Stuf overview

Stuf is a multiple clipboard manager that can share your clippings over the Internet using DropBox, share images and text with your friend and co-workers, copy on one machine, paste on another!

Stuf lets you categorize all your clippings, on your machine and on other Macs running Stuf. Stuf is also available for Windows.

The Mac release now supports AppleScript before and after pastes. For example, use an AppleScript to reply to a selected email, let Stuf paste in the Clipping, then another Script to actually send the mail.

I have been using Stuf from the very first release version. Version 1 was a boon to me. One reason is because the menubar icon indicates at clipboard usage. Version 2 has lost this very handy feature. In addition, version 2 has a giant icon at every entry in the clipboard's history. The only drawback to version 1 that I can see, is that it is slower on first use after a reboot/login. I have downgraded back to version 1.56 I give version 2, two and one-half stars

Upgrade from version 1.55 to 2.0.9 broke all my Descriptions (just large A's there now). Hundreds of Serial Numbers and other important info without any association now. That's too bad because it finally looks more the way I would have designed it from the beginning. I really miss iSnip. That was one superb clipboard app.

I originally had Stuf 1.0.. It was dark HUDlike (yuck), it's network clipboards were cranky if they worked at all, and the overall UI was confusing. I think I would have given Stuf 1.x three stars. Stuf 2.0x, however is a joy to use if you have DropBox. After making a /Stuf/{ComputerName}/ directory per machine, BOTH of my Macs are happily sharing clipboards back and forth. Yes, you need to use Dropbox.app, but if you have iPhones & iPads sharing texts back and forth.. you're already doing this. The new UI might need a LITTLE polish, but at this point the only quibble for 'new' users is the price. Oh, and THANK YOU to The Escapers for making this a FREE upgrade to old Stuf users. Can't thank you guys enough.

Stuf is unstable and the network feature is broken. This app hasn't been updated in over a year. The developer's focus is Flux, hence Stuf will continue to be neglected.

I'm not a fan of HUD windows really, but stuf is a really good application if you ask me. Check out permute for a beautiful application interface (it's not a clipboard app), and snowtape also has got a gorgeous interface while being a normal rather than a HUD window. To each his own i guess. The menubar icon menu gives you the most recent clippings for fast access, but they are using a non standard font size for that (i would prefer if that font size was an optional setting), and the separator lines between those recent clippings are unnecessary and only make the menu look busier than it is (IMHO, of course).

The previous reviewer mentioned the clipboard sharing features of Stuf as if they were an after thought. In fact, it's Stuf's main advantage. Stuf makes it easy to provide little bits of information from one computer to another on your network. In addition, it tends to be much faster at handling rapid copy & paste operations than some of the other clipboard products I've tried that don't have this feature. (As a developer, I'm copying & pasting little bits of code all the time, and Stuf is able to keep up.) On the downside, there are some stability issues and bugs that have long gone unaddressed. I have not yet tried this updated version, so I can't comment on whether they've been fixed or not. Lack of any developer involvement in their own forums seems to indicate that they're not terribly interested in the product anymore, which is a shame, because the potential is huge. Finally, let me say that an iPhone app would make Stuf complete.

Interesting take on clip storage/retrieval. Better GUI than most. Lots of handy tools via the contextual menu. Be nice to have a few more Menubar icons choices. Plus - definitely remove the 'delete all items' from the quick paste menu - That's an accident in the waiting... Maybe some options within the menubar ( delete item, paste plain text etc... ) rather than having to open Stuf up all the time, but that's not really a problem. My overall verdict... If you have twenty bucks to spare, this isn't a bad alternative and worth a try. But it's not going to win many friends priced at $20. Unless you need it's 'sharing clipboard capabilities'

Of all the clipboard utilities out there this is still my favorite. It has a very nice clean elegant user interface. I have Clips, Clipboard Evolved, and tried a couple of other ones and none of them are as stable and reliable as stuf.

I would like to add some input from my extensive experience with Stuf, formally known as Shadow. My experience with Stuf has been pleasurable. They are constantly improving the application, they listen to feedback and implement suggestions VERY quickly. Here is an example (from my email correspondence): On Sep 23, 2009 at 12:39 AM, I wrote: I have been using Stuf for quite some time, and lately, I have noticed a REALLY long delay in pasting some things ... On Sep 23, 2009, at 2:41 AM, The Escapers Team wrote: Unfortunately, this is a known problem, we're aware of what causes it, but not how to fix it just yet. The problem revolves around AppleScript, which Stuf uses to tell an application to "paste", for some reason the AppleScript engine is taking a while to "warm up" in each application, so your first paste will be slow, but consequent pastes should be perfectly fast. ... On Sep 23, 2009, at 8:18 PM, I wrote: Okay, thank you for the prompt response. By the way, I do have a suggestion, or maybe I just missed something in the preferences. I would love a way to select the default pasting to be in plain text instead of formatted text. Being able to turn this off or on would be great. Thanks again. On Sep 24, 2009, at 1:38 PM, The Escapers Team wrote: Hmm, I'd probably like that too! Should be easy enough to implement, will see about doing that. On Oct 19, 2009, at 6:20 AM, The Escapers Team wrote: Just so you know, the option to default to pasting plain text is now implemented and will be in a release this week.. Now that is customer service .. AWESOME! Pros: Stuf has a great interface, very Mac-like and progressive, simple non-intrusive menubar icon, keyboard shortcut option, options for default plain text pasting (my favorite option) and networked sharing capability for multiple clipboards (very functional). Of course, the great customer service. Stability is good for me as I have only had a couple of problems with Stuf during my appr. year of use. Cons: Stuf is slow on first pasting, and it has been mentioned that it does not handle 200+ remembered items (but who needs 250 copied items remembered, to be honest, not me).

It's a great piece of software when it works, I got it quite some time ago and found it to be very buggy but the developers are quick to fix bugs. With that said they still haven't fixed problems related to the program's stability. I find that it becomes slow and unusable when more items are "memorized" and it beach balls my old last generation 15" PowerBook with Mac OS 10.4 even with just 3 text items. Speed and stability ruins what could be a great and very handy program.

I also love the look...but over 200+ clips Stuf is unusable (slow and unstable)! 1. Make the sidebar Hide/Show ASAP! 2. Text size and font customization (on non formatted option) ASAP! 2 The search Bar should be expandable and safari alike (move it up, Search-on-the-fly...). 3. Delete the anoying info message on the bottom. 4 . No delays...speed! thanks:)

This program is PURE GARBAGE. I fired it up on my dual 2.5 GHz G5 running 10.5.5 and it did not have the courtesy to bring itself into focus. Not able to find it running on my system nor to recall what it does, I tried to Google more information on "Shadow." Imagine my surprise when I could no longer type the letter "a". I had to go to Activity Monitor and quit the process from there. I can't believe something this buggy would ever be released on an unwitting public. I think MacUpdate should remove this program from its database until the developers do sufficient beta testing.

Having tried most of the clipboard applications out there, I have to say this is one of the better ones. The UI is fabulous, stability great and usability is getting there. The dev is VERY responsive and seems committed to the app, unlike some others out there. I look forward to offering my thanks for the effort by purchasing a license.

Looks promising! Now if you could add filters with Grep patterns (like in PTHPasteboard Pro) for pasting through the filters, this would be fantastic tool!
