Text2cal... So, you get all these emails about events, and you want them to go into iCal, but it is pretty annoying because you can't remember everything about them at once and have to go back and forth copying and pasting a few times between the programs. This is where text2cal comes in - it is a service that allows you to grab all the text at once from your email, select the important times and dates from that grabbed text, and insert the result directly into iCal. It also makes guesses about the times and dates to make it even easier! (currently compatible only with US dates

Awesome. So useful and nice and quick - once i figured out how to use the keyboard shortcuts - was trying to copy and paste, but Cmd-C was taken, etc etc - but now I get it and like it!

Thanks for the review, here's some info -
1. You can get text from the notes field by selecting it and hitting the hot-key of the associated field (command-L for the label, command-R for location). It would be nice to be draggable, maybe i will add that in the future.

2. It should work with any selected text from a program that supports apple's text services - this includes safari, for me at least (10.4). I haven't tested this extensively, maybe there are some ways a webpage can be displayed that make it not work. I have only tried it in gmail, where it works.

3. Yeah the location guessing is pretty rudimentary now, mostly it likes Room, Location, Where, Place, followed by the location on that line or the next.

Sorry about the hot-key changing, its pretty tricky (and finicky). However, I was just emailed about Service Scrubber which looks like it manages your services for you - maybe this is the way to go.

It should work just as well in the locations you specified - people like those better? I will change the link.

This is a brilliant idea and was something I had in mind to write myself! Glad someone else did it, thanks.

The good: Does a nice job at what it claims to do (though could be improved, see below), guessing times like "5-ish" correctly as 5pm even; Good interface; last used calendar is used as default; free!

Needs improvement:

1. text in the notes field in the popup window can't be selected and dragged or even copy & pasted onto fields. This is important for instance to set label and location for instance. The term "label" is not helpful; even though that's what Apple calls it, I think people think of it as "name" or "title".

2. should work with any selectable text, not just email. I tried with MS Entourage and was happy to find it worked, but it doesn't show up in Safari.

3. one way to guess location would be by looking for an address, as in ####text

Not-working: changing hot key as described. When changed, new key equiv. does not appear in menu nor does it work when pressed. Perhaps logout is necessary but nothing else I tried (killall, run restart services, quit & relaunch apps) seems to work. The default hot-key conflicts with Translate service, which is a widely used Service. Would be nice to be able to specify this preference anyway without resort to a plist editor. also makes upgrade difficult.

The strange: installation location. Why /Library/Application Support/ and not /Library/Services or ~/Library/Services/ ?
