DVD Spanner... Do you have large folders full of files you would like to archive to DVD? The default Mac "Finder" interface to burning DVDs requires you to manually split the folder up into 4GB sections so you can burn it to separate disks. DVD Spanner solves that problem. Just specify the directory of files, and optionally a name for the disks, and it will automatically span the archive across multiple disks. DVD Spanner is freeware, meaning you don't need to pay for expensive alternatives. DVD Spanning software for the mac is now free!

I tried out DVD Spanner because I was running into lockups with a couple different major versions of that other, expensive, DVD burning app. The problem turned out to be partly my external burner. Anyway:

DVD Spanner did EXACTLY what I wanted to do which was make huge backups to a lot of DVDs. I was amazed that it has the 'Skip Empty Folders' feature which is important for how I make backups. I was very pleased to find that it can actually tell an internal burner from an external burner and let me choose. Ace! My many DVD disk backup burned great.

AND it verifies every burn! (If you don't like the time spent on verification, sorry, no option I can find to stop it).

AND it lets you Console log every little action it makes. So if your burn is messed up, you can see exactly why.

The only complaint I can make is that occasionally it takes a hellova long time to pre-build the disc images it uses before burns. I have no idea why. It only happened once, I walked away and let it do its thing, it eventually finished and did the burn perfectly. Every other disk image built very quickly. So, consider this an occasional odd problem.

∑ = What a GREAT little app for free. Does the Dev take donations? I'm going to find out...

BTW: I was using DVD Spanner on OS X 10.6.8 Snow Leopard.

It is NOT compatible with OS X 10.7.x Lion, and presumably on up. According to the developer:

"This is due to incompatibility with the underlying library (called CamelBones). Unfortunately the author of CamelBones passed away and so I now have to port DVD Spanner to another framework completely, which is a large and potentially slow task."

So keep in mind that OS X 10.6.8 is current the end-of-the-line for DVD Spanner! Unless the Dev rewrites it, don't use it beyond Snow Leopard.

And no, donations are not requested. But the Dev does ask that you write him if you like his application.

Absolutely brilliant! In an ever increasing world of file sizes, this is the most perfect simple and elegant solution to a problem that shouldn't have existed in the first place (are you listening Apple?)

Developer's link also will download version 0.02. Version tracker, etc. all the same; 2007 dated .dmg with version 0.02.
