SmartSleep overview

SmartSleep is a preference pane that dynamically sets the sleep state of your machine. It's a successor to Hibernate.prefPane.

The Problem - Your MacBook or MacBook Pro knows the following sleep states:

  • sleep: machine will go to sleep only (saves state in RAM only, battery keeps RAM contents)
  • sleep and hibernate: machine sleeps and hibernates. (default)
  • hibernate only: machine will go to hibernate only. (saves state on disk, battery will not be used)
  • Just sleep means that the notebook will go to sleep fast, but you loose the ability to change the battery as the battery is needed to keep the contents of the memory (RAM).
  • Just sleep and hibernate will wake the computer fast, but sleeping will take ages as the contents of the memory are saved to disk before entering the sleep.
The solution - SmartSleep lets your notebook just sleep while the battery has a high level. If the battery level drops below a certain point (default is less than 20% or 20 minutes), it will switch to sleep and hibernate. So you have the best of both worlds.

What’s new in version 3.22

Updated on Sep 09 2013

Version 3.22:
  • Added default overrides for pmset. SmartSleep uses pmset to set the values for sleep, hibernate, sleep and hibernate and system default. You can now override the values that SmartSleep uses:
    • pmsetvalueforsleep
    • pmsetvalueforsleepandhibernate
    • pmsetvalueforhibernate
    • pmsetvalueforsystemdefault
  • Added Retina menu-bar icons - thanx to Mario Bieh for creating them.
  • Added OS-dependent update mechanism for future updates.
  • Added more Help pages.
  • Changed how the application behaves when it's installed incorrectly.
  • No longer needs a setting to explicitly allow running in background as SmartSleep does not need to follow Apples AppStore rules. So SmartSleep daemon automatically runs in background when you you use something other than System default as setting.
  • Fixed a bug that would cause SmartSleep not to set the correct sleep state when not run in background.
  • Fixed a bug that App Store receipts from older computers would not be moved away.
  • Fixed a few typos and linked to Info.html inside the dmg.

Can't get is working on 10.6.8. With SmartSleep enabled or not, hibernate or standby, the system still behaves same way like if it was just a normal stand by - no hibernation (or at least I don't see any progress bar showing the stuff is being saved on disk) and the light is still blinking indicating it's StandBy. Waking up same thing, no difference. I don't event know how the hibernation mode would look different from Standby. Am I missing something here? Or is it just not compatible with OSX 10.6.8?

I recently upgraded to 10.8.4 and an SSD drive and I'm not sure my 2012 MBP is entirely sleep happy. Quite often in the morning it will return slowly from hibernate even though power is connected, battery is at 100% and smart sleep is enabled. Also I notice the eyes blink in the menu item occasionally. And when I have Bartender running, the smartsleep icon appears randomly every few minutes, suggesting that something is bothering it (even though battery is 100% and power is in). Any thoughts? v3.22

Probably SmartSleep is doing something more, but SafeSleepOnce could be enough for most of us... (it is working great and is free... ;-)

SmartSleep is now at version 3.20. Anyone who bought the Mac App Store version can overwrite it with the latest version downloaded direct from the dev, and that version will automatically update when new versions are available. See the dev's website for details.

Howdy, Do NOT buy this via the App Store! The version you can directly download from the jinx web site is at version 3.18 and even seems to work under Mountain Lion! The cost directly from the jinx web site (via esellerate) is a bit higher than through the App Store but, again, the App Store version doesn't work. I already had a license via the App Store and followed the directions on the jinx site but the new version said it was unregistered so I ended up buying a second license to get it activated. So the answer is to pay the extra cost to buy it direct and don't spend the money at the App Store. Good Luck, Herb Schulz

I used it on 10.6, but with Lion, according to the developer website: "The AppStore version does not run correctly on lion due to a bug in lion. Apple does not allow me to update the AppStore version as the workaround for the bug requires admin privileges and is therefore not allowed in the AppStore." I tried the workaround but it just doesn't work.

What you see is what you get. You can't change when exactly it'll save to disk or ram for sleep. For example, if I want it to sleep in 1 hour and hibernate in 2, I can't do that. The battery basically has to be dead for it to activate. Otherwise you manually do it. You can make it run in the background, but it won't turn on by itself unless you set it in the system preferences.

My low rating is for the new app version of SmartSleep. I bought the app and used it for a couple of weeks, but recently uninstalled it and switched back to the free prefpane version. I really liked the new menubar item, but the actual "smart" sleep feature only works if the app is running all the time, which is an annoyance. I don't have a problem with the developer going commercial -- the price is very reasonable -- I just wish he'd kept it a prefpane instead of an app. I'm guessing he only made it an app so he could sell it via the AppStore.....

It is a PITY that this program has gone commercial.. What is the difference between the last FREE version 2.6 and the new commercial version 3.0? The last FREE version 2.6 runs great under Snow Leopard.

On the developer site it says: • Runs as a application not a preference pane. The MU description still says it's the latter, with an out-of-date image.

I installed this app due to its capability to "hibernate only", but recently it automatically hibernates when i close the lid. Isnt there any capability to auto sleep (instead of hibernate) when the lid is closed?

Has anyone had a problem with SmartSleep causing sleep-related lockups? I've got installed on my 13"MBP running 10.6.1, and when I set it to Smart Sleep, my Mac will, after a period of a day or so, fail to wake from sleep. When I hard restart it will boot to the blue screen but then go to sleep before getting to the login screen. I tried zapping the PRAM but that didn't help. The only way to get out of the sleep loop is to reset the PMU. It makes no difference if my Mac is plugged in or not. I looked at the developer's website but didn't see any place to seek support. Anyone?
