TestDisk overview
TestDisk download contains TWO programs - TestDisk and PhotoRec. They are used on the command line in the Terminal. As a result, these programs are designed for support personnel and experienced Mac users.
The TestDisk program is powerful free data recovery software! It was primarily designed to help recover lost partitions and/or make non-booting disks bootable again when these symptoms are caused by faulty software, certain types of viruses or human error (such as accidentally deleting a Partition Table).
It will also find accidentally deleted partitions (either Apple Partitions, the newer EFI partitions and Windows MBR Partitons) and provide the necessary information for you to restore them using the Apple pdisk command (for Apple Partitions) or the gpt command for (for EFI partitions)
PhotoRec is file data recovery software designed to recover lost files including video, documents and archives from Hard Disks and CDRom and lost pictures (thus, its 'Photo Recovery' name) from digital camera memory. PhotoRec ignores the filesystem and goes after the underlying data, so it will still work even if your media's filesystem has been severely damaged or re-formatted.
PhotoRec can recover data from various filesystems including FAT, NTFS and HFS+.

I had to use TestDisk a long time ago, I don't remember exactly what was my issue — I think it was a damaged partition — and TestDisk was my last resort and it worked!
So, now, I always have it installed on my computers, should I ever need it again. :-)

I'v used the windows version and it saved my as..Ssss.
I had updated the HD firmware, the partition was gone and this utility brought back my files. I've used the browsing mode so I had my important files back in 5 min. No need to scan 5 hours in my case. It's command line based but menu driven so it's quite easy actually.
I'v used the beta version 7.

Cannot install on Mac OS X 10.9.4 Mavericks using MacUpdate Desktop. I have posted this question at TestDisk Board URL at: http://forum.cgsecurity.org/phpBB3 and will update this review when it is resolved.

Look, I'm in IT, and this is still too hard.
It doesn't appear to actually check and fix a directory, only the partition map.
I tried to create an image of my dead drive at /dev/disk2 onto the internal drive onto /dev/disk0s2 and it just has an obscure error:
"Couldn't create file" or some rubbish. TELL ME WHY NOT

DeFacto multi platform support. Recovering Windows based data from dead or dying drives is a snap- hosed partition table? Not able to mount the drive from another OS due to problems, and so not able to recover files? This is the tool for you.
Its not an elegantly GUI'd app but that's not important really. This gets the job done efficiently and its free. Can't beat that.

This is THE ONE..
TestDisk goes deeper than the mighty Disk Warrior to rescue drives where the file system has been completely destroyed..
Those disks that come up as being unformatted / advising initialisation? This set of tools get's right in there to diagnose and repair as far as is possible.
As far as the magnetic data goes (including boot / file system) TestDisk will confirm decisively whether your hard drive is saveable or whether it needs hardware recovery (or wether it should be used a paperweight).
Don't be put off by the Terminal-based interface. It's not "command-line" in the sense that instills terror in non-coders. It's just a series of fairly easy questions requiring one-character answers (like y for yes and n for no) in white text on a black background.

PhotoRec made miracles on several picture cards from both myself and some bodies of mine that asked for help after seeing the results that I've got.
It's an app with a CLI (command line interface) but is easy enough to remain usable for a common mortal.

This is a great, little piece of software, that goes even beyond commercial apps in some respects. It saved my holiday's photos on two separate occasions, and I strongly recommend to support its future development (I've just donate using PayPal). Keep up the good work!

I had a media card (SxS 16 GB) full of HD video (indie film) go bad on me yesterday. Couldn't see data or even reliably mount the card. Needless to say, this was not a good thing. Spent hours trying everything I could think of, with various well-known software packages, trying to get anything recovered. Even spent money on some other media card recovery software in desperation. Nothing worked in any way. Until I tried TestDisk! WOW. Sure, it is a command-line program, but IT WORKS and it COPIED the data INTACT without much trouble. I'm near ecstatic. THANK YOU, TestDisk!

Saved my external firewire drive that had been incorrectly ejected (and had a damaged partition table as a result). DiskWarrior couldn't do it; Drive Genius couldn't do it; TechTool couldn't do it...yet tiny open source freeware TestDisk (along with companion command line utility pdisk) salvaged the partitions in a matter of maybe four minutes.
The documentation (like that of so many open source projects) is a bit arcane, and those of you who are not comfortable in the Terminal might be a little nervous about this app. But I found a walkthrough that made it dead simple.
This is a brilliant little utility that's going right into my recovery arsenal.

Brilliant, brilliant app! Having accidentally destroyed the master boot record (MPR), and lost a couple of partitions on my macbook pro internal drive, AND gone through the usual suspects for trying to resurrect a drive, I was beginning to despair and just on the verge of shelling out $100+ for a programme to just get the files back (but wouldn't resurrect the partition itself), I came across this little app.
The destruction manual could do with a little more info, as I didn't really believe it could do the job all by itself from what I had read, but lo and behold, it did. For free, as in beer.
If you are trying to recover a lost partition, give this a shot - especially on an intel mac, it's suhweet.

This is one of the greatest free apps I've ever used. I have solved some very difficult problems concerning data loss a couple times both in Windows and Mac.
This is very capable software even when compared to those expensive apps.
