So Far so good. 1) However, I am having difficulty blocking HTTPS:// sites. Is there something special that I am supposed to do to make the program block https:// sites? Currently I am logging in the site as (example)... 127.0.0.1 https://huffingtonpost.com Am I doing it correctly? 2) I am also having trouble with foreign websites from NZ etc. Gas Mask keeps underlining them in RED (same for https). Does the red underline mean anything??? 3) Is there an instruction manual for this program/app?

Is there a way to reorder items in the list in Gas Mask? I have a bunch of sequentially-numbered servers saved there and my need to have things listed in order is driving me crazy... If not here, is there a better forum to post my question?

Just copy the contents you want to sort, then do it in the Terminal:

pbpaste | sort | pbcopy

Then your clipboard contains the sorted list. If you want to sort by domains, exchange "sort" for "sort -k2", i.e. the sorting will be based on column 2 of the hosts list.

Link to GitHub where dev is at least attempting to resolve Sierra issues. I kind of gave up and just use Terminal commands at this point. I liked the simplicity and speed of Gas Mask, but I'm going to wait until I hear they've got all the kinks out before using it again.

Despite the existing vulnerability, I give it high marks.

I've been using this app for quite some time and find it invaluable.
It makes it extremely easy to edit the hosts file, and multiple versions can be saved, making it quick and easy to switch between them (for testing etc.).

I currently have over 27000 entries, and haven't noticed a slowdown from the original hosts file.

This is a good source for hosts file blocklists:
https://github.com/StevenBlack/hosts

Lately I've been using the Unified hosts + gambling + porn list.

It worked perfectly as it should. But then I closed the program and I now can't find it to use it again or modify what I have done. It isn't in the Apps folder and I have searched for it in spotlight and finder and can only find the installation file (which does nothing now when I click on it). Help! Where does this program install?

Sorry for the obviously w-a-y late reply. If you simply close the app window, double-clicking the actuall app won't do anything because the app is still running although without a window. Check the menubar for its icon. Or don't close the app window but, instead, "quit" the app when you're done.

Hi Rumplestiltskin. Thanks to your reply. But the App has been closed down, not just the window. It does show in the list of open apps. I can't click on the app to try to restart as it doesn't show in the applications folder. So where is it is the question. Is there a particular file name I can search for as "gas mask" is not returning any results. Thanks for your help.

Well, you launched it so it's probably where you downloaded it (Downloads folder?). If not, download it again and put it into your Applications folder. Then you'll know where it is. You may quit the app from it's menubar icon if you accidentally just close its window and don't quit it before closing its window.

I've been wanting to use my hosts file to block access to undesirable websites, but didn't want the hassles of manually editing and updating it. Then I discovered Gas Mask, which makes it oh-so-easy to use alternate hosts files. All I had to do was launch it, add a new remote hosts file (I use http://someonewhocares.org/hosts/hosts), activate the new hosts file, and I'm done. It will update the hosts file when new versions are available, so I don't have to do anything more. And as an added bonus, I have cool gas mask icon in my menubar.

Awesome! Gas Mask not only edits hosts files with ease, it also manages multiple hosts files. I like that it stays out of the way unless I'm using it, unlike another hosts file editor that plops itself in my System Preferences pane. The icon is the ultimate in cool. I put it in my dock just to show it off. Works fine in Mavericks 10.9.3.

A most excellent useful utility that makes editing the hosts file child's play. Three minor issues that I have:- 1. using this utility adds and additional 'Permissions Repair' job to OS X's permission repair procedure when executed from Disk Utility. There is a permission repair for the 'hosts file' that never goes away every single time permission repair is executed. It is perpetual. 2. Not sure why, but if I click on setting within Gas Mask the setting windows won't show unless I open the editor window and then suddenly both windows open. This never happened on a previous version (a few versions back I think).... Or is it the other way round, i.e. click on settings to get the editor window open; I'm not 100% because I've just reinstalled Mac OS X & Bootcamp and have yet to install Gas Mask back as well as many other apps. 3. If I remember correctly, Gas Mask may not always automatically run upon 'log-in/boot up' even though start with login is enabled. Otherwise an excellent utility and a must have if above could be remedied.

I just updated to 0.7 and I don't see any difference. The app was always a bit hard to find until I got used to it - I too didn't think it was running because there was no window open. I'd try to open it several times, getting more annoyed with each attempt. Then I found the icon in my menu bar, and it's been all good since. It's the same for 0.7: click the icon, then click Show Editor Window. Unfortunately, for the sites I've blocked a browser window still opens. But at least the page doesn't load - I end up with a page that says "Safari can't connect." Guess that's still better than seeing an ad, many of which are loud and obnoxious.

Excellent... simple and it works. I switch hosts files constantly as I develop on my local server but want to keep domain references when I move the files to the live server. I was about to say it'd be nice to have a menubar selection for my hosts files... then I looked at the menubar... it's there. Well thought out... well executed... I'm off to the developer's site to donate.

Exceptional, though there are three things I would like to see added or addressed. First, it shouldn't need to run resident if the host file is truly being reinitiated via a cache flush. Second, it is quite slow to launch, though in part that might be that I'm using a hefty host file with additions from some of the adblock IP sites out there. Third, and this is a very minor idea, it might be nice for some who are timid about this kind of thing to have a little "wizard" dialogue that walks a timid newbie through adding and entry to the end of the hosts list. Again, this is a breath of fresh air... and eases the process of being add-free beyond just a browser plug-in. I have multiple browsers and web-access programs that are now more free of bandwidth parasites!

I downloaded gasmask onto my OS X version 10.6.7 and it didnt work. A default page came up (MT Media Temple server default page). It stopped me from seeing my live website and from seeing the website that was in progress of being built. My website it now live and I can't see it or access the admin page. I tried taking gasmask off my computer (by trashing it and emptying the trash). I emptied the cache and reset safari but it still wont let me view the admin page of my website. Have I done something wrong in the way I have deleted Gas Mask? Are the codes that I loaded still in the system somewhere. HELP!

Sounds great. Unfortunately, I wouldn’t know what to do with the Hosts file once I’d gotten it open with this app. I’ve heard a lot about blocking specific domains with it — can anyone tell me how to do that, or how to use Gas Mask to do that? Thanks!

There's a glitch with this app in Lion. Whenever I edit the hosts file outside of using Gas Mask (doing it manually, basically), when I open Gas Mask, it doesn't show the newly added information to the hosts file in Gas Mask... no matter how many times I re-open the app. However, once I delete the Gas Mask preferences file and re-launch the app... it shows everything that was added to the hosts file. Every time I edit the hosts file manually, I have to delete the Gas Mask preferences file in order for it to display the information correctly. It works fine, of course... when I just simply use Gas Mask to edit the Hosts file, but there are some cases in which I do it by hand. Just a minor annoyance. Love the app, though.

Just what the doctor ordered. Finally a good alternative for Hostsman (XP) on the Mac. Please add search functionality to this app, so it's easier to find and edit/delete individual entries. It would also be fantastic if this app could automatically download the MVPS hosts file at set intervals. An iPod Touch/iPhone version of Gas Mask would be killer, I'd pay for it. Thanks for making this app, it's the first that gets installed on any Mac I encounter.

This is a great app!!! If you're open for suggestion, I would suggest your future changes will be: - A short help page - In Window mode, Apple menu bar does not show your app as an active window, add Quit and Help menu there would be great - Hosts file editor looks pretty if you're using a fixed length font style (Monaco?) Thanks,

Adding menu bar is difficult in Leopard. It's impossibe to add menu bar while application is running. The only way to do it is to close the application, change the application bundle and relaunch the application (Quicksilver is doing exactly that). But changing application bundle is big no-no, application should not change it. Well, I'm thinking about it, I would like it to have menu bar in window mode also.

Is it really that hard? Looking at the screenshot, you can see a list of the host files of which only 1 can be active on the system (selected by using the tick button). By default there will usually only be a single default hosts file in /etc (called hosts). To add a new configuration click the plus button, to remove it click the remove button. The save button obviously saves changes to the hosts config. So basically the app allows you to rapidly swap between configurations on the fly. If you don't know what a hosts file is try searching in your favourite search engine for 'unix hosts file'. It's pretty much a file that tells your computer which IP address is associated with what URL. You can use it to re-direct addresses and block advertisements at the system level. If you are interested in that then search for 'ad blocking hosts file' instead :) The developer nor I should not have to hold your hand and spoon feed you information. If you want to learn, you can (and will).

Thank you for your considered comments Roaming Nomad. I guess you missed the bit regarding "Please be considerate of other users and avoid insults, the use of profanity or otherwise inappropriate comments". My original comment from over 14 months ago is still as valid as it is now and was helpful despite the mild rant regarding laziness. Now that you have stereotyped me as a jerk after reading from 1 single post on the internet I can only assume you took offence because you also don't bother to experiment or attempt to try and read from the manuals (when provided). Comments like these must grate on your nerves because of the level of honesty that was provided?

I agree that the Help is lacking. I also agree that Encro's response about spoon feeding was condescending. I have a major complaint about Gas Mask. When I hit my Backspace key, the entire hosts file is deleted. The Undo button does not work in that case. Encro, if you assume that I am an inexperienced user, you are mistaken.

Hi JS88, That does sound like something that should have a warning before file removal. I'd recommend reporting this one to Siim on: http://code.google.com/p/gmask/issues/list as the comment may get buried in this 4 year old thread. Just to clarify I'm not the developer of this software and was merely a user back in 2008 :) Thanks
