Semulov lists all mounted volumes in your menubar, categorized by type. Clicking on a volume menu will unmount/eject that volume. Semulov also supports Growl unmount and mount notifications.
What’s new in version 2.6
Updated on May 30 2021
Version 2.6:
Fix Eject All keyboard shortcut not working
Fix menubar button not highlighting correctly in newer macOS versions
The most useful thing about Semulov to me is probably the menu bar indicator showing you how many external drives or volumes are mounted at present.
And the most unreliable and disappointing feature I find is the unmount/eject function. We're at 10.12.5 now and the OS takes its sweet time before 'releasing' a mounted volume/drive.
The problem with Semulov is that it errors out too quickly. Most of the time it works the second time around.
The big question is then: why can't Semulov be a little more patient and try again after x seconds ignoring errors meanwhile? Even Applescript has routines for that. Seems to me, this can be fixed.
Thank you for this useful app, and thanks for the maintenance update (2.1). I was seeing some crashes under 10.10.5, and I presume this update fixes that.
If it is possible to suppress the alert that the startup disk wasn't unmounted when doing Eject All, that would improve the app.
On 10.9.5, no problem.
it's really useful when you've got a lot partitions and don't want them mounted all the time.
I use it in combination with TinkerTool System, which can easily prohibits partitions for mounting at login. In that way, I mount them only when I need.
Thanks for this little but useful app! :-)
I really liked this app, a lot. But it's become a pain to use with 10.10.x.
Most of the time it reports some obscure unmount failure and (regardless of the error message) gives results like the lottery: sometimes it will unmount a volume, sometimes it won't.
It seems to have issues with encrypted volumes/drives. And when you create an encrypted volume/drive they will sometimes appear twice in the list, in the mounted section and in the unmounted section.
You better check again (in the Finder) if your (encrypted) volume/drive has actually been unmounted before disconnecting some device. It almost ruined an encrypted TimeMachine volume for me because I trusted Semulov showing it as unmounted when in fact it was still mounted when I disconnected the drive.
In short: I really loved Semulov but it's unreliable now with 10.10.x. The developer may have abandoned it because I haven't heard back from him at all. Time to move on, I guess.
Version 2.0 seems to have some problems with 10.10. Sometimes it shows 'Failed to unmount' messages for no obvious reason (even after the drive has already been ejected), at other times it will show the same volume as mounted and under the unmounted section.
So basically, it works but has some quirks when running on 10.10 that become a bit more annoying with time. I hope the next update will resolve this.
That being said, it's still a great and helpful piece of software I recommend.
Dear Kainjow,
Thank you for your reply. I'm sorry for beginning my comment "for free" when what I really meant was that Disk Utility has its own built-in volume unmount application which some people maybe unaware. However, when one creates a comment or review on Macupdate, at least as far as I'm aware, it can't be later edited/altered.
My apologies for my careless thread.
Or for free you can :
1/ Open Disk Utility,
2/ Choose the volume or disk you wish to unmount from the left index,
3/ Right Click on the icon you wish to unmount,
4/ Scroll down to 'Unmount' and click.
And that's it! Works on all volumes including Mavericks.
Should you wish to remount that volume, just do the same thing again and Right Click on the shown volume and click 'Mount'.
Works great for applications like Disk Warrior, Drive Genius etc.
Indispensable app if you've got plenty of disks and partitions! I use it in combination with the fstab file (set to prohibit my partitions from mounting at login), so when I need one, Semulov is at hand. :-)
Have been using Ejector for a couple of years, but wanted an alternative with support for my retina display. Semulov proved to be that and more. (I also tried unDock, but didn't like it at all). Highly recommended!
Had a problem recently with ejecting external discs. Had to resort to opening Disc Utility just to eject anything. But this little app solved all those problems.
I was excited to use this plug-in but sadly, it does not work.
It does a good job showing and hiding the external drive in the Finder but does not actually "unmount" it.
Even after Ejecting it, the disk keeps spinning until I go in Disk Utility and eject it.
INFO:
Used it on iMax 27" w/ 10.8.3
Is it possible that the latest version 1.6 ignores its own growl notifications setting? I get Growl notifications all the time even though I have disabled this in the Semulov's preferences/settings.
Also, when I choose 'show unmounted volumes', could you maybe make the Recovery HD and Boot OS X volumes (created on Filevault 2 volumes) disappear? Or at least an option in the settings for that?
Thank you. Keep up the good work.
Useful app: I have 3 external disks I would like to have attached, but not monted. Semulov makes this easy, mount and unmount them when needed.
I have the feeling there is a small but, though: after running Semulov, and after, firewire disks are not mounted and, from that moment on, with Semulov running or not, they are not mounted any more. Am in ML 10.8.2. The workaround seems to be simple: to replace FW connection by USB connection.
"Semulov displays mounted volumes in the menu bar instead of cluttering your Desktop" - this is the quote from Kainjow web site.
It is not the fact. After installing "Semulov" and running it, I still can see my external mounted volumes and they still clutter my Desktop.
It seems to me this is the app for ejecting the mounted volumes only!
Semulov makes it easy to disengage my partitioned external drive in one swell foop. My only complaint is that on a few occasions, after I have used it to eject everything, it has crashed. Not a big problem, since I've often had to reboot anyway before the next time I need it.
