DMG Architect overview

DMG Architect... Easily add your own custom window backgrounds, files and icons. Total WYSIWYG control of everything including background image and window location. Use any image for your container icon, not just .ICNS files. Even change the icon of files already added to a project. No artwork? No problem. Choose a theme from our gallery of backdrops and icons.
  • Build: Revise your project as often as you need and at any stage. Add and update text without editing your background images. Typos are painless to fix. Accessing your Mac's powerful security features is easier than ever - add encryption for extra protection. Don't forget the End User License Agreement. Putting legal notices where they belong is simple.
  • Release: Burn your project directly to CD or DVD, no need for other apps. Release your project as a tamper-proof disk image.

Good application but is not 64bit, so no running in Catalina (10.15). The developer no longer references the application on their website. Further support is not likely.

In all seriousness... you get what you pay for. Buy Drop DMG. I was using this app for some time, but in the end it was too unreliable, too restrictive, and just a little too quirky. Drop DMG.

Works fine: but IMMO with Mountain Lion it needs an update: an option to sign DMG's with an Apple ID ! Writing readme files to explain how to disable GateKeeper isn't a good idea. Developer, me , seems to be a poor coder.

The app is great, very nice, enough features, etc. Too bad it crashes when trying to create the dmg, which makes the app useless.

- DMG Architect crashes when using some non-ASCII characters for the disc image name. - Grid preferences are not saved, they reset every time. - Window Sizes are not accurate. It also takes the apps toolbar as part of the window's height (?) - Compressed disk image format is not compressed at all. It needs serious polishing, but its a good app. =)

Some great features, but also really needs some vital additions: -One currently cannot import icons (folders) made with IconBuilder Pro. Old image files of icons are long gone, so only option is to import folder icon images, which DMGA won't let me do (I installed Apple's Icon Composer to remedy this, this did not work). -Also had a similar problem: I tried to copy+paste icons from these same folders onto the opened .dmg and unopened .dmg files (via command+I), and I cannot. The icons are somehow locked, and I can't unlock them. Really irritating. Why I can't change them, I don't know. -Image was successfully imported into the background, but when .dmg file is saved and opened, the window is slightly smaller than the image inside it. I could not re-save the folder size to exactly match size of imported image. One out of ten tries (approximately) this doesn't happen, the image and window display successfully. But one out of ten isn't exactly a good track record. Overall the dev has made a very stable app with some very good features - but it's the missing features that really hobble this app to the point where the customizing of the overall .dmg folder/file is very limited. If users really wanted to be limited to a very restrictive set of features, then it would be fine. If the dev expanded the individual customization features more it would be well worth the price. Currently it is not.

Out of respect for the developer, I'm not going to talk too much trash. However, there are a few things I do want to point out here, so Dev, please take them as pointers / advice: - DMG A is VERY UNSTABLE. It freezes every time I try to build an image for some reason (may just be me or my mac though!). - $30 for something you can do yourself is way too much. SimplyDisk, which does the exact same thing (and which is VERY stable and has just as many options) is more than $10 cheaper. If I had to choose, I would definitely go for SD than DA. - Try something else regarding the licenses.

Some interesting functionality and features, but a couple of gotchas too. 1. File name extensions get stripped off in the designer view, and you line everything up accordingly. Once the .dmg is created the file extensions reappear and as I found, the filenames then overlap and look messy so care is needed in the design phase. 2. I dragged 12 files on to a new/blank .dmg and found that they were automatically arranged into a single-width vertical column that extended off beyond the bottom of the window. While possible to rearrange the files near the top, the other files went past the bottom of the visible window and with no scroll bars there was no way to get them back. Only option was to delete the project and start again. Tried this with/without 'snap to grid' being turned on. Not quite there yet for me.

I am amazed. The developer of this software sayd that the comments are false. They never asked before to MacUpdate to remove all comments. Why? take a look: http://maczot.com/discuss/?p=891 so please MacUpdate staff, don't censure this message.

The grid functionality is a neat idea. It got me thinking though. Two similar features would be really nice: - Alignment guides (like in iWork) allowing you to easily align icons with each other or with the center of the window. - Drop zones in the templates, allowing you to drop an icon into straight into the right position. Also, the icon size should probably default to 128x128, seeing as all the templates are set up for icons that size.

There is really no need for this, all you have to do is create a read/write image of your files first/ Then to get a backgroung- just add your image to the disk, select that picture in View Options & "/developer/tools/setfile -V PATHTOIMAGE" in the terminal. It is also easy to change the disk icon :-) But if you want to pay to change the default file icon- be my guest

good app - no question… - but the developers punish you to buy a new license in case of a hardware failure (if you had to buy a new Mac) so good luck guys - I will trash the app now and search for another one… what a shame!
