Overview

Word Counter Widget is a Dashboard widget for Mac OS X. It provides word counts and character counts and can also count the number of instances of a specified word or phrase. It has several customizable options, including:

Counting all words or only words above a specified length
Counting all characters or all characters without spaces
Counting hyphenated words as a single word or as separate words
Counting text instances in a case-sensitive or case-insensitive manner

Most helpful

At first I was really excited, but then I realized that you had to paste the document into the widget to get the counts. Not really helpful, especially considering that most documents that would require a word count will be too large for this widget to effortlessly handle.

Unfortunately for the creator of this widget, the same functionality is built right into OS X. Simply select text in your open document then go to (Program Name)/Services/Statistics in the menu where (Program Name) is the program you are using. Where this widget can be helpful is if you are using a non-services compliant program.

It's useful when you want to post a comment or opinion with limited character length, for example BBC Website. I particularly don't need it for any other thing. For that it works very well. I'd prefer it to count directly from clipboard or just on selected text on the applications, but it's OK for me. Thanks.

Actually, concerning the stalling noted above. It seems like there was either just a one time error or a goof on my part. Works fine with large text (tried Crime and Punishment and a research report). Def. going up on the widget bar!
