Speaker Mute helps enforce Computer Lab "Quiet Zones". Great for iMac labs, Speaker Mute detects the presence of headphones and mutes the speakers if none are found. If the user tries to turn up the volume, it gets muted and displays a message explaining that headphones are required.

This would be far more useful to me if it could be toggled to be on at certain times of day (or night) or during certain events, but remain off normally.

Thanks for the input tragobmij. So that you know, in response to several requests I have written two utilities, "Disable Speaker Mute" and "Enable Speaker Mute", that will allow you to do just what they say. They are available for download at my website at http://www.ryanharter.com.

I know this isn't quite the "scheduling" you are looking for, but know that this is something I'm working on for version 2.

Quite tricky to install - you have to restart your computer.

Besides, it kept crashing on mine, anytime I hit a volume button while Speaker Mute was running. (MacBook, OS X 4.9.)
What a pity.

I added some code recently that is not fully supported in Mac OS X prior to 10.5. It may work, but is not thoroughly tested, in 10.4. Sorry I missed this before, I've updated the requirements on the download page.
