Aquamacs overview

Aquamacs is the Emacs editor that Mac users love. Aquamacs lets you write text from LaTeX manuscripts to to-do lists, from C to Cobol, Java, Python, Shell-script, Lisp, everything! Aquamacs looks and behaves like other Mac programs - even though it's still the powerful GNU Emacs with all the extensibility that millions have come to appreciate.

Emacs is a text editor of legendary power and configurability, but it also has a complex user interface that is very, very different from the familiar Mac way of doing things. Aquamacs tames the Emacs tiger: you get standard Apple shortcuts (in addition to the Emacs ones), nice fonts, tabs or one file per window, international input methods, Apple Help manuals and more. Aquamacs comes with a range of modes for various markup and programming languages: HTML, C/C++, Java, Python, Perl, AppleScript, Tcl, XML, R (S)... These modes have extra functions for the languages, including excellent syntax highlighting. You can even use Aquamacs to read news and e-mail, just like any Emacs.

Note: While the software is classified as free, it is actually donationware. Please consider making a donation to help support development.

What’s new in version 3.6

Updated on May 29 2023

  • This release has fixes for many of the reported crashes and other bugs, particularly for crashes on Catalina and Big Sur. Aquamacs now prompts for needed permissions. The Aquamacs app is now fully signed and notarized by Apple. Several of the bundled Emacs Lisp packages have been updated to more recent versions, most notably AUCTeX.
  • This version also include native support for libxml2 as well as JPEG and SVG images.
  • This release is compiled to run on any Mac OS version from El Capitan (10.11) forward.
  • Aquamacs 3.6 is compiled only for the x86 architecture. It seems to run fine on Apple Silicon system with Rosetta. There are changes needed to the core Emacs code for it to work on Apple Silicon, so native support will come with a future version (more on that below).

When version 3 will be ready? Common Emacs 24 got its 24.2 upgrade and Aquamacs still cannot go to version 3?

My Aquamacs is stuck in fullscreen mode. I clicked the arrows at the right end of the window's title bar, and it went fullscreen; but mousing to the top of the screen doesn't bring the arrows back. Even when I quit and restart Aquamacs, it's now permanently fullscreen; there doesn't seem to be a way to turn it back into a window. The online help has nothing about this.

Features: > it also has an enormously complex interface LOL, oh man.. that gave me a chuckle. I know what they are trying to say.. but... Sigh... when programmers handle copy, it's funny.

Great for those who love emacs but need some Aqua integration (more than say Fink could give you)... You either love it or hate it, but emacs is a powerful editor/environment.

The usability is very nice. It contains all of unix emacs along some mac/cocoa improvements. However the speed is horrible. Compared to the unmodified emacs and also textmate it takes ages to load, especially if you pick your own color profile. You would think that cocoa would make it more "native" and thus faster, but this is not the case. I deleted all my preferences and still the startup time is ridiculous on a macbook pro. For someone who does a lot of small edits this is not very practical. For this and also the bundles I switched to textmate.

Note: This is a preview version. We regularly maintain and recommend version 1.9 for mission-critical use. The correct version name of this is "2.0preview3".

I started coding three years ago and although I had heard of emacs I have never used it. I have tried to learn VI but I found it very hard to learn and not user-friendly at all. When I first started coding on my Mac I was advised to try BBedit, it's not free but it's the best editor I have ever tried. They have a free tuned-down version called TextWrangler and it works very well. I would recommended it to anyone interested in a free text editor for OS X. I paid £25 for a licence of BBEdit and it's probably the best spent of all my software purchases. It's not the best looking software for the mac but it's very stable, fast and has all the features I need as web, software and game developer.

Good app! I use it for Latex and Python. However, poor at Python, so plug-in needed. I hope Python can be enhanced in this app:) Thx!

Want to check out our latest work? Download a nightly build of the new 2.0 branch, which is based on Cocoa and Emacs 23. It's far from perfect yet, but already quite usable: http://aquamacs.org/nightlies.shtml

If you're on a PPC Mac and you downloaded 1.6preview4 on Monday Dec 29, you may encounter a problem with the Finder refusing to run Aquamacs ("not for this architecture"). We've fixed this - just download again. If you're not on PPC, there is no need to download it again.

Aquamacs has become a really mature Emacs for OS X; the balance between Mac usability and Emacs power is near-perfect. If you've never used any Emacs before, this is the best way to get to know it. If you have used Emacs before, this is the best Mac distribution.

First off: No, it is not a beautiful Cocoa editor. It isn't supposed to be. It is supposed to be a Mac version of emacs that doesn't require X11 and integrates a bit better with the system -- And it does that. Very solid documentation, good stability, lots of included packages, good concept, and a wonderful implementation.
