ForgEdit is a programmers text editor for Mac OS X, that s designed to be competent yet easy to use. Features include: tabbed editing, user defined key bindings and modes, regular expression find, and a lot more. ForgEdit is free while in beta. Once it is 1.0 i plan to charge a small free (~$20) for a license.

I've been using SubEthaEdit for a while now and my only real complaint is that it isn't as easy as it should be to navigate around in my document. I was hoping that Forgedit would be the answer, but unfortunately it isn't. Like, I want a BACK button, I want a button to take me to the current cursor position (CMD-J will have to do), I want temporary markers that take me to that place with a click (markers that are real easy to set and clear). I'm not getting that with SEE or with Forgeedit. The biggie is that Forgeedit doesn't give me split windows and won't let me open another window with the same file. That's a killer for me. When I'm editing I often refer to other parts of the same document while editing in a certain area, and if I can't see it while typing then I waste time hoping around. Forgedit's nicest feature is the ease in which new modes are created and configured. Not really that much of a plus though, since once created you don't have to continually mess with them.

Hi Wings, and thanks for the review. Split windows is on the way. The other features you ask for is not though, i will put them on the todo. Jumping to caret position should be a breeze. Back button probably wont make it for a while. I do read reviews from time to time, but the best way to get my attention regarding feature requests is to use the contact form at forgedit.com. Sincerely, Stefan

Good stuff man! However. I didn't see any information about external editing capabilities. Are there any plans on integrating the Bare Bones ODB Suite into ForgEdit? See: http://www.barebones.com/support/develop/odbsuite.shtml That would rock! Keep it moving man. Easy

Thank you for the nice review! I have been looking at the ODB Suite, and it will probably find its way into ForgEdit in a future version. It is not on the top of the todo-list right now though.

Interesting with several novel features, especially tabs, which has been absent from other text editors. There is much potential here.

spoketh JCT: "features, especially tabs, which has been absent from other text editors" TextMate has a drawer and tabs, Text Wragler has a drawer... if you're into that kind of thing. Regards, Thor
