Mac HelpMate overview

Mac HelpMate... If you're a Mac support professional or consultant, you need this application in your arsenal of troubleshooting tools. It can replace a whole bunch of expensive products, including Timbuktu, eCare, and many others...

Mac HelpMate contains powerful diagnostic features, such as the ability to run SMART (S.M.A.R.T) tests, check temperature and hardware sensors, inspected installed packages, repair permissions, clean caches, remove unecessary trash files, ASR multicast server, support for Growl notifications and much much more.

Mac HelpMate remains a free and useful program, but can be enhanced with a Mac HelpMate Professional account subscription that enables zero-configuration screen sharing. Its sister products, also currently included with a subscription are: Mac UserMate (Mac HelpMate with a simplified interface), Win HelpMate to control Windows Computers, and Auto HelpMate which allows a subscriber to initiate a screen sharing session from a Web page.

Many consultants have asked over the last year months about personalized copies of Mac HelpMate and Win HelpMate for their customers as well as the ability to initiate screen sharing with no one logged into the computer, and I'm happy to say it's now a reality - desktop control/screen sharing through firewalls with no extra router configuration. Help anyone, anywhere, even behind routers. The client, user or customer just downloads a subscriber's personalized copy, shares their screen, and in less than 45 seconds, they can control the remote computer.

In recent tests, Mac HelpMate easily handled remote control of a 30-inch Cinema Display over a DSL connection. To share or control a Mac there's nothing to install on the client machine outside of Mac HelpMate itself (you can even run it off of the Disk Image) and no admin password is required to initiate sharing or control. An account subscription is needed for the remote control/application and branding to work as well as the email alerts over an alternate SMTP port so that people who have ISPs that block port 25 can still alert you.

Absolutely the greatest maintenance and assistance application there ever was. Beware, today it will not work with Yosemite and the developer does not announce date or answer email or phone calls.

I almost didn't write this review because I see this application as such a business advantage I almost want to keep it secret. MacHelpMate is simply the best remote support application out there for a small consultancy - There's no need for a client to configure a router or plug into the cable modem directly to get remote access - They either download a file or click on a link. It's super simple, and it makes remote support pretty much turn-key. If you a consultant dealing with small to medium mac and windows clients, you need this. But please, don't listen to me. Get something else :)

I guess I was too quick and eager in my praise .. This app is not Leopard compatible ... and the autoexecute feature doesn't seem to work on my Panther system ... Oh well ... back to Onyx I go ...

To Mr. Developer ... you need to tell people that to access the app properly they will need to unlock it with their administrator password. I found out by trial and error. Also .... Why do you have an auto execute along with a "perform tasks" later? Isn't it the same thing. When I check "later" I get the spinning black progress clock indicator that never stops and I have to quit. When I restart Mac Helpmate asks me fix preferences ... which I do and everything is okay. I don't want to nitpick because this is such a great app but I thought you should know ... Thanks again for this wonderful work ..

Goodbye Onyx, Tiger and Leopard Cache Cleaner, and Cocktail ... This app replaces them all for me ... One big, big extra is its ability to execute any of its maintenance and cleaning routines automatically at a specified time. The GUI is very intuitive .. there's a ton of features if you want them ... this app does a lot more .. check it out ... I love the growl notification ... Excellent work!

I have used several applications in the past to keep my Macs healthy- OnyX, Cocktail, Tiger Cache Cleaner, and Maintenance; however, this little application I have grown to really appreciate. It works perfectly, and has quickly become my end-of-the-day clean-up program. I appreciate the developer's efforts, and encourage them to keep up the efforts in making this a wonderful program.

Great applicaton. I like it better than Onxy simply because of the option to "execute" all the maintaince runs in the auto tab. Onyx does not have this valuable feature. I would rather run this program and be finished than run each routine individually. My choice between Onxy, Cocktail and this Application... You guessed it, Mac Helpmate. Not because it's free unlike Cocktail... because it does the job (Great) FOR FREE. My single complaint, which is not a big deal for me is: When I tried to set auto execute the program crashed. That said, this is version 1, think of the future possibilities. Great Job.

I guess I have tried 80% or more of all the maintenance utilities and system tweaking tools that have been released. This product, is one of the best I have seen. It has a great interface, small, yet easy to understand and see. It is easy to use and does not require a degree in computer science to use. For the hobbyist, it gives plenty of information and feedback on exactly what the functions are and what the results are. For the naive user it allows the person in auto mode to select a script and take care of their common maintenance tasks without being a Unix Geek. It also offers plenty of functionality for the advanced user and will serve well to handle a majority of their maintenance needs. I especially like the fact that the majority of tools and tweaks I use are in a single app. It seems very stable, especially for a first release. Up till now I have been using Tweak Freak and Onyx but after working with HelpMate, that may change. I feel that this product has the potential to toss an entire folder of maintenance routines, except for MainMenu, because of its convenience as a maintenance tool in my menu bar. If so, I will free up around 42MB in apps, that I keep around for these purposes. In fact if this proves to be as useful as I anticipate, I expect to downsize to the following products: HelpMate for my main maintenance and tweaking MainMenu for a quick tune-up AppleJack for a badly corrupt system Safari Enhancer for its unique Safari mods, including cache disabling which speeds up browsing on broadband. CLIX for advanced operations. I am adding HelpMate to my "must have" list of Apps.

Wow, great user interface, for every task a really useful description in the status bar area shows up telling you what it does. I'm running in a limited user account and for the following uses it doesn't require my admin password: 1. Show/hide invisible files in Finder 2. Cool hidden dock preferences 3. Run dashboard widgets on desktop :) 4. Hide desktop icons. I run Blue Skies screen saver as desktop background using Desksaver Plus Widget and Spirited Away to keep visible windows to a minimum. (All programs mentioned are free and available on MacUpdate) This program does a whole lot more but if it only did one of the four I mentioned I'd still keep it around. Cannot comment on stability, only been using it for a short while but have noticed no issues. So far, so great :)
