I don't know what everyone here is talking about. Look, I'm a minimalist and I like having as few as apps as possible on my Mac (but will not take anything less than the best so if I need extra apps than so be it). I love what Mac is by itself HOWEVER... Just the utilities the app has alone pays for itself. The Uninstaller is tool is much better than iTrash($8) and barley leaves any extra trail whereas with iTrash it leaves behind almost half the app. The Updater is superior to MacUpdater($10). It picked up on apps that MacUpdater never did. These two apps alone pay for HALF of what you're gettin with CleanMyMac Then you're getting Malware Removal, Privacy Clean up, System scan, Optimization, all with the best user interface I have ever seen I'll let you decide if that's worth $20

If you need an uninstaller and you don't want to pay for it... and you want a good one, get a copy of AppCleaner directly from the developer. The new MacUpdater is extraordinary, it will detect any app you have be it 32BIt, discontinued, on the App Store or not. Highly configureable and dirt easy to use. You buy it you own it. As far as Malware protection goes, CleanMyMac has it, kind of. There is no indication that its database is regularly updated like any responsible AV/Malware app. If you are concerned about Malware try MalwareBytes if you do not want massive protection it will run for free. Just what does CleanMyMac do for you that is so unique to justify its cost? The developer has castigated Onyx on its site for being deficient. They do not mention all of the free utilities built into Onyx... download it and look. It has many capabilities that are truly valuable that the very expensive and deficient CleanMyMac does not have. CleanMyMac still has one major problem that I have directly challenged the developer about since Catalina came out. This app cannot and will not maintain Full Disk access for any period of time no matter what you do! Follow all of their instructions, install, reinstall, authorize, reauthorize, it will not maintain full disk access. This profoundly affects the performance of the app. The developers talk a good game but when challenged they will demand the same data from you time and again and do nothing with it. You want a deficient piece of junk for your Mac at a ridiculous price feel free... but not me. This app does not deserve to be on the market with so many better and less expensive alternatives with truly responsive support and developers.

The problem for you "brinksbridge7" is that you don't know what you're talking about. Five stars for a product for which you recommend disabling a feature because it makes a Mac's performance WORSE? (I'm referring to your comment below, where you say, "You can disable the health monitor.") And you haven't even bothered to actually check the developer's store. There is no $20 option. It's either $39.95 a year SUBSCRIPTION or $89 for a "one-time purchase." (And it isn't clear if the "one-time purchase" means free upgrades forever, or only for this version.) I can't imagine anyone who writes "barley [sic] leaves any extra trail [sic] whereas with iTrash it leaves behind almost half the app [sic]" is capable of a rigorous and impartial comparison of software products. "Extra trail?" "Half the app?" And no one needs to, and no one should, run any kind of real-time, background "health monitor" anyway. Not from TechTool, not from Drive Genius, not from CleanMyMac. They are superfluous at best. And (for the umpteenth time, people) your Mac doesn't need a "cleaner." (Please see my comments below from 11/19/19) If you don't know what you're doing (and if you're considering buying CleanMyMac, you DON'T) then don't go HACKING AROUND macOS with software that makes that all too easy to do. -SB

The problem for you "ShotBlocker", is that you don't know a good piece of software from a bad one. Once you realize that all you need is a single beautiful, functional app that delights you every time that you use it... is when you will realize that you are wrong

Still a mess. Cannot maintain Full Disk Access. When it loses access the only fix is to uninstall and reinstall. Verification and Repair function fails most of the time. When Security Prefs are checked it will be noticed that when Full Disk access is authorized the External Disk access function is not listed. Turn off Full Disk access all of a sudden External Disk access becomes available. Support is pleasant and offers help but nothing meaningful gets accomplished. Catalina has been out foresting etc for quite a while. It is perplexing that MacPaw still has no answers.

This program takes over your computer. It slows it down. The "health monitor" pops up constantly with false positives related to everything from free memory available the need for more junk file removal. Ironically, the best way to free up more memory is to remove this bloatware. You also can't Force Quit this health monitor, and if you remove the startup entry,, it'll just reinstall itself when you reboot. Stay away from this app. It cause more harm than any good it does!

My opinion was that Adobe support was the most "customer joker" in the world, but Macpaw is even worse and the refund is only theory... It seems completely useless (someone can tell why ever the RAM memory should be cleaned?) but also very tedious. I extensively use OneDrive and iDrive with about 1 million off line files. From time to time, CMM X decides to download them and completely fills up my Mac, with enormous loss of time. You simply cannot stop it. Uninstall and forget it for ever.

For years I have used CleanMyMac. I have found that CleanMyMacX has some flaws. I ran the auto scan and chose to fix the issues. When i reran the scan, I got the same results of what needed to be fixed. It's updater area is slow and does not show as much available updates as MacUpdate. including the updates to its' own program. So sad.

I've been using CleanMyMac (versions 1, 2, and then 3) for years, and I've been happy with it. But after upgrading to Catalina, I was forced to install CleanMyMac X—and I'm frankly shocked at how much of a step *BACKWARD* it is. The organization of the app is now confusing. We used to be able to run all of the major scans with one click, then review each one individually and decide which items to remove. Now you have to run the various scans one by one, instead of running them all with one click. How is this an upgrade? Furthermore, after scanning for mail attachments, we used to be able to filter the results by filetype. I email a LOT of music files, so it was useful to be able to view only archives or other types of documents, excluding the many music files I've emailed. But they've taken that away. Now you just get one, long list of attachments. How is this an upgrade? Furthermore, the app is generally sluggish and slow to respond. For example, after scanning for mail attachments, there are now disclosure triangles (which aren't immediately obvious) for showing the files found. But after clicking on them, it takes several seconds for the files to be revealed. Similarly, after running a scan, if you want to return to the main page, you click "Scan again." But after doing so, the app became unresponsive for a good 20 seconds. Previous versions of CMM *never* behaved in this way. And on top of everything, once you update to Cataline, you're *forced* to "upgrade" from CMM3 to CMMX. CMMX is *NOT* an upgrade. It's a *DOWNGRADE*. And I refuse to be forced to spend money for something that doesn't work as well and is harder to use than its predecessors. I'm profoundly disappointed.

DEAR READER: please navigate to https://www.thesafemac.com/the-myth-of-the-dirty-mac/ to learn why you not only DO NOT NEED and SHOULD NOT USE CleanMyMac, but why you you DON'T NEED ANY of the dozens of 'cleaner" software packages out there. If you need to delete software that didn't come from the Mac App Store, use the uninstaller if there is one. Otherwise a combination of iTrash and FindAnyFile do an excellent job. If you feel the need to clean caches, get TinkerTool System and READ THE MANUAL before you go HACKING AROUND macOS. AND BY THE WAY, to dear "iMacWare," who left a review here claiming to have tested this app against the "top alternatives" -- I call BS on you until you do a writeup of the results and post them for all to see. You're a MacPaw shill, if not an actual MacPaw employee. (And where do you come off using DISK DRILL'S logo as your meme?) MacPaw used to be a decent company -- no more. Gemini is now a deceptively priced ANNUAL SUBSCRIPTION. CleanMyMac is just another overpriced entry in the Mac "cleaner" market space -- though granted it has a SLICKER INTERFACE -- the better to reel in the SUCKERS out there who think their Macs will "RUN FASTER" if they have a good 'CLEANING.' Buyer beware, they're all garbageware. -SB

I used CleanMyMac 3 for a couple of years and then their X came out. I didn't immediately upgrade because I wasn't really convinced I needed the extra protection. Long story short, I got a browser malware virus, I kept deleting it and it kept coming back. So I invested in the CleanMyMac X because it claimed to detect more malware. Well, the software kept crashing 3-4 times whenever I did a browser extension scan. I sent the auto generated error report to them each time with my contact email. Never heard back from them. Finally called Apple and they helped me clear the virus and install a competitor's malware detection software. Afterward visited the MacPaw website and put in a support ticket for a refund (since it didn't detect or clear the malware and that was the ***only*** reason I upgraded). After 3 requests, I am giving up. They don't respond to my emails in a way that makes sense -- it's like they are responding to some other email -- it is in a nonsensical way that leads me to believe they simply don't want to give me a refund. So I give them 1 star for a product that doesn't measure up to their marketing and horrible customer service.

Used CleanMyMac for many years, now they come out with X and force you to upgrade, I bought version 1 and then 3, I skipped 2 as i did not feel it would be necessary to upgrade after just a year. I bought these versions outright and I thought I have it for as long as I want to use it. Well, now X is here and the old versions are not supported after a year and they force you to upgrade. Yes, downloading the new version is FREE, what a beautiful thing, till you realize you cant use the functions unless you buy the Full version, just to realize you'll have to buy the next version next year. Then you might as well call it a subscription. At least then ppl know they have to keep paying if they want to keep using it. Just SAD!

A while back I gave a 5 star review. I have now totally reversed my opinion. 1) Constantly asks for full disk access when it has already been granted. 2) Completely unable to verify and repair disks. 3) Despite tons of data given to MacPaw to demonstrate problems responses are way off target! Suppose developers will offer fixes that are not fixes...ie deauthorize the app and reauthorize it to solve the problems...what a solution...works for about 5 minutes then the problems reoccur! DO NOT BUY THIS APP!!!

I'm giving CleanMyMac X a try today on my 27" inch iMac. I had a clean upgrade to Catalina, and while everything seems to be working fine, I've had a few apps with minor issues, which seem to point to the app itself. Anyway, with that said, Onyx hasn't been updated for Catalina yet, so I wanted to run a cleaner to give my mac that clean sense without just doing a full up clean install. So far, i haven't seen anything suspicious, and everything seems to run clean and fast. I was hesitant to install this, but I think people confuse it with MacKeeper, which is known to be a problem. Typically I don't use cleaning utilities, however, at least in recent years MacPaw seems to have a good reputation, and whenever i Google for mac maintenance help, they usually are at the top of the list, providing the Clean My Mac solution, and the manual solution. With this said i figured I would give their software a try and see how it is.

The worst customer care in the history of computer programs. I have used CleanMyMac for many years and other than the slow speed, I have been pleased with the program. I decided to "upgrade" to X a few days ago. Constantly throughout the day, I received a pop up menu from the program announcing that "Something has gone wrong." I describe the issue and forward it to the non-caring folks at MacPaw with no reply and no help. I have written to them asking for the promised refund within 60 days and big surprise - NO REPLY. As an aside, their Malware module is useless and fails to find many issues with Malware. Find a program supported by a company that gives a crap - unlike these derelicts!

I'll be honest, I have used CleanMyMac since came back to Mac OS X in 2009. I was using CleanMyMac for good ol' Mac OS Snow Leopard. I'll admit, it had its up's and its downs, and the company had a bunch of learning to be done from that point until now... MacPaw makes a mean and lean Mac tuning kit. It's the premier uninstaller and hidden files finder... I have tested the top alternatives and they miss what CleanMyMac automatically finds with its "Health Checker", which allows you to get rid of rubbish that other apps leave behind. Mac Paw is an amazing company, and I use CleanMyMac and Gemini to maintain my families Mac computers... I wouldn't dream of putting other dangerous and possibly maliciously built "Tweakers" on my computer. Mac Paw has your back. Download the software directly from Mac Paw's website or you risk getting a tampered installer.

I don't understand all the negative, comments. When ONYX came out they warned... "if you don't want to destroy your mac, "READ DIRECTIONS CAREFULLY". Clean my mac can be used as a memory cache and functionality cleaner. Just un-box and every week or so just scan and clean. Then watch your Mac run faster. Which it will! It can also be used as a maintenance tool for those who, "read the instruction", for those who don't and try things that they don't understand it will make bad things happen, just as ONYX did. Some of the horror stories from ONYX reviewers were really bad and some completely destroyed their macs. I have been using clean my mac since the beginning. I had two mac book pros in the past and now have two mac minis. I have clean my mac 3 on one and clean my mac x on another. My thought's (I don't give advice) just use it to clean your mac when it runs slow (you can free up space while in the middle of a project, AWESOME FEATURE). Disable the large file feature, unless you know exactly how it works, Don't do maintenance. DONT DO ANYTHING but keep your mac clean, you won't have any problems. PLEASE PLEASE Check out the Privacy Feature... the number of Cookies accumulated... WOW! ...Web Developer for over 15 years, used Clean My Mac since it came out.

Not quite useful, and real funny customer service.
I found that this app will try to connect to shared drives at startup, even if you're not in the same network. Instead it keeps popping up cannot connect to xxxx server warning.
I reported this issue, the reply is I should disable firewall or any security app like little snitch....in case such apps prevent this app connect to their server.....
Excuse me?
After I pointed out that this had nothing to with their server. They just went to silence, and stop replying my emails.
Real funny.
I won't spend another penny on this company.

Besides that, this app is pretty useless. The uninstaller feature, will leave a lot of trash files...nothing better than the free AppCleaner.
The startup cleaner feature, will make lots of trouble, if you happened delete some startup item you shouldn't delete.
Trash scan is trash too... the results usually are cache file(which will speed up apps process, and it will mark screensaver's video file as trash...), language files, logs, nothing more....
A pretty much a useless app beside the beautiful UI...
and "responsive" customer service.

Just dare mention this app on the Apple Support Communities website -- as I mistakenly did -- and the old timers there will do everything short of stringing you up. As far as they are concerned, CMM is scamware. Some of them will put you down as if their's is the only opinion that matters. It is serious group think there. It seems that the only acceptable apps similar in nature which are promoted at ASC are EtreCheck and Malwarebytes. I found Malwarebytes to be too intrusive for my taste, so I don't use it, and I rarely use EtreCheck, being as I don't have any serious issues on my machine. I had CMM installed for a short time to check it out, but after they berated me, and warned me about the dangers of using it, I removed it from my hard drive as well.

CleanMyMac 4.2.1…Just bought it, 1 year subscription. That is not good as far as I'm concerned, but I can live with it if there is significant, and continued versatility, and improved performance. Unfortunately, this app continues to fall flat on its face in 1 key area. Despite what support told me 30 minutes ago, before I made my purchase…CleanMyMac 4.21…just released CANNOT VERIFY THE SSD in my 2017 5K iMac. As I have said before Onyx a free app is fully capable of this. Why not use Onyx and quit complaining? It seems to me that any app that touts itself as fully able to maintain your app must be able to complete them most basic function to verify the SSD Boot Drive that many of us have! I am studying the rest of its functions now. But I do not like asking a question about an app prior to purchase and being provided with inaccurate information.

I am running both CleanMyMac3 and CleanMyMacX on my system at the same time for comparison. CleanMyMac3 will run until it is no longer compatible with the system. CleanMyMacX will run for another 305 days. There are features added to CleanMyMacX which make it interesting but there are also features removed that make CleanMyMac3 more attractive to keep. The ability to manage some of the macOS extensions, perhaps the most valuable part of CMM. In CMM3 you can manage extensions all from one place (nice) and you can manage "Services" (that huge in my book). CMMX removes the ability to manage services (what?!). CMMX also removes the ability to manage Quick Look Plugins, Siri and Widgets. CMMX removed the dashboard in CMM3. Some of the information is still available in the CMMX menu bar item like before. Frankly when I launch CMM any version I want that dashboard and the "Scan" button. I don't need a big pink iMac providing no value short of marketing a product to me that I already own.. (CMM3) or rent (CMMX). CMMX added internet connection speed. It's wrong and does not include upload speed which FaceTime users will need to know about. The price skyrocketed for the product. CMM3 was $40 purchased. CMMX is $40 to rent per year and to buy is now $90. Outrageously expensive for this kind of utility, especially since it can be 90% replace with a series of free or very low cost shareware items.. I **purchased** 6 seats of CleanMyMac 3 at discount, well under $40 * 6 ($240). CMMX is a per machine license even if you have two machines you use and cannot use simultaneously. (aka one at work, one at home). To **purchase** CMMX for 6 seats, $540? Really? Pass... So in 305 days (end of my rental period), CleanMyMacX very likely will be uninstalled by CleanMyMac 3 ;-)

I'm aware that there are many complaints about this app, most of which claim that it has somehow messed up somebody's computer or files. While I respect their experience and impressions, I've been using it on 2 Macs pretty much since it first came out, and I've never experienced any problem with or because of it. In addition, it gets better and better with each update. For me it's been safe, and has opened up a ton of space on my drives over time.

New release 4.1 still cannot verify an SSD formatted in Mojave. I could care less about the ability to clean out Steam Game leftovers if the app is unable to perform this most basic and essential function. Also, it is not as good at deleting apps and its leftovers as you might think. When you use Adobe's Un-Installer to remove Acrobat DC for instance, the Adobe app leaves a ton of executable files. When you use The new CleanMyMac it will leave a huge number of files behind. They may not be active but they do take space and you want them gone! Use any file search app and enter Adobe and you will be shocked to see all of the files etc. left behind. 40$ for this app? Not likely!

Have to agree. The uninstaller is the part that really disappoints me. macOS installs are commonly just as messy as Windows with it's DLL-Hell these days. Shame on Apple. But regardless, when something advertises that it is an uninstaller cleanerupper, it had better do the job. CMMX does not.

For example, extFS adds the ability for macOS Finder to directly read and write to ext1, ext2, ext3, ext4 UNIX volumes like you get with Linux and Raspberry PI. Great software. In debugging rampant Finder problems (#FTFF for god sakes), I needed to uninstall extFS to test. (btw, extFS was **not** the issue in any way). Running the CMMX uninstaller on extFS would uninstall just the application, none of the other executable or settings file sprawl. See https://cerniuk.org/wiki/files/64Y0o3H for what CMMX sees vs what exists.

So long story short, CMMX is now massively over priced at $90 for a utility which previously cost too much at $40 that should have been $9 in the first place to make it an impulse buy and kill the market.

CMMX is not even in the App Store; aka cannot pass the Apple qualifiers for "good seal of approval". In other words, we don't know what the heck this software is really doing as it is not validated by Apple... and if Apple had excised the 30% "store tax" on the software, paying $12 in the Apple Store would be reasonable for $9 software.

Liked CMM3 when I could find it on sale. Have 6 seats of it but it. was still overpriced. When my CMMX rental period expires in 305 days, my CMM3 will be used to uninstall it.. but I will still have to manually dig for the pieces as you cannot trust CMMX or CMM3 to do a full clean up on uninstall.

If you have an SSD and it is APFS formatted CleanMyMac 4.0.4 still cannot verify the drive! This is unreal. Even Onyx a free app is fully capable to do it. If you own a Mac with an SSD running Mojave and your drive is formatted APFS what do you gain by buying this app when you will have to use something else to verify it, when you can get a free app that is far more capable? I used to love this app, but it is not vet useful to me if this very basic function is unavailable.

Yesterday I downloaded and ran version 4.04 once, obtained from the in-app updates from version 4.03 also downloaded yesterday. It trashed a Time Machine drive by making it Read Only and despite everything I tried I couldn't change it back. Eventually had to erase and start it rebuilding my back-up. Even trying to erase the drive was problematic, I couldn't just erase the partition but had to reformat the whole drive. DiskTools and Onyx both report the drive to be in good order with no defects. Luckily I have two time machine drives which back-up successively. No response from the CleanMyMac team to my email.

I neither understend the „hate” reviews. Especially when they lack the objectivity and are based on an imature almighty-I argument. After all the app is quite useful as it gathers under one umbrella a lot of utilities that otherwise you have to handle running from one side to another of you machine. It is not hard on resources so it doesn`t cost you to have it running in background doing its job. It is not a scamware as some imply, the only dodgy thing that does is sending some data to some google related places... in other words after having your money on selling, it is also milking you for profit afterwords. A pettiness... a lack of ethics if not a greedy strategy. But now with the new version and the new prices the greed reaches a riculous level. 40 euros for one year subscription, 90 for life (with 50% off for upgrade) it is a... I don`t know how to put it... a buggery? Well... my love ends here, it is way too much.

This may be one of the big reasons that it is not in the Apple Mac App Store. Thanks for your post. Will definitely set CMM as blocked from accessing the network now. HandsOff and to a lesser degree Radio Silence are crucial to running macOS software these days. :-(

When I just launched CMMX, it made 50 connections to servers on the internet with no indication of what it was doing:

Not losing any sleep at all, I probably actually sleep way too much most days. Still, it's NOT a review of the app, no matter how many times you call it that. You haven't mentioned one single feature of the app. You're just whining about the pricing and giving it half a star just because of that. That is neither a review nor fair by any means. And doing that twice within a few weeks is just a dick move.

But I am truly sorry that you feel persecuted, hope you can get over it some day. I'll stop now because you're clearly unable to comprehend what a software review is and how to write one.

Yes, I agree, it's a great app, does what it's supposed to do and does it simply and easily. Somewhat overdesigned , simple UI, did have some problems where it identified malware but couldn't resolve it. I can hesitantly recommend it if you're willing to pay a yearly fee of $40. This app used to cost $40 and it was yours. You owned it and updates were free. But no more. I've owned Mac for more than 20 years. I also own many utilities that work very well. Some of the best are free. But consider if this app was used for 20 years. Is it an $800 app? When Onyx does the same thing without the My Little Pony colour scheme for free. So, yes, it's a good app but I can't rate it without considering pricing structure.

I've been using this app since 2013. Extremely useful utility. They've moved to a new pricing model with $90 purchase price, or $45 upgrade, or $30/yr subscription, or it's included in the 100-ish app SetApp subscription plan. Last upgrade was 3 years ago and $20. I found the app so useful that when this new version came out I simply paid the $45 for the upgrade without much concern. So far the app has an updated look and works a little faster than the previous version. No problems. There *are* free apps which do some of what this one does, like Onyx, but not as comprehensively, and not as fully, and without a menubar app that shows RAM usage (and lets you free up RAM) and shows trash size (and lets you delete with a click). This app also sits in background and can fully delete associated app files when you throw an app in the trash (which would otherwise stay in the system), and can also check for malware. Onyx by itself doesn't do that. So yes, it's expensive, and it's also an expensive upgrade. But it works extremely well and I've found I got what I paid for.

Built into the OS is a reasonably useful tool for finding old files, large files, etc. Go to About My Mac --> Storage. Click the Manage... button. There's a handful of useful tools there for optimizing stuff on your file system. I've never used CMM, so can't really compare what it does to what Apple gives you for free. I don't plan to subscribe to CMM either. To me, it's a waste of money. To others, perhaps not.

DISCLAIMER: I'm venting a rant ahead, be warned. FWIW I'm not exaggerating a bit -- I can provide the full email thread I exchanged with MacPaw's support, which was extremely frustrating as they replied in the usual Microsoft fashion: blah blah blah, fuck you, blah blah.

//

I bitterly regret buying the two licenses for CMM and the two ones for Gemini2, these guys have no respect for users' privacy -- allow me to explain:

Back in the day when I bought CMM, it had an option under Preferences- > Privacy so you could opt-in, if you wished, to share 'sanitized' information about the way you use the app to help them bring more unicorns to the world, convert poo in rainbows and blah blah blah.

Guess what: at some later version - which? I can't tell, because they did this surreptitiously without PROPERLY INFORMING THEIR USERS - they REMOVED the opt-in option and made it COMPULSORY; now when you go to Preferences -> Privacy you're SLAPPED IN YOUR FACE with a message that reads: "All data collected by CleanMyMac 3 can be reviewed in the updated Privacy Policy. Take a moment to learn how we collect and store your information."

Well, MacPaw: FUCK YOU.

If this had been the way things were from the very beginning, I wouldn't complain about it (I just wouldn't buy the app); but they changed the rules in a totally unacceptable way along the way without even having the decency to inform their users.

I PAID FOR YOUR SOFTWARE and now YOU ARE HARVESTING MY APPLICATION USAGE AND STEALING *MY* DATA.

What is worst, how can anyone could trust that the information they HARVEST FROM YOU is truly anonymous and whatever? For what is worth to me, they are shady as fuck. Luckily I never went with a Setapp subscription no matter how many times they approached with numerous discounts.

The app itself is great, congratz to the engineering team -- but the fucker(s) who made the brilliant decisions to go ahead and screw me can go fuck themselves.

I'll be compiling a list of alternative applications that can replace any and every feature of CMM and publishing it back here. I prefer any day to expend the same amount of money on legit developers and F/LOSS projects than expending a dime on THIEVES like MacPaw.

I don't get it what's up with these guys but I feel I'm forced to update this review because what is fair, is fair:

In the new version of this utility, called CleanMyMac X, THEY BROUGHT BACK THE PRIVACY SETTINGS -- whathafack!?

Did they do this because of customers (like me) uproar?
Did they do it because they suddenly realize what they were doing was unethical (I feel a little bit naive about this one :)?
Or did they do it because they understood that they business could possibly be damaged if the word of what they were doing started to spread like a gunpowder trail?

In any case it looks like my above concerns have been addressed in this new release.

I'm genuinely interested in learning how this drama develops as again, I'm not sure I'm understanding what's happening here.

Indispensable utility for seeing what software is naughty, and what software is nice... HandsOff. https://www.oneperiodic.com/products/handsoff/

But for less technically sophisticated users, a simpler alternative with a lovely interface is Radio Silence: https://radiosilenceapp.com

Both have the capability to block communications. While Radio Silence is easier to use, it is all or nothing on blocking the communications. HandsOff! can block a particular server and a particular port from an application inbound or outbound. Has a very nice highly sophisticated interface but you will definitely learn about network protocols using HandsOff! (not a bad thing really)

A lot of hate 'reviews' for this app. Still, this is a great tool to clean up your Mac. The good thing about this tool is that YOU are in control. Before removing items, it is very easy to over watch what is going to removed when you hit the remove button. Most negative comments here very probably didn't even launch/tried this tool. As everything, first try it out in demo mode and see if this fits the bill for you. If not, ignore it but be honest about it when writing about it. If yes, buy it and be happy. :-) I do think it is a bit too expensive though. Luckily there are frequent promos for this app.

Oh, I tried it and it works... until I realized how many copies of this app were on my hd and how hard it is to get rid of them. I think why people don't like this app is its aggressive "marketing" strategy which has the nature of a virus. I would prefer to decide myself when to install a piece of software!

Utility does some great things. Nice interface. Like Gymnastics, we start at a perfect score and work down... - 1 star because you still need other utilities to clean all caches - 1 star because it advertises to you after you pay the somewhat expensive license fee - 1 star because I can't use it on both my machines without two licenses or moving the license back and forth - 1 star because the copy protection can actually disable you if you have a disk problem and have to recover from time machine and can't disable the software... or upgrade and don't realize or forget you have the extra headache inspired by their copy protection

CMM is a very good 'keep-your-system-clean' tool. It really is ! Onyx can do most things too, for free, but it lacks control. CMM gives a clear list of what it will and can delete. If you think some things are not obsolete, uncheck it. It's simple as that. However, one should not hit the big 'clean' button right away. Closer inspection of what to remove is advised. So maybe not for the beginner but most certainly more secure than Onyx. Onyx just removes everything, so no way to verify what it removes. I do have a problem with the high price tag. Luckily, it comes with rebates at regular times. So if you are in no hurry, wait for those. I do recommend this app.

I'd give zero stars if I could. Had to format hard drive because it corrupted my system as it deleted files it wasn't allowed to delete. Second time it deleted Photos trash but didn't clear up the drive. It took hours of tech support requiring me to backup from Backblaze and reformat the drive.

Can you give some pointers which app does the same and gives you total control of what it will delete? Onyx most certainly removes everything without you verifying things. Any other apps I can check out for free?

As a certified macOS server admin – I am well-aware of what should and should *not* be done to 'clean' and 'optimize' a Mac. Less is often more. If PhotoJedi finds comfort in an expensive solution – totally cool. I am thankful that I do not have to support CMM users when they hose their system and prefs.

Disk Drill is a way better option! CleanMyMac is absolute bloatware and Mac-Keeper like. Buyers beware! It has become the Microsoft Office of system cleaners, and not in the good way. Choose one thing and do it well... instead of trying to do everything.

To my surprise, Clean My Mac is a very good app to remove unneeded files. It does find a lot of files that could be considered useless (email attachments, caches, ..)
But I do not like it is forcing you to remove all files it found after it scanned your system. So don't push the big Clean button at the bottom right a way.
I recommend verifying all found files manually and remove them when you are sure they are not obsolete.

One thing I also do not like: it always drops a LaunchAgent in the ../<username>/library/LaunchAgents folder. So every time you boot your system, it will run that script (whatever it does but my guess is some sort of (adds) scheduling).
This should be a preference, so users can disable this.

I now give this app 3 stars. When the devs adds a preference to stop forcing the LaunchAgent, I would gladly rerate it to 4 or even 5 stars.

I recommend trying this before buying but make sure you remove the LaunchAgent !

It doesn't force you to do anything. You can review each file it found before deleting it, and you can choose not so delete any files. Nothing is forced.

BLUF: A bit over priced but it does what it says and is very useful.. It is a little annoying that it has advertising for it's other products built into the user interface displays. I paid for this... I should not have to deal with ad-ware. Never the less, a good utility, good features, helped my misbehaving macOS 10.12. Details: The interface is clean, easy to use but with enough tech-extras to make it appealing to the hands on person as well. The tech extras are subtle, try right clicking on screen elements... This utility can perform the clean up and more importantly it can leverage the Finder to show you **exactly** what it is cleaning up. The tech-extras show do this with the magnifying glass and various path names that it both displays and yields back. What I particularly like is the ability to collect all the macOS sprawl into one place. Like Windows, there is now junk *everywhere* from installers, and in many places now that are hidden from the user (like Services menu item in the Finder or "Launch Agents" not to be confused with "Login Items" which users can see). Management of macOS has become a part-time job and CleanMyMac is a great assistant for things that are simply not worth your time to mentally track. Free version has enough features to make it a keeper even if you think $40 is too high. Tech extras are there too which make it a worth while keeper. But be careful, you might find yourself using it enough to say "oh heck I could use the rest and they do deserve to get paid for a job well done". Then you go looking for coupons as CleanMyMac does issue discount codes periodically, up to 50% off as I have seen. Recommendation: Impressive clean up that actually works. Use with intelligence, watch what you are cleaning. - 1 star for the adware integrated into the user interface.

THIS APP CAN REALLY IMPAIR YOUR SYSTEM!

A few minutes ago I was looking through my ~/Library/Group Containers folder and found some leftovers from uninstalled apps. I decided to run CMM again to see if it would find them this time.

NOPE.

I ran a "system junk" scan and noticed a category called "Development Junk." CMM's description of this category says "applications may create some supporting files during installation and configuration process. They become useless afterward. You can remove them without harming your system."

WRONG!

Only one item was found, but it's a Photoshop plugin I installed 4 days ago. It's in my Applications folder, and this POS considers it useless development junk?

If CMM was really any good it would have listed itself as useless junk in the search results!

It was removed before it could cause irreparable harm.
