Cocoa implementation of HTML Tidy.

Overview

Balthisar Tidy exists because, when editing HTML, it's easy to make mistakes. Wouldn't it be nice if there was a simple way to fix these mistakes automatically and tidy up sloppy editing into nicely layed out markup? Well now there is! This Cocoa implementation of Dave Raggett's HTML TIDY is a free utility for doing just that. It also works great on the atrociously hard-to-read markup generated by specialized HTML editors and conversion tools, and can help you identify where you need to pay further attention on making your pages more accessible to people with disabilities. See http://tidy.sourceforge.net/ for everything you need to know about Tidy. Download this if you want to do it the Mac Way.

What's new in Balthisar Tidy

Version 4.1.4:
  • System services now work again.
  • Sparkle (the web-distributed version’s automatic updater mechanism) now works once again.
  • The web-distributed version is notarized by Apple now.

I just discovered this gem today, and with the Tidy functionality having been dropped from BBEdit 11.0 -- and thus no more HTML auto-correction -- I am a very happy man. There is nothing to not like about this app which, by the way, is actually up to version 2.0.1, both on their website, as well as in the Mac App Store: • It is free. • It is modern, up-to-date Tidy code with the latest W3C specifications, and not the old 2004 - 2008 Tidy code. • It has a very simple, straightforward design with a lot of inline help. • It is Yosemite compatible. • You can tweak a long list of preferences to your heart's content so that your HTML docs look exactly the way that you want them to. • If you require batch processing, there is a commercial version in the Mac App Store which only costs like $8.00, and that is cheap for this gem. If you are a web designer and HTML coder who is picky about your HTML code, and who wants to make Googlebot happy, I recommend that you give this app a try. I don't think that you will be disappointed. No, I do not work for these folks; I was just so happy to find this today after learning that Tidy has been dropped from BBEdit.

I have already offered my personal remarks regarding this app in my previous comments on this same page. However, I was surprised to discover that despite how long this app has been available on MacUpdate.com, not one single other person has offered a comment or review for it, or given it a rating. Thus, I decided to leave an official review -- as opposed to just a comment -- so that I can give it a 5-star rating, which it fully deserves. For those of you who are interested, the commercial version of this app -- called "Balthisar Tidy for Work" -- is available in the Mac App Store for a mere $8.00. If you are a busy website developer who likes to check and automatically correct his or her HTML work -- including batch jobs consisting of dozens, hundreds or even thousands of HTML documents -- you will find Balthisar Tidy for Work to be a very useful app in your arsenal of web development tools. Go for it! Keep up the good work Jim.

I have been using the commercial version of this app -- Balthisar Tidy for Work, available in the Mac App Store -- for a year now, and I am happy to report that it continues to serve well my HTML code correction needs. The developer -- Jim Derry -- is very responsive to troubleshooting any problems which may arise, and is very cordial to boot. He continues to add new features and functionality to the app, as his time permits. I have no complaints, and I have the confidence and peace of mind that Balthisar Tidy for Work will produce code-perfect HTML documents whenever I use it.
