Birthday Bar is designed to be a persistent reminder of upcoming Birthdays, Anniversaries and yearly special events. At its most basic, Birthday Bar grabs date information from your Address Book and displays upcoming events in a bar along the top or bottom of your screen. Further, it provides quick links-like a menu item to e-mail the contact-to help manage the upcoming event. It updates itself automatically when your Address Book changes so that it is always showing the next upcoming birthdays and anniversaries.

I have been using this for several months and I find it very convenient as there is always a discreet on-screen reminder of the many birthdays and anniversaries I tend to forget. There are two items I would add to make this excellent little app even better:

1) Change of color if event is today.
2) The ability to change the font color as some of the backgrounds that I use are too dark for the black font to show-up clearly.

This is a wonderful idea and an excellent alternative to Growl notifications.

That having been said however -

Upon launching the program, it tried to connect to about seven different Amazon.com sites. I am not certain what information it tried to upload or download. The documentation makes no mention whatsoever of any connection with any commercial company. Thankfully, Little Snitch prevented it from connecting without my approval.

That little stunt has earned this application a fast trip to the Trash.

Birthday Bar does, indeed, connect to the internet periodically for two reasons:

First: the software will check to see if a new version is available by hitting shoofile.com once per week.

Second: the software will check the various amazon.com properties and present the user with an opportunity to go directly to that contact's wish list.

Each of these features can be turned off in the preferences by deselecting "Check for Birthday Bar updates" and "Check for Wish Lists" respectively.

I will update the documentation to address this issue in the next version.

Kudos to you for making just the kind of app I need! One thing I would like to see is an option to drag the bar anywhere on the screen. As it is now, the top and bottom left side of my screen is usually covered with an open window. Otherwise an excellent program!
