OmniGraphSketcher for Mac1.2.4

01 August 2012

Create elegant and precise graphs easily (discontinued).

What is OmniGraphSketcher for Mac

Note: OmniGraphSketcher was discontinued in late February 2014. The Omni Group has generously allowed Open-Source developers to take over the project.

OmniGraphSketcher (formerly Graph Sketcher) helps you make elegant and precise graphs in seconds, simply by sketching what you want. Specifically designed for reports, presentations, and problem sets where you need to produce sharp-looking graphs on the fly, OmniGraphSketcher combines the data plotting power of charting applications with the ease of a basic drawing program.

Add as many lines as you like to represent goals, cutoffs, or other boundaries. Shade in areas, connect and align objects, and add labels anywhere on the graph as you go. Enter data visually with a click of the mouse, and if your data is already in a spreadsheet or database program, just copy and paste it right into OmniGraphSketcher.

OmniGraphSketcher has an intuitive and simple interface so that you can quickly find what you want, while behind-the-scenes algorithms take care of all the details. It's an ideal solution for anyone who needs to make plots and graphs without the hassle of using a complicated data visualization program.

What's new in OmniGraphSketcher

Version 1.2.4:
  • OmniGraphSketcher 1.2.4 is a minor update that fixes problems with the Japanese and French localizations restored in version 1.2.3.

In general I like this app with its uncluttered approach, however, when importing excel data to produce some simple line charts (like the inverse sine curve) it produces some strange kinks in the curve which looks really odd especially as a sine curve is supposed to be nice and smooth. Increasing the number of data points doesn't necessarily help either. Datagraph does a nice job but is pricy.

Wow! This app is so intuitive. I wish Numbers could be this way. (For that matter Excel). It is innovative and raises the bar for data visualization. Um, data visualization for the rest of us! And,... the price is right! Even as a beta it proved to be stable. My guess is Omni still has some more features to add, which is OK with me.

I bought it two weeks ago. No regrets. Works smooth, even being a beta. I work with sheets with more than 2k lines, and the plot here happens. Faster and more beautiful than using Numbers. I am excited about the software evolution. I hope it keeps the track. I recommend it.

I am wondering to buy this software, but 30 bucks! sounds expensive, once OmniGraffle is a more complete software, even iWork with all the features. Well, let's see. Omni do a good job always. To me is one of the best software-houses, and this software shows potential. But it is expensive at moment.

Finally I found why this version is crashing when launched. The problem is an incompatibility with Default Folder. I just add it to the excluded application in Default Folder and everything is working perfectly. May be the developer could check why it's incompatible with Default Folder

I love this program, because I find it so incredibly useful and very simple to use. Since I am studying to become a Social Science teacher, this program has helped me with a major assignment in one of my Foundations of Teaching courses. I always pay for Shareware programs that make my life easier, and this program is going to do that for me when I get my first secondary Social Science (Economics, Geography, History) classroom.

The program does just what the name suggests, make quick 2-D plots, either sketched by hand or plotted from data. For this use, it seems far better than Numbers, which has a strong urge to plot in 3-D no matter how simple the data set. I had hoped Graph Sketcher would also import and plot columns of data from Excel, but no. I highlighted and copied two columns of numbers in Excel, representing x and y coordinates of data points, only to find that Graph Sketcher places the Excel row numbers in the x-column, while displaying my x values as data labels. A little more work is needed on this feature.

I have been looking for a Mac solution to creating graphs, since I got an Intel (since Excel 2004 runs in rosetta). I am a student of biology and one MUST for my graphs are the error bars. When iWork '08 came out with numbers I was excited, but it only lastet till I heard it can't do error bars...nor could most of the programs I tried (Freeware and Shareware). I'll give this one a quick look and decide if I want to buy it then.

Weird program. I had hoped that it would allow one to draw a graph by overlaying scanned data, enabling the extraction of data from research articles (or even the NYTimes), but I can't seem to find such a feature. While it's easy to put multiple lines on a single chart, and easy to add various additional information, the program is limited to 2D point and line data (I know the description says it's ideal for 2-D graphing tasks, but for $30, I expect a little more).

I don't notice the words "publication quality" in the description anywhere. While it looks nice enough for, say, presentations, none of the screenshots on the developer's site look like something I'd use for scientific publications. For example, what can it do for black-and-white graphs (i.e., no page charges for color)?

I've just downloaded it now. I haven't given it a full tryout just yet, but at first glance, it seems perfect for my economics course. The description given here by the developer is spot on, and it's nice to see them point out what it doesn't do for a change, finally giving a balanced point of view on their app, and thus making it easier for consumers. Thanks a lot for the program, the discount.

It's so small! and quite good for what it does -- could be useful for quickly creating graphs for lecture notes and seminar talks, when Excel or Numbers would be overkill, or you just don't have actual data points. I like the way it adjusts the axes as you enter x,y points, and a handle appears after you draw a line, so you can adjust its curvature.

I need something to create nice graphs for publications, but not sure if this fits the bill, Will have to try it and see what it can handle, otherwise it's back to Illustrator...

Now this looks like a useful program... I'll try the demo and see if it's as good as it looks.

seems pretty basic, not sure I'd use this over the built in illustrator tools.

I've used this with my regular-level high school physics students with no problems for the past year or so. They can use the program without much instruction from me, which goes to show how simple the program is to use (they couldn't use Excel to save their grades, let alone lives!). I can read their data, they get their labs done more quickly and accurately, and it's all done with a minimum of effort on everyone's part. And until the graphing features of Pages/Keynote match Graph Sketcher's ease and control, this will be my graphing program of choice.

awesome! as a geologist and electronic musician who often finds that standard graphing software makes it difficult to represent simple but specific things, this is great! For simple displays to demonstrate concenpts in geology, or to do approximate frequency/musical activity or stereo-image graphs for studio techniques class… Great for graphing subjective things where the visual is more important than the numbers! I just would like some way of making a curve - bezier?, or some other method? rather than just line segments. But otherwise excellent. Interface is clean and easy easy to learn.

eeer, well in your startupdisk/Applications/Utilities you will find Grapher! its free, and does many graphs. "Oh, right. For now at least, Graph Sketcher is not a function graphing program (try Grapher in Mac OS X Tiger)." well, in Grapher you can also just input coordinates ("New Point Set") which it will draw, (also the option to create a trend/formula best fitted to those cordinates.) and Grapher does 3D graphs. I guess that if you want basic graphs, take this. (Grapher is more useful, IMHO, ... if you know how to use it)

Perfect! every student should have this on their Mac! Now I don't have to dish out $200 for an expensive calculator just to draw graphs - and here I can do it even better!

Wow! Terrific. I copied data from a Pages table, pasted into graph area, presto-data points. Click best fil curve and the graph is complete with equation! Export to jpg drag to Pages resize. Works perfect. Thanks Robin et al.
