ISOlator makes an exact copy of CDs, DVDs, or other Volumes. It also converts DMG files into ISOs.

If you want to protect the expensive, original CDs you buy, don't want to carry arround your DVDs, or need a way to get that Linux CD back into a burnable format, this program will do the trick. Just drop a CD, DVD, USB Memory stick, or other Volume on ISOlator, and it will produce a perfect replica for you.

If you've downloaded or created a DMG file and need to share or access it on non Apple systems, ISOlator can convert the DMG into an ISO. You can then burn this

The Web site is still available; I was able to load it from our link at the top of the page. And the software is still available for download.

On the other hand, the developer states on his site that the software is no longer under development, nor is it being supported.

This being a free download the least I can do is praise the developer for a clean and very useful app. Most of the time you can do what this app does with Disk Utility and a few extra clicks, but ISOlator is cleaner and faster. Then you run across an old volume or CD that nothing in OSX, not DU and not even Terminal, can copy properly, and that's when you know ISOlator deserves nothing less than five stars.

I googled "ISOlator.dmg" and found it on some mirror in Poland.

I've since mirrored it here.

Works great. Directions are simple, but do read them.

This was the only program that allowed me to back up my GPS DVDs where others failed.

I am running OSX 10.4

It won't let me mount the dmg file.

Reason: Not recognised.

This is a wonderfully effective, simple to use program. Just open the program and drag the disc icon onto the window, and it creates a perfect copy in ISO format. The only thing I would ask for in a future version would be a progress bar so the user knows how much longer the task will take. Nonetheless, this is an invaluable tool that will forever be in my applications folder.

The link seems to be broken. I couldn't download or open the developer's webpage. (using Safari, Firefox and Opera on 10.4.1, 06/27/05, 12:55PM PST)

Ah, what I would have given for this last week, when I needed to send a project CD from a Mac to a PC client. I ended up re-ripping it on a PC just to get the standard ISO format.

The interface could definitely use work, however. The icon is of a document (which is always a no-no and confusing), and the application itself still has traces of "About Application" and other unfinished business. I'd also recommend adding a "Open" and "Save" menu items if people would rather use that than drag and drop.

I tried to convert a mounted CD to an ISO - ISOlator gave an Applescript error and left the system thinking there was nothing in the drive, even though the CD was still inside. I had to reboot to get it back!

(for those in the same situation, try opening Terminal and typing 'disktool -e disk1' first - may save you a reboot :)

Note: ISOlator is built for PowerPC processors, and should work with versions of Mac OS X up to Mac OS X 10.6.8. It is no longer being actively developed.
