Mail Checker is a very simple dashboard widget that displays the number of unread messages in your Gmail or Yahoo! mail account. As you can see it takes the form of a British postage stamp. The stamp will turn red when you have mail waiting - the number will also increase to display the number of unread messages. Clicking on the stamp will open your mail inbox in your default web-browser. If you have more than one account then just add more copies of the widget to your dashboard. I used to use this app until a few years ago, and it was reliable for a time until it broke for some reason; perhaps due to a Mac OS X update. I am really not sure.

At any rate, being as it is now easy to set up a Gmail account and a Yahoo account in Apple Mail, this app has become redundant for me personally, and is no longer necessary. With Apple Mail, I easily check my Gmail and Yahoo accounts every 15 minutes.

This widget does work, but it also exposes your password. (Click the widget and it will open up a Web browser view with a &Passwd= GET value revealed in plain text.) This is a major security vulnerability. Do not use this widget.

i'm using it for yahoo! mail and so far it works very good. the only 'but' is that it displays the number of Bulk mail when Inbox is zero.

thanks for the widget!

Actually I like this widget better than the Gmail Inbox widget for several reasons. It has all the features of GM Inbox, but is a nicer interface and takes up less space. Plus, when you activate dashboard, it runs a little circle in the corner to show you it's checking the mail, something that GM Inbox doesn't do. I've switched from Inbox to Checker, and I'm very happy with it. I can just click on it and it takes me directly to my GMail account inbox. Very convenient.

Why not just get your gmail with Mac Mail? Will display how many you have unread.

Mail.app uses much more resources than a widget does. Also, I really don't see the point in saving my email from gmail on my hard drive. That's the whole point in having such a large amount of space on gmail.

I just manually checked my Yahoo mailbox, and there was this HUGE backlog of unanswered mail going back weeks and weeks. This widget just plain doesnt work on my iMacIntel.
