32 Bits Intel Mac Users, beware that since QGIS 1.7 the binary package is 64 bits compatible only, so much for the open source spirit...!

It seems the GDAL upgrade from 1.9 to 1.10 changed the way CSV files are handled so that I now have a non-functioning QGIS. App hangs trying to import csv data file when previously had no problems with this and other csv text files.

I have deleted all data files, all files in the hidden .QGIS folder, all prefs and caches etc yet the app continuously tries to load the problematic file that I have deleted. Even replacing the bad file with another CSV file that works in another project fails to prevent the hang.

So now I have to recreate the project with customised colour schemes and 100s of hours of devt over the last 6 months while QGIS was stable.

User beware! GDAL 1.10 may result in catastrophic failure of your QGIS projects

Excellent GIS application with ever-expanding functionality through Python plugins. Far easier to use than ArcGIS.

Occasional stability problems in the past seem to have disappeared with v 1.8, and even the 2.0-dev versions seem to work perfectly.

still no go after several hours of deleting everything I possibly can. none of the installers have built-in uninstallers, so its a matter of digging around Sys/Lib and ~/Lib folders and files to extract various installs etc

always crashes on startup

QGIS web pages and forums not particulalry useful to novice user- there is an assumption of a certain level of technical expertise to trouble-shoot any problems with QGIS

multiple re-installs later (even 1.7) still crashing on startup. Hundreds of hours of work, mapping now inaccessible.

this is insanity

Major PITA on Mt Lion, crashes on EVERY startup:

Exception Type: EXC_BAD_ACCESS (SIGSEGV)
Exception Codes: KERN_INVALID_ADDRESS at 0x0000000000000000

how I wish there was a simple way to read/understand crash logs!

all assoc libraries and frameworks updated to current versions etc and now the trouble-shooting begins...

Running QGIS 1.8 after loading various libraries as required.
Taking 2 minutes from clicking on icon to having application running on MBA mid-2012 with 128G SDD and 8GB RAM.

Lots of log entries for unresolved DYLD issues:

2/08/12 1:23:10.000 PM kernel[0]: QGIS (map: 0xffffff80336e6308) triggered DYLD shared region unnest for map: 0xffffff80336e6308, region 0x7fff94200000->0x7fff94400000. While not abnormal for debuggers, this increases system memory footprint until the target exits.

Also repeated calls for SIMBL:

2/08/12 1:20:59.599 PM QGIS[1086]: Performance: Please update this scripting addition to supply a value for ThreadSafe for each event handler: "/Library/ScriptingAdditions/SIMBL.osax"

running 10.8 so I guess some of the slow startup is due to calls to SIMBL, but 2 minutes does seem a long time..

would have preferred to log bug report on dev web pages but wasn't interested in establishing user acct and more, so posted here. Happy to contribute to any trouble-shooting that might solve this for me.

Since version 1.7 it's a nightmare, now an open project is limited to 64 bits computer and it crashes like crazy!

Rarely ever crashes on me. Make sure your kyngchaos.com frameworks are updated first, before installing a new version of QGIS. If you want the 32-bit version, you can follow the Mac build notes included in source and compile it yourself. 64-bit helps considerably when working with large rasters, especially since the underlying library (gdal) does not support multi-CPUs for many operations.

Tried under Lion - same as SL - crashed at startup. Never saw a splash screen if there is one! Have contacted developers offering to troubleshoot but never heard anything/

Hey Jack - thanks but still no go - I guess I am missing one or more libraries that are need by QGIS? I can't find anything in the ReadMe files as to the specific libraries etc I need to load to run QGIS. The ReadMe seems to assume that you know all this and that you have a running version of the app. I can't even get that far! Immediate crash as soon as I double click the icon. Any help appreciated as I am keen to work on my data sets!

Hi

Go there : http://www.kyngchaos.com/software/qgis

It is the developer page of the QGIS Mac version.

You are probably missing GDAL and GSL frameworks

"Requirements:
GDAL Complete 1.8 framework package
GSL framework
"

thanks for the headsup Jack- the official QGIS ReadMe didn't have these necessary details!
Will load up and see if I can get this puppy to run.
thanks again

I have to agree the frameworks should be bundled next to the application to have everything ready to work. And it also should be mentioned in the Read Me file.
