Word processor that behaves like a typewriter.

Overview

Writer.app is a simple word processor. It's designed to get your first draft banged out and on its way to the editing table. Which is a prefect complement to NaNoWriMo, if you're into that sort of thing. So get writing. Well, download it first. Then get started. Make sure you have your coffee or tea made already, so you have no more excuses.

What's new in Writer

Version 1.4.3:
  • A few cosmetic changes to toolbar icons
  • Pressing delete twice in a row will delete the previous word (which could just be the full stop, or other punctuation mark)

This does exactly what it the developer says it does: switches off all distractions, gives you a text window, and effectively disables your delete key (you can only strike-through mistakes). Your Mac becomes a typewriter (with sounds if you so choose). You can allow more regular style text editing via the preferences, so, if a disabled delete key freaks you out then you can enable it again. I love the idea of this app and am eager to see how it will be developed. What stops me from using it as a writing environment full-time is the fact that it cannot open files (even files saved in its own format). I type a page, save it as a Writer.app file, then try to open it again, and all I get is a blank page. The same is true of an RTF file. Writer.app can export as an RTF, but cannot open the file properly so I can continue where I left off in my last writing session. The strange thing is, if I open the Writer.app file format in TextMate what I've written is there. As a professional writer, my biggest fear is loosing my work because an app hasn't saved it properly. Until Writer.app can save and recover work properly, I cannot use it. I sincerely like the simplicity this app offers. I've spent money on "novel writing apps" with lots of functions that tell you how to organise your work (like I can't do that anyway). The only thing that helps the writing process is simplicity, which is exactly what Writer.app (or at least the idea behind it) offers. Solve the issues with saving files (perhaps even adding an auto-save and backing up function) and I'd be happy to start using Writer.app for my work.

It's a really sweet app, simple and very usable. One problem, though, for me is whenever I launch it, I lose my internet connection...every time, even if I've set Writer's connection setting at "unblock". Dunno to what extent the router that my Mac is connected to may be at fault, if at all....it IS a bit tempermental, admittedly. But the only way I can, then, reconnect, after closing Writer is to restart my Mac. By the way, I LOVE Writer's icon. It's absolutely elegant.....I can gaze at its magnificence all day! Um, I guess that could be a problem for some easily distracted writers, though.

Hmm. I wouldn't blame your router. Do you have a network location called Writer-BlockNetwork? If so, you can remove that (or simply rename it), and simply click the "Get Writing" or "Never Tell Me About This Again" button when you launch the app the next time. That should sort things out. If it doesn't, drop me an email at support at supertart.com and I can try to see what else might be up.

Ok, I deleted Writer-BlockNetwork from Locations and voila!, no more lost internet connection. Thanks for your assistance! Actually, the Block Network feature is one that I really have no need for.

Excellent, I'm glad that helped. The Block Network feature is for the people with a *real* problem procrastinating. : )

You liked the old pic of the top of my desk with some papers and some badly drawn text over the lot better than the current icon?

Funny little thing, not that I'll have much use of it, but anyway. Would like the annoying sound to be multichannel, asynchronous, or whatever - ie to sound for every keystroke (stroking as well), or at least, have the characters to be messed up, like on a real thing, if I type to fast..

Hmm... I'll have to look into that opening files problem... I haven't seen anything along those lines, but I also haven't been able to touch it for a few months now. I'll look into it and get back to you about that.

Try out the latest (1.2.5). This should fix the issue with being unable to reopen saved documents. Sorry about that... it was mentioned in the release notes (that it was only broken through the Open Recent... menu), but I'd buried it a bit low down. At any rate, it's fixed now...
