Iridium1.9.F

25 April 2006

Unified white metal theme for your toolbars.

Overview

The Iridium theme whitens metal and applies a unified toolbar look to all applications including Cocoa, Carbon, X11, and qt/Mac applications.

Iridium's motto is "One look to unite them all and in the lightness bind them!" This has meant that a few features of Iridium have had to be changed in order to fix bugs. And Iridium now has its own installer, no other software required.

Quit all other programs before installing. You will need to logout or reboot for all changes to take effect.

What's new in Iridium

Version 1.9.F:
  • Iridium now installs on all PPC and Intel Macs.
  • Version 1.9.F is my final solo release of Iridium. Within the week, future development of Iridium will be opened to the community at MacOpenSource. Contact me there if you would like to help.

Excellent, finally now my Tiger looks like Leopard !!!! I don't know, but it also seems somehow faster. I love the new Safari, it looks much more positive now, and I can finally read the tab titles!! The Finder windows, oh my god, I instantly fell in love, this looks like the Rhapsody theme!! I love it!! Thank you so much, please keep up the work, maybe there are other possible themes!! One little glitch though, on the small windows like e. g. "Copy" or "Empty Trash" the line between the title bar and the window content is missing.

-Add a better bar slide separator in small window mode (take from original Aqua 10.4, it better than a grey bar…) -Why not add prefs: Bar slide lighter/Darker Boutons Color Themes for all Apps Little cleaner than UNO on result, but very ugly install…

But this.. this works great! no need for ShapeS n all that, very clean and of course very beautiful!.. Thanks..the only (tiny) bug i noticed might be the bottom corners of Quicktime windows which looks a bit weird, but acceptable

Iridium is a beautiful theme, one of the best I've ever seen. I used it consistently for many months and found it to be nearly trouble-free; only very occasional glitches, and usually these happened where Apple deviated from their own standard practices (Fast User Switching menulet, Bookmarks separater in Safari, etc). It is *very* bright however, so be sure to check the screenshots before installing. Myself, I liked it. My quibbles: I don't like the background 'shelf' graphic for Dashboard widgets, the Apple/G5-style one was nicer. And the lack of any demarcation between the toolbar area that you can grab, and the actual button area, is tricky to discern. 'Real' unified toolbar apps (like Mail) let you drag the window ANYWHERE there isn't an icon. Apps that have the old draggable toolbar only - you can't tell where the draggable area begins with Iridium installed. A minor annoyance. Great work though. I wish Apple was as consistent. Iridium Finder looks way better than the bushed metal Apple default look.

Theme works fine, however IridiumTunes screws up iTunes! Installed it on my iBook with Tiger on iTunes 6x or above. (as per instructions). Open up iTunes only to find there's no display any longer. Jesus, when are these people gonna test this stuff before they distribute it? Now I've got to find out how to fix what this crappy app has broken. Lousy and Cheap = 1 star!

I have to say, as much as I like the functionality of OS X, it's UI has been getting funkier and funkier every upgrade with a new "style" introduce literally each point release... Between Aqua, metal, unified, the weird Mail only nasty buttons, etc... I can only wish they'd get it together and made it look as good as Iridium. But somehow I have the feeling that's not going to happen any time soon... So Iridium is the solution :)

Due to circumstances beyond my control, the new release of ThemeChanger has not arrived. DLTA is the native file format for ThemeChanger and according to ShapeShifter, it can use DLTA files too. I provided links above for both the DLTA files and for the Panther version of Iridium. I will continue to make DLTA files (since I do it as part of my dev cycle) and I will release all betas in DLTA format. Release Candidates (RC) will then be used to test the installer with the new mods. And, until ThemeChanger makes a new release, the actual releases of Iridium will continue to use my installer. I am a big fan of ThemeChanger and am active in helping Abhi Beckhert work on the new release. If anyone else here would like to help speed Iridium's transition to full ThemeChanger support, please consider helping out on the http://themechanger.sf.net project.

Why has support for ShapeShifter et al been dropped - all these third party installers for themes going around are very disparate and are only segmenting theme usage further. Sure, ShapeShifter may not be perfect, or at times play nice, but at least its central and unified. I will be sticking with 1.6.3 as I see no usable benefits to this release.

Sagefire, a review.. be it good or bad ... should be read and thought about. But don't take negative reviews too personally... and don't forgt that it is an impossibility to please everybody ;) You're doing a damn fine job with Iridium. I love the slick yet simple GUI and I LOVE the standalone installer. Just carry on walking on the path that you chose when starting with Iridium.

A GUI should be clean, clear, consistent, easy on the eyes, and should not draw undue attention to itself. Iridium is nearly perfect in this regard. Unlike most themes, Iridium stems from an extremely simple concept -- unify "unified" -- and succeeds tremendously. The simplest solutions are always the best. At the same time, Apple's mix of Aqua and Textured (brushed metal) is not without some merit, as windows with different looks make them easier to tell apart at a glance, e.g. Mail from Safari, but giving each application an unique GUI is ultimately not a good solution. It's schizophrenic. And I fear this is what OS X is becoming with its Textured, Aqua, Aqua Unified, Pro and Garage Band appearances all cluttering the screen at once. Iridium takes a conservative approach like Platinum did, but keeps most of the charm of Aqua intact and propagates itself system wide (or nearly so), without stooping to over design or becoming gaudy and intolerable. Inspired.

I would like to state, for the record, that I am not "anti-ThemeChanger". In fact, if you follow the "Wanna be a beta tester?" link in the download, you will find a DLTA file that will allow you to use ThemeChanger to install Iridium. Why did I develop my own installer? Well, I got a lot of mail from people who were scared of ThemeChanger because of its version number. So, I developed my own installer. I have spoken with the ThemeChanger developer, and a version 1.0 is not that far away. Once it arrives, I will build an Iridium v2.0 which will be released as a DLTA file only. Why does it "seem" that I am anti-ShapeShifter? Well, SS says that it can install from DLTA files, but it chokes on them from time to time. This means that Unsanity has more work to do on this feature. And, unless people actually send them bug reports along this line, they won't do it. I hope that clears everything up.

I agree with the comments of the other writer. The author of Iridium seems to have some kind of hangup with ShapeShifter, which I like very much. Although I appreciate the enormous effort which the guy has put into this free product, he overcomplicates his product with too many bit's and pieces. I personally find the scheme bland, flat and unappealing overall. Maybe some highlights somewhere could be worked into the metallic theme or perhaps some subtle color hints and definitely some depth or modelling for a bit of drama? Please understand, I'd be thrilled to use this unified theme if it were more like the, say the ShapeShifter "X-Metal" theme, which I find gorgeous. Of course, this is just one person's personal aestheic observation. Thanks very much for your creative and technical efforts just the same!

OH MY SWEET LORD. Is there any particular reason for this anti-ShapeShifter/anti-ThemeChanger madness? The installer is the most tedious thing I have ever used... "You have not run this backup" and "You have not run that backup" and "This must be run from the disc image to work properly" I understand the need for backups, but could you design a more friendly installer? Perhaps just one app package instead of the what, four different ones for backup and restoration? Need I remind of you that the purpose of a computer is for IT to do all the work?

There are a few applications I can't live without on my computer: FFView, Desktop Manager, Butler, MenuMeters... The Chrominium theme is one of them. OS is good, faaaaaaar better than Wincrap and Linux, but not perfect. These applications enhance the OS X experience: ergonomy, stability, fun, usability. Most of them, if not all, are free: seems there's still hope for humanity ;-) To the developper: thank you. With Platinium/Iridum/Chrominium you've made a dream come true, i.e. a viable alternative to the default theme without unstable hacks. Congratulations!

Very well done. Apple really should adopt most of these changes in the future. However, I think that it is too difficult to tell the difference between active and inactive windows. Also, I've always thought that the menus should look similar to the menubar, which is not the case in 10.4 and not the case with Palladium - the menus becomes too dark. After much consideration, I switched back to the default look of OSX 10.4, but this was doubtless the best attempt I've seen to replace it.

First let me tell you that I like Apple's brushed metal interface and IMHO it is the best theme ever made for an OS. Nevertheless I've found Iridium to be great. Second best theme ever made... Maybe a bit too bright on my laptop, DarkAdapted resolved this issue (a suggestion: make a darker version). 1°/ I love the stand alone installer: Shapeshifter is an expensive shareware, it slows down everything and is not stable at all with pro softwares. Iridium is fast and works perfectly well in production. It seems even faster than the brushed metal environement (I am not sure about that, perhaps a placebo effect?). 2°/ Iridium is a pleasant and productive theme, as good as a true Apple skin. It looks like Mail 2: elegant. It is not a tedious gadget, not the usual Shapeshifter theme, bad SciFi movie crap with ugly buttons... 3°/ The moment of true is here and now: it is the first, unique time I don't feel the need to uninstall a non-Apple theme after a few hours. Kudos to the developper. Thanks.

I finally bit the bullet and tried Iridium (version 1.5) on my guinea pig FireWire HD running OS 10.4.2. Nice, no problems at all, it's just a bit too white for me... oh well. For me, a grey color about halfway between the old Apple 'Platinum' and the color that Iridium is using now would be great. I think. Heh. Very nice work and thanks for making it, the price is really perfect. Thanks again.

If any of you still want the DTLA file for use with ThemeChanger or ShapeShifter, I have decided to package a current one here: http://sagefire.org/files/iridium/iridium.zip There is also a link to it provided in the current download.

You know, it really takes a lot to make me gush like a fanboy, but ditto what the other poster said, this REALLY is the shit. Designers and techies like me who sit in front of LCDs all day DO NOT need crud like 'traffic buttons' and beveled menus, etc etc etc. Any color other than GRAY blows our colorsense when working on web or print layouts. Apple got this message years ago when they made Platinum. Then desperately NEED this message again. Until then, we have this theme. Kudos to the Developer for stepping up. All this author is doing is swapping out Finder resources. I'd say that you carry the same risk running third party apps to do this as you do running the Bash script that does it the Unix way. Yes, these are system resources, so BACK UP. That's just prudence! "You've done a man's job, sir!" - Edward James Olmos, Blade Runner

*please* make a ShapeShifter version. I hate stand-alone themes which modify the system. SS doesn't modify the system and can be easily deactivated rather than requiring a restore to un-install it. I will not use this unless it's made into a SS theme.

Thank you. You've made Theme Mod so fun and safe. The theme is the best I've ever seen on Mac.

I been commenting on this theme for awhile... I loved it but hated the aqua blue overstate while using shapeshifter. BUT NOW! Standalone installer, either aqua or graphite ... this is the best theme for me.... just the shit! Keep it up!

Amazingly beautiful theme ! Changed for iridium some times ago, and never went back to aqua. The new installer make it very easy to replace, but i'd like an option not to skin iTunes. Anyway, this fixes the glitches in Limewire apparence.

Great!! Ure da man! But safari unified toolbar is gone! :( I had noticed the Safari Bookmark glitch before, and I can live with it, but I can't live with a flat safari toolbar. Maybe U can point out the resource that changed in 1.5 so I can put it back in in future Iridium releases for personal use. Thank You! Anyway, THE BEST THEME EVER! Keep your good work!

The theme is great and is exactly what I have been wanting since Tiger's release. One thing though. The iTunes skin is darker than the rest of the apps. The gradient occurs from the middle out, not the top down. It actually looks to me almost like the original brushed metal without the texture. Anyway, overall great job

Fantastic! This is what i thought Tiger was going to look like while I was waiting for it to come out. I was very disappointed to find Apple only used the "unified" look on a couple of apps, and not on the Finder. Iridium corrects the oversight. Great work!

1.4 un-unifies all of my unified apps and unifies all the non-unified ones. I wish everything was unified. But it sure looks cool! Thanks for the great work... this is the best theme I've ever tried.

I understand that your not really supporting Shapeshifter so having colors other that that hateful aqua blue is not going to happen... but I installed ThemeChanger and now I'm getting error messages. "Error parsing 'Main.themescript' for the tpkg2 format theme at /path/to/library. It will be skipped" I guess the point is: why develop .dlta when ThemeChanger development seems dead? I'm using 10.4.2 with all updates.

Absolutely great! One of the best and most beautiful themes I've ever seen! And it keeps improving although I thought it can't... Thanks for making it free, and thanks for avoiding unsanity's haxies. I don't intend to install nor buy ShapeShifter. Keep up the good work!
