I hope it is as good as it appears. A bit hard to understand the features without more documentation. Wanting to know how to update B with A without deleting anything in B, just adding anything new, and updating anything newer.

SyncTwoFolders is a simple, nifty little app that does what it says: synchronizes the files in two folders. It is more or less self-documenting from within the app. You have to experiment with the options a bit to make sure it's doing what you want it to do. There is a "Simulation" mode which will show you the results of a sync without actually changing anything. This is shareware. The author (see his comment below from 2/19/20) seems like a nice guy. Please support him. -SB

I've been using it on OSX for years. It does what it has to do and does it well. There are many options for syncing folders both to external drives and to network places. EXCELLENT ! and to recommend.

Looks like a solid, reliable app. I have been using it for syncing the internal drive with the external drives planned for backup. My preferred backup is ‘source replaces target’, in order to avoid further complications. I would have welcomed sys backup too, something like iBackup (grapefruit.ch) in its glorious days.

This a fairly nice app, but the app's website says you need the "Zx_External" in the same folder in order to sync things. But you can't download the "Zx_External"! It pops up a login dialogue box requesting a user name and password to download. Or am I missing something?

Does not work well with 10.14.3. Copies but can't see the time line as the spinning rainbow of death is constantly on. When I came back the computer was asleep and I had to shut down the app to see what was going on so it does not alert when finished. You have to run another simulation.

Will the APP work for keeping two Directories/Folders in sync? I have my photos in one Directories/Folders that is on a drive with a large structure of photos with dated Directories/Folders. What I want is like a back up of a copy of the 2 that are identical to each other. Will this do the trick? Thanks

This has been my go to app for years, but as another mentioned, now it simply does not work: High Sierra. I've sent donations to the author, as his work is appreciated. I can only hope he continues to maintain this fine program? IF he does, I'll send him another $5.00. If more people did, the incentive might mean a 2.3 version update, continuing the legacy. My personal thanks one way or the other.

A little oversight in SyncTwoFolders: it doesn't check inside packages, so if the dates of the packages are the same but the contents have changed it won't sync them (it happens in Scrivener's files and probably others...)

I've just tried SyncTwoFolders in a very specific situation where I had problems with other utilities (free and not): syncing a folder with another one located in a Boxcryptor encrypted folder inside Dropbox folder. Believe it or not, it's the only one I've tried that doesn't make Boxcryptor crash, give errors due to file names or else! It won't be my work horse, but for that kind of situation, I've adopted it! :-)

I think this app looks great & I'll be happy to donate (I'd love to set it to work every evening automatically too) but it's a bit confusing - what do the little symbols & colours mean when i run the simulation - how can i tell what will happen if there is no key to explain?

Very interested in this app, but I have a question; I want to synchronise my iTunes music folder on my external drive to another drive. Thing is I already copied it some time ago, but have since added another 100gb of data. Which option should I choose so that they are in sync and no matched data is copied, just what is new or different? Thanks

Works really well and the UI is very clear. One update which would be nice is to have the ability to authenticate and run privileged mode to allow copying of more than one's own files. (If I missed an option here, I apologize.) I suspect I could change the internal executable to suid, but I have not tried that. On the other hand I would not ALWAYS want it running in privileged mode either.

I love this app and use it for many years (donated my share). I have two Macs that I used to partially sync (certain folders). Unfortunately it doesn't work for me with version 2.0.8 on Yosemite (10.10.3). It starts and then freezes - the spin ball of death appears and the application must be forced quit. Anyone encountered this issue and might have a solution for that ? I give 4 stars since its a good application at the end of the day.

I needed an app to do one thing and do it well - sync the content of two folders together. From the title of this app, it seemed that this would do the trick, and sure enough, it does. I like that it has a simulation mode, so that you can test before commiting to the setup that's made before going live with a sync.. Once you're satisfied, you can go "live" and sync away. On the author's page, they accept donations (everyone's got to eat), so I plan to support this good app with my $.

Using 2.0.3 and updating my earlier review. This is a very valuable program and now i use it fairly regularly. Does what it says. One suggestion to the developer - there is a green and a red icon (+ and -) next to 'Choose Folder'. These seem to be just gifs and no action triggers on clicking them. I had initially thought that clicking this will add the current settings to the batch window. I later figured out that the + symbol next to 'Last Settings' is the one to click for this. You may want to consider updating the GUI to avoid this possible confusion. Otherwise this is a very good piece of software. Thanks to the developer.

I don't understand the difference between a "dot plus" and a "#+". Can you please explain? I've synced one folder to complete the other and I have many of both results. I've checked both and the files exist in both locations. Also, when completing the target it'll add files from the source but it won't delete items from the target if they are not in the source, correct?

Very nice. I've been looking for a better sync app for a long time. This meets my needs nicely and works well. It appears to be a front-end for Finder copies, but that's ok by me. The copies are faster than so many other sync/backup apps out there that are just front-ends for rsync (which I find is always slow at transfers.) I mainly use this type of app for large, video file transfers. No excessive CPU or RAM usage I could see. Couple little niggles: the app goes into a non-responsive state during copies. It comes back alive once the copy is done. Also, not 64-bit. Glad to have found it. I needed a replacement for Synkron, which is becoming increasingly unusable. I'll be donating to the developer!

This has worked well to fill a simple need I have to "sync two folders". I have been running this several times a week for the last two months. It has been reliable and stable. The interface does use a fair number of symbols. You will need to read the doc to understand the meaning of those. I reduced my rating for Ease of Use for that reason. Still, compared to something like rsync or even some other front ends for rsync, it is easier to set-up, run a sync, and understand what happened. Not quite as easy or pretty as some of the $20-$40 commercial applications that offer this capability along with some others, but an outstanding value as a FREE application for a targeted task. Many thanks to the developer for making this available.

I appreciate the work the dev has put into it and for backing up or merging two folders it is a great tool, but for me it is not a real two-way-sync that syncs two folders. I just want to sync a folder on my USB and a folder on my mac. Which I thought this app should accomplish from the name and describtion. But when I delete or move something in one folder, it does not delete it in the other folder but rather create it again (in "reciprocal" mode). I guess "source replaces target" mode would do, but than I lose all the changes in one folder if both have been changed. So it does not really sync two folders but rather back up one folder... Or am I missing something? In any case, if you are just looking for that, great tool.

A great app that has always worked flawlessly for me between Macs through my home AirPort Extreme network. As some have pointed out, SyncTwoFolders is not an auto-syncing app — it’s strictly on-demand. But despite some whining by one or two commenters here, the developer's description does not characterize it as an autosyncer. And since it’s free (thanks, BTW), it’s easy enough to test whether it meets your needs, so there’s no reason to bash the dev if you discover it doesn’t.

Maybe I'm missing something, but this program is pointless unless the sync is auotmatic (like Dropbox is, for example). As far as I can tell, you have to manually open the program and sync the file for changes to register. That's pointless. I can just use Finder to copy a folder to do that. A "syncing program" should keep the folder up-to-date automatically. Maybe I've missed a feature...the lack of Help in the app might account for that...

SyncTwoFolders calls Finder to perform the file manipulating task, thus the performance is poor when syncing over shared volume. And the UI design is quite confusion. I can find no way to change the sync method (replace source, replace destination, skip, sync-delete) for individual file. I'm not given any option but accept the "Simulation" result for each item. And sometimes it failed to copy / delete files on the shared volume, and it just stops and shows the error counts, without any detailed information.

Really helpful app for keeping files and folders in sync. Easy to use and very unobtrusive in my opinion. And I like it that I can choose e.g. between a simple update where previous versions are being kept or a replacement-sync that gives me just the latest version of files with no clutter in the target folder! Regularly updated by the author so give thanks if u appreciate it, too!

This app uses Finder to copy files so don't be surprised when you see multiple Finder "Copy" process' taking place. You need to familiarize yourself with the settings to insure that the end result is what you intended, the same as any other synch/backup application. If you are unsure read the FAQ and run a "Simulation" first. Once you do that this app does an excellent job! Be sure to download the proper version for your Mac (Intel - PowerPC) and drop by the developers site to make a donation.

This doesn't seem to work for me. It tries to sync folders/files over and over again even thought they are exactly the same (I have checked their MD5 sums to make sure) and the date and times are identical. Maybe this has to do with the folder I am copying it to being FAT instead of the Mac filesystem which I am copying it from?

Re IAMDORIAN: It's a legitimate question, the author has a PPC version that was not where it was indicated to be. You are awfully judgmental to suggest the poster work more to buy a new Mac when there are people who can barely keep a roof over their head or food on the table. Perhaps you should take time to assess the situation and think about the fact that not everyone's life is like yours before you jump on your high horse and put someone else down just for asking a simple question. Judge not lest ye be judged.

The old adage 'you get what you pay for' is usually correct. So when you come across a FREE app, you should normally be quite wary. Not so in this case!! I have tried many different backup/syncing apps to keep a usable backup (not an archived/incremental backup but something I can work on with my Laptop while my Desktop was otherwise busy) on my network drive of my work files and none matched the ease of use of SyncTwoFolders. Obviously, none matched it's price either! I don't know how it can be given away for free and I initially thought that it it was an old app that was no longer being developed or supported. That was until I needed support and was instantly given it. Regular updates adding some great new features rivalling the most expensive options out there proved my initial scepticism wrong again - and I was glad to be proved wrong in this case! We have total synchronisation, adding the target's files to the source folder or adding the source folder's files to the target. Automatic deletion of files based on their name or starting characters (which is ideal for not dumping multiple invisible files on the Mac onto a PC disk) and there's even a Batch option where you can carry out multiple syncs all at once. As if that wasn't enough, in the current version (1.3.5b3) there's even a timer that you can set for the Batch syncing periodically without the need to manually fiddle anymore. The only thing it's missing (which are really little things) is a progress bar to see how long it's going to take (although you do have the finder copy window for progress), Growl support and Sparkle (for automatic updating from within the app instead of downloading a new copy and then replacing it manually). I love this app - mostly because the compromises you'd normally make in your expectations to use a free app don't apply here whatsoever! I'm sure I'm not the only person who'd gladly pay for this app if it weren't free. Thank you Robisson!

Amazing piece of software. Very useful to sync since the pen-drive files to a complete home folder. I am glad it's free; the developer is a gentle and a very accessible person. I hope it keeps evolving .. Congrats.

This is a reply to TOM.25. I can't figure out how reply directly to him. I can guarantee the files are identical. They were copies made just minutes before I tested SynchTwoFolders. My remarks about the language weren't meant to criticize your English, and I appreciate your effort to translate. However, for me, a native English speaker, some of the language was very awkwardly worded. "Source up Target" would be a good example. I've read the tool tip half a dozen times and I'm still not sure exactly what "Source up Target" means. I think it means that the target folder will be updated with all new and modified files, but no files will be deleted. But it's not clear. The speed of the program was fine. Again, thanks for your efforts. I hope you continue to update SynchTwoFolders for those of us with PPC Macs. p.s. I can provide you with specifics if you want, but I'm not sure how to get you my email address.

Following is my brief experience with SynchTwoFolders. Please note that I'm using the PPC version. I love the idea of this program. So I downloaded it and ran a test. I made a copy of my work folder, then added one file and modified another in the original folder. I then ran a simulated synch, using the original folder as the "source." SynchTwoFolders correctly identified the two files that needed to replaced. However, it also identified four other files as needing to be replaced for reasons I don't understand. The identified files are identical in creation and modification dates, and haven't even been opened in several years. This is obviously not acceptable. Also, I don't know if the devlopers are native English speakers, but the language they use is confusing to put it mildly. Finally, the results window is very hard to read. So my search for a simple, cheap program that will reliably synch two folders goes on.

"Where's the PPC version?" What kind of comment is this? Here's a developer who is selfless enough spend his time writing and then constantly improving a very useful FREE software application, and you cannot understand why he does not continue a parallel development for an old hardware platform? Just a suggestion, but perhaps you might spend YOUR "spare" time working to buy a new Mac, or provide the developer with yours services (for free), so that he has the "spare" time to re-compile this program for others. A hearty thanks to the developer for this work. :::tipping my hat to you:::

I was looking for a simple folder synchronizer this afternoon, and this one showed up as a new update in today's MacUpdate. I immediately download it and fire up the app, it worked as advertised. Very useful if you look for a simple folder merger to sync two folders mixed with both new and old downloads.

Is that the "Guardian of Forever" From Star Trek on the icon? If so very appropriate for this great, simple backup tool.

Wow, this was a pleasant surprise. It seems to work quite well! Only suggestion would be to have a progress bar so I can see how close to done it is.

Finally something to help me clean up my similar backup folders (with thousands of files) from the past (in which I sometimes accidentally stored newer files. On my powermac dual G4 it worked fine. The log is clear and to use the the option or command button to find the original file a great help. I would like more clarity about the special signs defining the transfer state in the log though, even the tooltip info is too "thin". great, I finally got a job done which had been laying around for years.

Both of the links above download the Intel version only. You need to go to the Developer's site for the PPC version.

The only thing I don't like about this app is the icon. Man, that's just ugly. It does work great though, and I haven't had any problems. SyncTwoFolders makes a great, simple backup system, for free.

This application has great potential but unfortunately it hangs every time after it synchronises and I have to force quit to exit. This also means my settings don't save.

I am using this program SyncTwoFolders 1.1.4 on a PowerBook G4 10.4.8. Looks like a good program, but after I set it up and it begins to Syncronize for the second time, Finder Windows begin popping up all over the screen the entire time it is running. Even when the program is in the background or hidden the screen is constantly flashing Finder Windows. It appears that the program is opening and closing every Finder Window it is looking in to Syncronize. Would love to see this fixed.

Hatz off to the developer. Works great! A very useful utility of the sort that Apple s-h-o-u-l-d include in Leopard. Is anyone out there listening?? Thanks for supporting the Macintosh community.

Absofreakinlutely fandamntastic, thank-you! I give it only four stars for ease of use (at this point) simply because, IMO, instructions for use should be included in a read-me file for reference, rather than users having to rely on tool tips. Functionally, it's performed perfectly here.
