Widget to quickly open Apple apps.

Overview

Quickly open any Apple application...

A slick little utility that allows you to access any Apple application, by simply typing its name (no spaces) in the search field. Soon, this widget will include auto-completion of typing, as well as support for opening third-party applications and customizing where it looks for applications.

Ever heard of Spotlight? (or Quicksilver, or Lauchbar, or Butler, or...)

Completely unnecessary. We already have Quicksilver, Launchbar, etc. They do what this kind of app should do -- pop up one small input area, return results (if necessary). I use Quicksilver for this kind of function, and I probably invoke it several hundred times per day. I only invoke Dashboard a dozen times. Add the delay time of waiting for Dashboard to load and manually (with the mouse) clicking Opener -- you get the point. It completely defeats the purpose of having a super fast, keyboard only entry mechanism.

No list of search results? Useless. I prefer not having to type the entire name of an app/file to locate it, thusly we have spotlight and other search/launch services. If it displayed a list of search results, then it'd be great.

Tomis, As stated in the release notes, this widget is only in its first release. In upcoming releases, it will include features similar to your request.

I don't like the name. Opener is a trojan found last year..... I prefer Spotlight. I can't rate this app though, cos I not even download it.

I apologize for the possibly ill-used naming convention ... it is likely that I will change it. As for the "can't rate this app though, cos I not even download it", I am not sure what the problem is. I have successfully downloaded the same file from both MacUpdate.com and DRAStudio.com. You may want to also try downloading it from Apple's Dashboard site (it will probably be posted 6/9/05).

I think he was saying he wouldn't download it until the name was changed...or something.

Isn't there a Trojan called 'Opener'?

1. I have heard of Spotlight, and I like/use it. But the difference between directly opening an Apple app (nice and quick) and having to search for it (which requires caching the list each time ... and for those with less than spacious amounts of RAM, this is helpful). 2. I like the Dock too, but sometimes I prefer to not stuff it full of every app on my machine ... which by the way, I have seen the Dock support more than 500 items! 3. It is Widget Mania! and this was a fun way to get involved. 4. I don't know anything about a Trojan named 'Opener', but I am glad to hear that Apple is adding higher security settings for installing widgets in the 10.4.2 update.

I agree with the developer here. It is the time when everyone is writing Widgets, and it is a way to learn. If you don't like it you don't have to use it. I wasn't picking on you about the name 'Opener', but people might be shy about downloading it if they associate it with the trojan.
