Letter Opener extracts attachments from winmail.dat files (was OMiC). When using Apple Mail, if you've ever received an e-mail that included an attachment called winmail.dat, you know the frustration of not knowing what was sent to you. When this comes from an employer or client, it's even more frustrating. That winmail.dat file may only be the rich text format or it could contain an important graphic, calendar entry or invitation, task, address book contact, Microsoft Outlook Note, or nested messages. In those cases, you may miss important communications.

I don' know why it just open some of my winmail files. There are totally 13 winmail.dat attachmens on my Mac Mavericks and 4 of them are fail to read. So I search and download another one - Winamil Viewer from Mac App Store. It helped me open all my cryptic winmail files. Your letter opener let me down.

Good product, absolutely NO support. Tried to e-mail them about 12 times about a billing issue, and got STRICTLY NO answer. Not even a comment saying they couldn't help. I think a good software developer/publisher should not only write good apps, but should answer his mail too, and try to help (paying!) customers. No kudos.

The function Letter Opener offers is a nice one, but the price tag is questionable from my view. I owned LO as it was beta and called OMiC to some version of LO later (10 licenses or so...). However, to pay upgrade fees for every adaptation was expensive. I understand the viewpoint of the developer (see his comments to other users below) and I appreciate that he offers lifetime licenses now (it wasn't available when I dropped LO in the past as far as I remember). Anyway, whether or not LO is worth its price is something every user has to decide him/herself.

Just be aware there are alternatives (as mentioned in the "Similar Software" area above and some comments below) and even some email clients with a built in functionality similar to LO. I for example have switched to MailMate two and a half years ago. MailMate did have a price of $ 25 until lately but now $ 50 for different reasons (you may read about it on its developer page) and offers so much more functionality as LO and Mail.app together.

There is also Letter Opener Lite with a more favourable price then Letter Opener Pro.

True, Christopher. However, the lite version is an app without Mail integration (like "Klammer" [which opens MSG and OFT, too] or similar apps) and not an plugin like the the pro version. That makes a difference because (1) that is less convenient and (2) then it needs to be considered that just for opening winmail.dat files there is TNEFs Enough as free alternative as well.

Don't get me wrong, I don't deny that LO and even LO lite have their benefits. I also understand that you need to adjust the plugin when Mail or OS X makes changes but other developer do the same without charging an upgrade fee that often or asking to buy a life time license for 75% markup. It is all about if the user believes it is worth the price.

Just did an upgrade to 10.9.0 and promptly installed 6.0.1 of letter opener. Mail keeps on hanging requiring a force quit. Removed the extension and all good.

Everytime you access an email that requires Letteropener you get a duplicate of the message showing. After each force quit another one appears. Trying to move or delete the message get a hang throwing the error message to console:

28/10/2013 11:50:28.972 am Mail[1548]: CFPropertyListCreateFromXMLData(): Old-style plist parser: missing semicolon in dictionary on line 3. Parsing will be abandoned. Break on _CFPropertyListMissingSemicolon to debug.

I think some of the problems you describe are Maill (This TidBITS http://tidbits.com/article/14219 article lists some of them). Some where fixed with Mail Update for Mavericks.

Also please give version 6.0.4 of Letter Opener a change which includes a lots of improvements on Mavericks.

If there's any way I can be of further assistance please don't hesitate to contact me: support@creativeinaustria.com

This is a great little addition to Mac Mail and especially appreciate the lifetime upgrade license. Pay once and get every upgrade, large or small without additional fees. A great idea I wish more developers would use.

And, by the way, I don't think this developer should be disparaged for charging for his software especially when it is rock solid and he is constantly updating. That takes a lot of work! I think it is well worth the money to be able to open windat files without effort.

I purchased Letter Opener Pro on September 12.

OSX Mavericks was announced in June, and expected to be available in October. In September, Mavericks was available to developers so that you could do the necessary changes.

Do you really want me to pay a new upgrade now, just 5 weeks after i purchased the license?

Any other serious software company would offer a free upgrade path to the version of the currently announced products

Agreed. I paid $35 for the previous version, and now I'm supposed to pay another $15 for this one? For a Mail add-on that I need to use only very infrequently? Not a chance. I'll use the free "TNEF's Enough" from now on.

Mavericks required a complete rewrite of the Plug-in. The upgrade is free for everybody who bought Letter Opener Pro after June 1, 2013 and Lifetime Upgrade Licenses owners.

Apple doesn't offer access do extend Mails functionality so doing a software like Letter Opener requires to reverse engineer the Mail application.

And with every new version of Mail this reverse engineering has do be done again. So the plug-in part has to be rewritten for every major OS update. That's the reason why this is a paid-upgrade.

Creative, I understand what you're saying. Not being a developer myself, I have no insight into how much work is involved in re-writing this plug-in. Nevertheless I have to say that, given it's something I need very infrequently, and for which there is a free alternative, Letter Opener has become too expensive for me. Sorry.

So this means that I actually am eligble for a free upgrade, this also goes for Mike in an earlier post.

Why don't you write on you webpage about the possibility for a free upgrade for users who have bought after June 1, or send them an email, so they know.

Great program - purchased in early Sept. '13 - but just installed Mavericks and it says that LO is not compatible. I purchased the option for free upgrades but I am unsure how to access the free upgrade. It does not seem to be automatic. I just downloaded v6.0 but it looks like I only have a 15 day trial. Anyone have an idea of how I can use my free upgrade option?

I've been using this software for quite some time but I'm tired of having to pay large amounts of money for each upgrade. Specifically I think this isn't worth the $ 14.95 because the developer didn't even have to spend money to acquire the OS update.

With Letter Opener in Apple Mail, the worry is gone. Letter Opener converts winmail.dat files on the fly, so you can actually see and use what the sender intended you to have. There's no fuss with Letter Opener, no need to drag the winmail.dat file onto another application or call upon several programs to help you. Once Letter Opener is installed, email attachments just work!
