I've used both Flash and After Effects for years, and can definitely say that Toon Boom Animate is much more adapted to an animation workflow. I am still getting to know it, but so far it seems great. It's not perfect, by any means. Lots of kinks so far. I had to google the keyboard shortcut for the brush because it's not mentioned in the help pop-ups or the contextual menu's. I'm also having some issues with z-depth/layer arrangement (v 7.7). Needs some work, and in my opinion it needs to be conformed more to standards of operation, (ie, shortcuts) but overall it's definitely the best 2D and basic 3D ap i've used.

The other comments don't understand what this application does. It is in fact a production application to create high end animation for TV and film. In regards to creating animations, it is probably more correct to say that you can do some of the stuff in Flash that you can do in Animate but not as quickly or easily. There are some things you can do in Animate that you just can't do in Flash. Flash excels at creating interactive media (including animation) for the web, while Animate sticks to animation in a pure sense (although you can save material in Flash format). There is some crossover but the emphasis of each application is different. With that said, the tools available in Animate are extensive and liberating if you are into creating pure animation. It is a very well thought out application but with quite a steep learning curve. I upgraded from Toon Boom Studio and am very happy with my purchase. I also use Flash in my work and it is a great tool as well. Check out the demo and see if it does what you want. One caveat is that it is a newer application and I have experienced some bugs and occasional crashing (so save often).

Isn't there already a proven piece of software for the same money that does the same thing called Adobe Flash? Flash is a tried and true piece of software that is essentially the industry standard. If you're going to put out a piece of software that does something similar, you might want to start out at a much lower price point than your main competitor...just to show there is a cheaper alternative. For the same money, I would just go with Flash knowing that its well supported by the developers (and a huge Flash community), has tons of innovative features, and is more likely to be properly tested and be more stable on the systems it supports. Plus if you already own an earlier version, you can upgrade for $199 to CS4.

This isn't to say this program is bad, but never having heard of it before...and just now seeing it pop up for the same money as Flash...it had better be just as good if not better for that price.

Even at $700 (instead of the retail $1000) the price for this is ridiculous.
