Every time I use this program -- just used it this morning to check a whole bunch of new images I imported into iPhoto recently and found several dozen dupes -- I think this is about the best $7.95 I've ever spent on anything. The program just *works* and has great built-in intelligence and best of all, safe-guards. I've tried other ways to find and elimnate dupes and really messed up my iPhoto library. With Duplicate Annihilator, I know my data is safe. This is a one-trick poney, but it's worth every penny. Highly recommended.

I've just bought this product and it takes so long and it gives different duplicate numbers each time. When checking the 'duplicate' images I find many are not duplicates at all. There is no instant visual comparison of original and duplicate like other software. Ive spent so long trying all sorts of preference options without success. First software I've bought off the internet that has given me such headaches. I'm using it on my mac running Snow Leopard. i have a newer mac (Sierra)which can download the free Duplicate Cleaner from iTunes and it takes 2 mins to do what Annihilator takes 3 hours.

The latest version doesn't work with the new Mac Photo, at least not on my system. That is, Duplicate Annihilator identifies duplicates but doesn't mark all (or even most) them, so there's no way to remove the duplicates. When I reported the problem, Brattoo was very responsive and pleasant, but until the problem is fixed I wouldn't recommend the software. Here's their reply, "This is an internal Photos error which seems to occur now and then, we have reported it to Apple and hopefully it will be resolved soon. It does not happen to every Photos library but some customers have reported it. Sometimes it happens to all photos and sometimes to only a few. We are trying to pinpoint when and why it happens but unfortunately we have not been able to get this error in our labs."

Good one! Very efficient and cheap, but with single function, some similar DuplicateFinder can find duplicate files, music, not only duplicates in iphoto.

I've always be happy with this app. Very efficient, the process is a bit tedious, but it works quite nicely. I haven't tested the brand new version 5 yet, but something has puzzled me for some time now: Aperture and iPhoto now share the same library format. Why have a different app for iPhoto and Aperture then?

Application is okay and works as advertised. But their constant (almost weekly) updates for minor things smacks of updates-to-promote-their-product on this site. It is really annoying and, I'm assuming, a waste valuable time, to constantly update without knowing how crucial they are.

In "unregistered" mode you can scan up to 500 photos. This is certainly sufficient to make a buying decision. It is a small program and it runs quickly and quietly - nice! Options for the disposition of duplicates are useful and understandable. I was looking for one more thought, that of moving the photo to the system trash. Instead, it remains in the iPhoto trash and your only choice is to leave it there or delete it in iPhoto. This was never something that I liked about iPhoto and it is not something that Duplicate Annihilator should be faulted for. I found changing the comments to "duplicate" or "original" as a good alternative to deleting photos. It gives you a chance to review your photos one more time in case there is a problem. The "Find and annihilate duplicates" button is somewhat understated but that is a style opinion. It could be bigger/more colorful. This is a great time saver - I think I'll buy it!

It's a one trick pony. But it seems to do that trick very well. I'm not sure how realistic it is but I took off half a star for speed or lack thereof - it takes around 3 hours to go through 11,000 pictures. I feel it ought to be faster, but I've no idea if it could or how it could be faster. It's easy to use, is explained well and the family licence is very cheap for what it offers. And it has never fallen over on me. I suspect the dupes that creep in are due to syncing pictures across 5 Macs.

A software developer by trade, I often write my own scripts to automate tedious tasks in order to have the best control over the end result. After many hours of working on my own and pulling in several open source alternatives, I purchased Duplicate Annihilator for less than $10. Not only has this program identified my iPhoto duplicates MORE ACCURATELY than what I produced after hours of manual and script work, but it did so with no supervision. An excellent software and great support. I highly reccomend this product to anyone who wants to enjoy their photos instead of organizing them.

Ok, I am an OS X noob but when I tried this app it told me I have no duplicates in my iPhoto library. Altough I am 100% sure it has tons of duplicates! As a test I duplicated several with a different name and it still didn't found those. It does search thru the library though - it scanned the correct amount of photos I have (+5000). Am I doing something wrong?

Before the update I had 0 duplicates with DA. After update I have 88 duplicates, none seem legit. Update does make it a tad faster though so that's good. This app has always been pretty solid so please fix. Thanks

I've tried out a few apps but this one is the best for me. There are many option and it works very fast! Where other apps failed to recognize the difference between a real photo and a thumbnail this app performed the job 100% well :) My iPhoto library contains about 45000 photos. It's also very affordable so I've bought a Family Pack. A few minor things are lack of translations (I live in Belgium) and the UI coold be better in my opinion (but that's a personal thought).

Bought and used the Aperture version. Bottom line is that I would recommend this. But: — It is not an annihilator at all. It finds suspected duplicates and tags them. That's all. You have to do the deletion. — The speed. It takes time. But these things do. — The instructions are incomplete. They do not mention that after the application finishes, you need to do things in Aperture to find, evaluate and delete the photos. — The Aperture version does not work unless you (with some risk) rename your iPhoto library to be recognized. I have no idea how accurate it really is. I deleted 3,000 dups. The ones I checked were real dups, but I cannot attest that I did not delete something unique. It was advertised to be packaged with an orphaned thumbnail remover. Maybe that is built into the app now. Again. Seemed to do the job well at low cost and in only a few hours.

Overall comment: SLOW! I can't believe how slow this program is and I'm running it on a Macbook 2.4Ghz with 7200RPM hard drive, 8gb RAM. Just to sort 20'000 photos takes 3 days! And, worse of all, it completely neglected some duplicates despite using it's "Magic Mode" when the file was identical in name. Would not recommend. I saw some reviews which gave it 5 Stars saying it's fast - I tried it also on my iMac 3.06Ghz and it takes just as long, just minus a few hours! Would not recommend.

It took a while to scan a friend's library (20,000+ photos) but Duplicate Annhilator did a great job of identifying and deleting more than 8,000 dupes that my friend had accidentally re-imported. And she was ecstatic about only paying $8 for that privilege.

Just ran duplicate program and it found 484 in 8300 files. Freeing up 700MB I set it to mark with comment but when I went to COMPARE IMAGES, it only said IMAGES IDENTICAL, it did not show me any images to compare. I would like to run this app to delete rather than comment but am concerned about it dumping dups without my being able to confirm they are dups. There is no help menu so I am stuck. What should I do? Can't really rate as I have not used it all the way through

Please let me know if Duplicate Annihilator can work on multiple iPhoto libraries simultaneously and not only remove the duplicates, but also combine the disparate libraries, saving as many extant photos as possible, and at least recovering thumbnails of photos that no longer exist in their original location, thereby consolidating all of my remaining photos in one place without redundancy. If you can, then you have a sale! :-)

Recently moved 25,248 photos/video clips in my old iMac G5 iPhoto library to an external hard drive and then onto new iMac 27 inch, somehow resulting in 61,601 images in the new iPhoto library. Purchased and used Duplicate Annihilator in Magic mode to go after the presumed duplicates. It took 96 hours to complete and came up with 1394 duplicates. Spot checking, it did a good job of labeling a duplicate but not if there were 3 or 4 of the same image, it would just label one as a duplicate. I then ran Thumbnail Annihilator, it took 47 hours to complete and came up with 29,857 thumbnails. Do the math and there are still a possible 5,102 extra images not accounted for. I am not in the mood to search them out, so despite 143 hours of Annihilator work, I may clean out/reformat the new Imac and work with Apple support to transfer the iPhoto library. So I would say Duplicate Annihilator is easy to use but is very slow and not 100% capture.

I just want to say that this vendor has bent over backwards to help me fix my iPhoto problem, at no charge, and I don't even own a copy of their software. This type of Customer Service is rare. Secondly, I would gladly remove my comments below but cannot figure-out how to do so. Most sites allow the author of a comment to remove it. If MacUpdate allows this, I have not yet found out how.

Downloaded the software yesterday and ran it on my 20k photos for 7 hours based on the recommended search function. The program fround 2400 duplicates but I cant find the 2 pictures in my iPhoto library. When trying to compare the 2 pictures in the compare tab, it only shows IMAGE 1, there is not image 2. Any suggestions for this?

I am very happy with the product as I have 5 mac's with photos strewn about I am merging them on to one and will have over 120 k photos and clips at about 100 k I realized there were dups so I cranked up the annihilator ...I am half way thru an estimated 5 days...eeeek Md5 returns a 32 byte hash .. assume you need more in a table let say 100 bytes 100k photos is a table 10meg ...tiny by todays standards with multi core compares after table build and a serialized dup table update you should finish in way less than an hour still love the app ...but not touching my Iphoto for 5 days is not practical Jim

Amazing! 12,500 photos dating back to 2001 in iPhoto, some of them quadruples for unknown reason, many double. It ran for 6 hours. 5,600 duplicates were found, saving precious 1.65 GB HD space and countltess hours of cleaning by hand. Good, useful piece of software. Both thumbs up.

Very nice application. Found 543 duplicates in a library of 5500, marked the duplicates as such and originals as such. This allows you to compare photos before deleting. Worth every penny at $7.95.

I tried the demo, realized it worked great for the 500 photos that it will search... but I had just under 6000 photos to search so i purchased the program. There are still a few dupes left, but worth the 8 bucks to buy.
