The year is 2367. Thirty-two years have passed since the Great War. As Terrans and Vasudans struggle to rebuild their civilizations, civil war erupts in the Polaris system. A rogue Terran admiral declares war against the Vasudans, threatening the stability of the Alliance. Without warning, the Shivans return, and Terrans and Vasudans face annihilation at the hands of their Great War nemesis.
What's New
Version 2.0:
  • A single-player campaign with over 30 missions. New scenarios include flying with Vasudan squadrons, piloting advanced stealth fighters, and "painting" targets with TAG (Target Acquisition & Guidance) missiles.
  • Command up to eleven squadmates in battle. Order them to defend, attack, disarm or disable your target.
  • An in-depth combat system enables players to target and destroy subsystems, disabling engines, defensive turrets, missile batteries, and fighterbays.
  • Armed with cutting-edge weaponry, new fighters and bombers hurl the player into complex, fast-paced WWII-style dogfights.
  • An innovative and immersive nebula environment changes gameplay dynamics. Impaired visibility, communications, and targeting ability create opportunities for ambush and new combat tactics.
  • Up to 12 players can battle in dogfight, team vs. team (8 players max.), and cooperative missions via LAN, TCP/IP, and modem.

there is an app now called FS_Launcher or something along those lines that can configure it for you. Check out this thread for more info:

I just downloaded freespace 2 but it won't run any of the missions. It starts and has cut scenes and briefings and everything else but as soon as you "commit" to a mission it dies. Does anybody know what is going wrong?

The download was a pain indeed but it was worth the wait. :-)

Two minor points:

- I experienced two crashes while playing so far (10.4.4, Pb 1.33, 1.5 Ram)

- some keys not recognized on a french Apple USB keyboard.

I have the Linux version of FreeSpace 2 which is based on the same core as the Mac and I am also experiencing some problems with a USB French Keyboard. It's not too troublesome because you can reassign most of the keys. However, I was unable to do this for the communications menu (when you press C in the default settings) because the numbers require a shift on French keyboards. Does anyone know of a fix or workaround?

System Prefs > International > Menu Saisie

I thought using the config "Francais - numérique" (i.e. SHIFTLOCK = numbers 1-9 above keyboard) or even "Americain" or "Americain etendu" but no luck.

something to do that one is Roman and other Unicode ?

try to browse around in the system prefs

Wish the servers were working properly...I get between 10 - 20 megs and the download always stops with a corrupted file.

I LOVE THIS GAME!!!!!!!

This is by far the best space combat flight sim ever created!

you can switch the resolution and color depth by going into ~/Library/FS2_Open/fs2_open.ini
you open with text edit. Switch the 640x480 to 1024x768 and the 16 to a 32 and then save the file. make sure you didn not add any spaces or anything. Now Freespace2 is running @ 1024x768 and millions of colors. It looks amazing!

Wohoo. Finally. Freespace 2 on the Mac, after all these time...I remember playing through the campaigns on a friend's PC years ago and wishing someone would port it.

As of time of this post, the download links don't work. But hopefully they will some time.

The download links do work, the servers are apparently quite busy. I just now tried the primary download link and it worked, I then stopped the download and attempted to start it again, it did not begin again. This tells me the servers are very busy.

no, the link actually seems to be broken. I logged on to the server using Transmit and browsed to the folder specified but nothing was there that resembled Freespace.

Well, once again I was able to get one of the download links to work, I believe it was the 'ftp3' link.

But once again, minutes later, I could not repeat the success with that link or any other. Strange.

We're working to clear things up but the game has become very popular and the servers have been hit with over 3,000 download requests since this was made public. You should have better sucess with the alternate download links at the end of the description.

The link dose work i am downloading it at this very moment but apparently the server is very busy because it took me several tries to get the thing to start plus it is a very big file i can see it's 1.43 GB and its moving at about 47 KB pr sec.
I guess everyone will just have to be very patient.
