MacGizmo

1.0.8
27 July 2007

Finder-based application content viewer.

Overview

Note: MacGizmo is no longer under development, and it is no longer available for sale.

MacGizmo is an application that allows you to see the content and other useful information of any selected items in the Finder and of other participating software programs. It is very easy to use: select an item and see the content.

MacGizmo currently fully supports most of the common kinds of items that populate a disk, like: images, sounds, music, video, text, pdfs, Web files, fonts, folders, applications and many more.

MacGizmo does not just provide a preview, it also allows you to navigate as a Web browser, have full access to pdf and text files, read help and the recent items opened by an application simply by selecting it, hear music, see videos and, where applicable, print and search content.

What's new in MacGizmo

Version 1.0.8:
  • Added a button in the main window that allows the application to be put to sleep
  • Fixed a bug that caused crashes when certain types of files were selected
  • Fixed other bugs

Holy moly - how cool is this. Amazing, cool looking and very useful. Price is a little steep but (probably) worth it!!!!

This app hasn't been updated for 12 years now! When clicking the "Developer website" link above, it turns out it's still for sale, but the price is now $10, not $20 as indicated here at MacUpdate.

I bought this app because it really is convenient to view information within a document without having to open it. I find it particularly handy if I am just needing to copy a little snippet of text or info from one of my documents quickly and don't want to have to launch the app it was created in. In reference to the previous poster who wanted to limit how it activates, this can be set up within the preferences so that everything you hover over doesn't get viewed. You can set it so that if you only want to view a certain item, you can hold the option key while selecting the document you want to view. In preferences, under "View", UNcheck the sentence "Will activate automatically when cursor is moved over its window" and if you want the "Option key" complete control, check the box "Press the option key while selecting an item to show" because then it will ONLY activate by holding down the option key when you purposely want to view an item you click on. It's a very very handy app, and I highly recommend it. I find I use it every day.

This is just my opinion, and others might think the opposite. But I found the interface to be a little obtrusive. I certainly don't want this tool to pop up on any and every single applicable file that I'm hovering the mouse over. I might very likely be missing something crucial here, but after my quick evaluation, I decided to pass this one, since I couldn't find any Preferences in order to set it up, so that it pops up less often (and only when I want it to). In such a case, where there IS a Preferences window somewhere in MacGizmo, please forgive me for missing it, but nevertheless, in that case I would suggest that the developer make it more clear how reach it. Lots of people evaluate (software) products in a matter of seconds. And if you don't feel right at home from the start, you simply toss it away. So there's probably some room for improvements there. I also found the window's graphic style a bit unconventional (which doesn't necessarily have to be all that wrong). Adding an option to set it to normal Finder style ui graphics would be great. Even adding a second, more clean and elegant graphic style would be prefereable. Something like the smallish windows in Aperture, where the windows are all different gradations of black (with transparency in them). This is meant as constructive criticism, as I'd love to see MacGizmo become a great app, since the main idea and concept are all great. And because of my very quick/limited/intolerant test evaluation, I'm not rating this down, as I might have missed some major qualities in that short time. Good luck with further improvement!

to SEMIOTICMONKEY: I agree, the price is a bit steep, but those other two plugins are not as elegant as this, I find anyway. And true, this may not be entirely new, functionality-wise, the way it does it feel very, very Mac-like! I like it!
