The Filter2.4.5

20 December 2007

Uses your music to create interesting playlists.

Overview

The Filter is a neat, free piece of software that helps you build fantastic playlists from the music stored on your Mac. It's like a musical assistant who knows exactly which songs will fit together and which songs won't.

To build a playlist you open up iTunes and let The Filter analyse your library. You then click on 'Create a Playlist' to generate one based on your choice of artist or song. The music in the playlist comes from the music in your collection - it is a great way of rediscovering music you forgot you had!

Additional Features:

  • Create playlists of any length that match your mood.
  • Update your iPod with automatically refreshing playlists
  • Get personal music recommendations from the iTunes Store
  • Share your music tastes on Facebook and MySpace
  • Read information and reviews on the artists you are listening to.

Makes pretty good playlists in iTunes a lot quicker than I would do myself - so saves time. Great free app, hands down the best iTunes plug-in I've used thus far. There are a few bugs in the software, but I've been an Alpha tester and seen how far its come, so I'm sure they'll all get squashed soon.

Nice software but it needs more options. It picks the same artist too many times in a random selection. You should have the option to never pick the same artist twice. I've built playlist with 50 songs but only 15 unique artists. I doesn't seem to want to give me more variety than that.

Any reason why it's taking up 50-70% of my CPU? This is not just while starting up or scanning. I had it build a playlist and it's been playing for over 1/2 an hour. It seems to work great otherwise. [Powerbook G4, 2Gb ram, OS 10.4.10]

Works nicely BUT I don't think the playlists it creates are very useful - basing it on 2 Big Black and one Dub Syndicate it generated a playlist that included the themes to Wacky Racers and Trumpton!

Have been waiting a while for this and to be honest I'm really happy with it (wish I could have been an alpha tester though). No sour grapes however. One thing I am keen to see is how this fares as a mobile app - any one tried it yet?
