pity since the app used to work fine. Seems like this is going the way Punakea went.

This is OBSOLETE software if you use Mavericks. It writes tags in an old format, and there appears to be no effort to update the application. It creates OpenMeta tags, an old non-official format that many applications used. But everything is moving to the new Mavericks format, so if you buy this your tags will likely not be very usuable in the new system or new applications.

This app is not updated enough for my liking. Yes it's simple and does the job, but a developer that cares about their app and customers would improve and innovate. Plus, the only response to Mavericks so far is on twitter, with no mention on the website, leaving people like me wondering if the developer really cares anymore. I am confused on how this will work with Mavericks as well because doesn't Mavericks have a limit on the amount of tags? The interface doesn't seem like it lends itself to large amounts of tags like Tags does. I use a ton of different tags, and I still think openMeta is going to be useful alongside Mavericks, but I could be wrong.

Until Maverick comes out, this really is the best tagging utility currently available. However, to echo what a prior reviewer below me stated, the app is way overpriced for functionality. I mean, it hasn't been updated since 2011 and the developers want to charge almost as much as it might cost to upgrade Maverick? No thank you. On another note, it's sad that a function so useful for file organization such as tagging has undergone so little development. You would be amazed with how easy you are able to find files when you combine Hazel automation with tagging.

Very nice and effective app. Overpriced. I'm sure if they cut the price down by 3 ($9.99), they would sell at least 3-5 times more. Especially if they enter in the MAS. Also, they need to assure people that they are still active in the development and updates of their app. Finally, the trial period is too short to evaluate an application such as Tags. Because it's an approach to OpenMeta that we need to get acustomed to in order to really feel we need it. Thanks.

Does anyone know why the developer doesn't respond to their email that they issue...as I've moved to a new computer; I keep trying to "unlock" the software with my serial number. And I keep getting a message to contact the support team? Frustrating.

Among all the tagging applications that have I tried (i.e., Leap, iDocument, HoudahSpot, Punakea, and Tags), I prefer Tags the most. Unfortunately, after three emails requesting support over the last month, I have yet to receive a single (even boilerplate) response from Caseapps. Since this application hasn't been updated since August, I'm left to wonder whether this application is still being supported at all. The lack of response I've received has also been the only reason I've held off on purchasing Tags. With me, Tags has encountered problems when I have asked it to delete and rename tags (e.g. the file shows that the tag has been removed from it yet the file still appears under that tag category, etc.) and Tag Window has a scrolling bug that forces me to repeatedly resize the Tag Window as opposed to much more simply use the scrolling feature on my trackpad to go the the appropriate tag(s). There is also much room for new features, especially a Smart Folder in which I can define which tags are included (including non-overlapping tags) to accommodate special research projects. On the note of non-response from developers, I am a license holder of Punakea, and they have never responded to any support emails, either, over a much longer period of time. So, while Punakea is by far the most similar to Tags in terms of feature set and UI, its developers are no more responsive to customer issues. Finally, Path Finder 6, which has been talked about for two years now but has not appeared, is supposed to feature tagging. I am hoping this is released soon and that the tagging function is well-integrated into the finder.

Best (Open Source Tagging for Mac OS X) implementation ever! I use also Leap, by far the best standalone OpenMeta solution, but Tags is perfectly integrated in Mac OS X. Even tagging in Mail is a charm. And, after some Mails with the Developer and testing some special Debug-Versions, Tags works also in Lion (10.7.2). Best and also fastest support I ever get. PS. And NO. I do not get my paycheck from this guys ;-)

This program has a lot of features but and good potential to be a great program if you are trying to eliminate the file folder paradigm to a more modern computer oriented file system but one you can find documents in easier. Just started trying to use it for the first time in Lion, so I am not sure what may be compatibility issues, but some things do not work properly. For example, I want the to ask to Tag files saving to my documents folder (folders, gone) to make sure everything is tagged. Otherwise, you might have problems finding you files fast or being able to use smart folders and/or Hazel to organize them in some fashion. Also, this may not be a Tags program issue, but their supplied Automator workflows (example "Ask for Tags") do not work and they are crucial in using Tags the way I need it to work in order to automate using Tags. Running these workflows in Automator shows several errors that may be related. The dialog window does come up and you can enter tags, but they are not written to the file. The latest release is said to me for Lion compatibility, but I still have the same problems. So far, the developer is not responding. If anyone can shed light on the Automator issues, thanks in advance for your help. Without this, Tags I only marginally useful.

Great software but I can't help but think that with a different price point (say $15) they'd sell a whole lot more licenses.

This is a great application but there are many files that I can't tag, usually from within the files application. The developers rarely update this application and I find that disappointing. It has such great potential. I do still recommend the Tags, I just hope the developers don't give up on it.

Tags has a very clean interface that allows one to assign and browse OpenMeta tags. You can assign tags to one or multiple files from the Finder (or PathFinder) with just a key-press and a mouse-click. There is a tag browser that allows you to find all files with one tag, a union of tags (this tag or this tag or this tag), or an intersection of tags (this tag and this tag and this tag). You can also search by content within a set of tagged documents. Tags includes a Spotlight replacement that has a better user interface which also allows you to search by tag. I like it better than Spotlight, but I don't use it that much. The program is also scriptable, but I haven't used that yet. The one thing it doesn't allow is to search for tags within folder hierarchies (all files with tag X in my "Personal" folder). I have found one small display bug, and the authors say that they will fix it in the next release. In all, a wonderfully simple implementation of OpenMeta tags.

With the advent of OS X Tiger features a new Spotlight, search on the Mac has never been a quick and convenient. Spotlight simplify searching for files by tag (or tags), without requiring the user knowledge of the exact names of files or their contents. However, to assign a label to the document to quickly find not so simple. Keywords can include the name of the document or open the file properties and to prescribe tags in the field "Comments Spotlight". Tags - one of the most visually attractive applications. Tags fully compatible with Spotlight, and uses the platform "OpenMeta" to integrate tags with other applications. Adding tags to files produced by hot key. This is the perfect solution for tagginga files. Tags - The tool allows you to tag from the Finder files and folders, as well as letters, photos or bookmarks in Safari. The new version of the utility upgraded search engine and integrated search for labels. Update your browser adds tags, support for Mailplane, Firefox, and some applications, Adobe. By combining tags, users can simplify access to files, in particular by pressing hotkeys for applications. Tag Browser allows you to edit existing tags and view the recent files. Thanks to developers for a very useful product! Best Regards Vitaly!
