CrossWire for Mac1.0

17 September 2007

LimeWire/Gnutella client.

What is CrossWire for Mac

CrossWire is a LimeWire/Gnutella client for Mac OS X. It aims to be a perfect combination between performance, stability, compatibility, usability and price when it comes to a File Sharing client. As a result, CrossWire shares some killer features like the rest, and some that the others don't have.

What's new in CrossWire

Version 1.0:
  • Interface Tweaks
  • Improved Filter
  • Performance Improvements
  • Minor Code Cleanup
  • A fix for the intermittent crashes is now available for 1.0 and all beta versions, included in the 1.0 package
Try our new feature and write a detailed review about CrossWire. All reviews will be posted soon.

Still works beautifully under 10.5.2 Intel. Very moderate CPU load.

The code base of this application is unable to be ported to newer releases of the RB Compiler, meaning it can not be adapted to run on Intel or even take advantage of the velocity engines in G4 or G5 microprocessors, that coupled with lack of development time or resources means unfortunately the development of this application will be halted. In response to ghostwriter's reply regarding servers, the link WAS fixed but was later broken again due to server issues.

Download link fixed. Unfortunately the app is somewhat of a black hole at the core and the attempts to resolve bugs aren't going well. Development is not dead though, I assure that.

Link seems to be broken. Checking out the directory contents after following the 'more information' link yields a file named cw10.zip.old. Is this safe to use, or is there a correct download listed somewhere else?

Thank God. Finally a nice looking gnutella client (that isn't Acquisition, and is free). Now if only the stability issues could be solved it'd easily be a 5 star app.

It seems to be a compiler issue as it compiles fine under an older version of the compiler. However the older one only compiles for PowerPC, not Intel. May need to wait for a compiler update.

1.0 has run more efficiently and more stable on our test machines, and has a few last minute changes to improve it a little. Source Code has been posted on the CrossWire site.

Last post for the night (1:36 AM here)... so here's a quoted text for all to read: Currently the core is migrated to a more Acquisition style (Frostwire/Limewire) system which we plan to have fully operational with Xcode by 1.0. The UI will be receiving a major lift if all goes according to plan. Both visual and code wise. Connection code, controllers, graphics, etc will be rewritten in progression. 2 builds we have compiled, "2G96" which is the Cabos based majorly used version, and "6G72" which is a more internal code-from-scratch version. 2696 will be made fully open sourced ASAP, but 6G72 will remain closed due to it's very low/no dependence on Cabos code or architectures. Both have the same UI, but may change during development.

Ok, verdict is that we're going to add some code here and there to 1.0, then all source will be released. I've taken my own time into the source (being a bit of a programmer myself, although mostly a business manager) to add the Cabos links back in, including bundling versions of the CW Use License and GPL inside the application, accessible from the Apple Menu.

Does the developer forget to keep the open source software? The developer must put CrossWire's source code on the web. Because CrossWire is based on "Cabos" ( http://cabos.sourceforge.jp/ ).

I'm working on CrossWire 1.0 Final now. A lot of work has been done to the core in the upcoming build, along with some UI refinements, a new search system and progress made toward recoding the Preferences Panel. One thing I noticed is that a lot of crash reports make reference to "Application Enhancer". If you are using this, click "Application Enhancer" in System Preferences, then the "Master Exclude List" tab, and add CrossWire to this list. If possible, send feedback via the Bug Reporter to any notable stability improvements, etc. Thanks.

If you could send the Crash logs to imac600x@gmail.com that would be great. I haven't had any other issues reported with startup errors (at least in 1.0b3) so the logs could help pinpoint the issue.

It still crashes on startup. Do you have a PowerPC version that will work on my iMac G4. I have Beta tested software for years and 98% would at least open before crashing. I hope you figure out the problem, I know how hard it is to code with Xcode, I did it without a book to help. If you want I can send you the crash log.

An integrated search field into the toolbar would be nicer than an external window with a search field. It just doesn't make sense not to.

Pleased to announce that as soon as Public Beta 3 is up and on MacUpdate, which should be by the time you read this, you will have a Intel/PPC Universal Binary. That's right, it WORKS UNIVERSALLY, FINALLY.

It's coded on PowerPC based Macs to start with. We have a cross compiler to Intel, but it's not working at the moment due to a corrupted Dylib error, which I explain in an earlier review. Unfortunately the compiler update is $299 (money we don't have), so we're trying to repair the current one. Some bug reports have come in, and i'll be looking into those ASAP.

Seem to be working fine with the beta 2 (on MBP, 10.4.10). A little slow to open (but not maddening so) which is normal given the fact it runs via Rosetta on the Mac Intel. Other than that is quite good.

Cheers for the feedback regarding Intel processors... but this is kind of shocking. I'll forward it on to one of the other developers who takes care of the Intel side of things and hopefully release a working Intel Public Beta 2. Thanks!

Trying to open this app (MBP C2D, 10.4.10) gives me the following message: "Library not loaded: @executable_path/rbframework.dylib Referenced from: /Users/jancheta/Desktop/CrossWire.app/Contents/MacOS/CrossWire Reason: no suitable image found. Did find: /Users/jancheta/Desktop/CrossWire.app/Contents/MacOS/rbframework.dylib: mach-o, but wrong architecture /Users/jancheta/Desktop/CrossWire.app/Contents/MacOS/rbframework.dylib: mach-o, but wrong architecture" Wrong architecture, eh? I guess he has some issues with building universal binary apps.

I too have a 17" MBP 2.33.Ghz running 10.4.10 and it will not launch. The developer states that he has not tested it on recent versions of Tiger; but this is a waste of our time.
