Widget that searches Google Maps.

Overview

This is a Google maps standalone viewer.

It is currently in alpha stage, since there is one major bug - it will not show the content in the popup pin windows (this is a known incompatibility between Google Maps standalone and Safari - I am in the process of re-writing all my code to fix this). There is a second, minor bug as well - dragging on the map only works after viewing the flipside of the widget at least once

Other then this, everything should work - though of course, it is a work in progress, and comments are welcome.

Many thanks to the people at mygmaps.com, for their hard work in pioneering google map hacking.

future plans for this widget include a pop-out sidebar for directions support, support for loading your own xml/xsl mapping files, support for google's satellite maps (this is already done, just not enabled), and, if I can pull it off, pulling terraserver satellite mapping data into this widget - allowing better resolution, though with older photographs, for the satellite view.

Latest release is hogging memory (several hundred MB). Showing up in Activity Monitor as not responding. Tried closing widget within Dashboard, but still showed in Activity Monitor. Force quit and relaunched. Same thing. Deleted this widget. I hope you can fix it soon, as it's one of my favorite widgets. Thanks!

Sorry bout that folks, my site has been down for this last weekend till now as I was dooing some much needed upgrades (from Redhat 2.0/mips to NetBSD/cobalt-mips 2.0.2). The site is back up now, and should be faster and more stable.

Okay, I've tried it. Functionally, it does what it does well...but it's not very pretty. While I'd like to see directions, I'd prefer it go one step further by adding the ability to find a map listing of the item currently selected in either the address book or the yellow pages widgets--or, use both for directions. Finally, I believe Google (and NAVTEQ) would frown on the copyright info being cut off. I think that should be fixed--it's only fair since you're using their service. One issue, the popup bubble has no data in it. I'm not sure if that's a problem with the address I entered, or the widget itself.

The popup bubble issue is the "pin-popup" bug I mentioned. It is going to be fixed - it is in fact my top priority. It is actually a known issue between GMaps standalone mode and the webkit/safari. As for the copyright, I did not plan on cutting it off, and I think you are right - it should be shown. Not too sure about the integration with the phonebook/yellowpages, though it is possible, but I DO plan on making it so the sidebar can display clickable pins, that go to the points you have on the map - the sidebar will not just be for driving directions

Other than the basic map functionality working. It would be great if the widget was live re-sizable. Keep up the good work!

um - this widget does not "work with" a browser - it is totally self contained
