GIMPshop389

05 June 2006

Photoshop-style version of GIMP.

Overview

Note: GIMPshop is no longer under development and the developer provides no support for it.

GIMPshop is a Gimp modification that features menu layouts, dialogs and naming conventions similar to those found in Adobe Photoshop. Photoshop users should feel right at home using Gimpshop. The Gimp, on which Gimpshop is based, is a powerful, open-source image editing application. For more info on the Gimp see this page. Gimpshop is essentially the same program with some cosmetic changes.

What's new in GIMPshop

Note: Although Finder indicates that this is version 389, the developer states that this is version 2.2.11

This app does not currently work under Snow Leopard 10.6.3/X11 2.3.5. It attempts to cache fonts and then crashes.

Forget Gimpshop under Leopard for the time being. It crashes every time. Ironically, this is actually an improvement, as since Leopard/X11 change, it wouldn't even launch except for parking its icon in the dock. I blame this on the new X11 as included in Leopard. Just got (finally) the 2.4 PPC version of Gimp running on my 1.2ghz iBook after the 10.5.2 and x.org X11-1.2.4 updates, so I will be using that while I watch for a Leopard-usable version of Gimpshop, hopefully based on the 2.4.x Gimp. Apple doesn't appear to have done a whole lot to assure X11 functionality under 10.5.2. Guess they expect you to spend $600 for P-shop. Ain't happenin'...

After 'caching fonts...' for awhile, it states that "Gimp-2.2 has unexpectedly quit". I've heard that this has to do with Leopard's new X11 implementation, to which a solution is posted at: http://www.x.org/wiki/XDarwin I must be mucking something up though, since it still gives me the same error afterwords. Running Gimpshop 2.2.11 and Leopard 10.5.1 on a mac book pro duo.

Try LiveQuartz http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/18064 More more Mac OS X. If you need a more complete Photoshop like, then try Pixel (not free) http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/18055/pixel

Over more than one year ago I sent a suspicious Photoshop 6 copy I acquired at *B*y to Adobe, because they claimed this kind of copies are illegal. Neither got my CD back nor any response since, it's a pity. Therefore I used legal PSE 2 and 3, and with the Earthbound light extension it still works fine for me. Gimpshop is a big step forward, the most shortcuts for tools working exacly like in PS and PSE for MS-Windows because the command-key is at the control-key. On my 1.2 Ghz G4 with 1.2 GB RAM Gimpshop works fast and stable and the best news is the brand-new free UFRaw plugin: http://ufraw.sourceforge.net/Install.html#Mac Although Mac Gimpshops development has a delay compared to the Linux version, it's a very good tool for private use and we can really look forward to the plugins like Refocus, Wideangle Lens, CMYK - and maybe someone who will spent some work on this somewhat elaborate interface. Gimpshop didn't replaced my PSE yet but I'm working on it. Thank you very much!

This is being written with only about 15 minutes of experience with the app. Seems to run very well on my Intel iMac (early 2006). Don't see any "RAW" support but I've not read the docs at all and I should RTFM before complaining, right? I like the Photoshop key equivalents; If I'm going to learn something beyond iPhoto, it might as well have a similar-to-PS UI, right? I ran the "yellow cursor" fix before running anything; can't say whether I had the problem or not before - never saw it in other X11 apps. re: Copying between the app and OSX clipboard - very nice. I'll try to learn more and post a review soon. At first blush, however, maybe I don't even need Photoshop? :D

i love the idea of an open source "photo shop" like program....but where and how do i effin import stuff? i'm a computer illiterate, far from it...i use to fix lap tops for a living, but like most linux type things...you don't give much help to us "point" and "clickers." i will go all out on it once i figure out how to import all my pictures in it, but if i can't figure it out i doubt any new-b will be able to. we are spoiled from "brose button" and "import buttons" some one drop me a line my email is "hisroyalsexiness@hotmail.com"

Downloaded GIMPShop + X11 from macupdate.com X11 says 'You cannot install X11 on this volume. Newer Software already exists on your computer.' GIMPShop [version 2b] says 'Failed to start X11. Gimp.app requires Apple's X11' Running OS X 10.4.2. Help! What gives?

This is a great drawing, painting and image manipulation prgram. The progam is an X11 program so some of the keyboard shortcut are different but, most are simply ?Key switched to control key menus are positioned at the top of window not the screen .Their are tons of tools, filters and other goodies all great. The price is also perfect $0.Sadly i dont use GIMP anymore the Photo Shop torrent i was using finished...Kidding!?

I found that the interface is difficult to use. If you can add Themes to it maybe it could be better. Enjoy the fact that there is such a thing out there. Tho it would be better if you diden't have to use the X11 interface. I hope that if you continue this development that you can somehow keep it under 100.00 dollars or less. I know I would be willing to buy a copy if it is price like that. Photoshop has all the bells and whistles but I don't always need ALL the bells and whistles. Maybe if you have a way to edit photos for joe's out there but then there is the professional version. Thanks

This is pretty much the only workable alternative to Photoshop for me (although somewhat limited). It a very powerful programme, but it being X11 etc. it still doesn't feel close an OS X application. There's got to be some way to change those shortcuts to COMMAND+KEY rather than CONTROL+KEY, (tried it for now X11 doesn't seem to recognize the command key. I can live with X11, but the biggest drawback for me is that my Japanese input is simply gone there, and so I can't fully use GIMPshop for many things I'd like to use it for...

I've been hankering for a free, powerful PS-like program for years and GIMPshop fits the bill perfectly. Yes it's a little rough around the edges but free free free free free. Also, free.

Impossible to untar. It took me an infinite amount of time to untar the file (using Stuffit Delux). In fact, being sure it won't open at all, I have chosen to take a short walk and was quite amazed to recover the lost dmg file upon returning home. I have not tested it yet, but I like very much the underlying idea and the efforts.

I, too, hope to see this evolve to something more like NeoOffice, an OpenOffice build that runs in the native Mac OS environment without X11. However, I am also hopeful that the new Core Image functionality in OS X.4 (Tiger) will enable new contenders to take on Photoshop with a fully Cocoa product.

Make it Cocoa...COCOA....as with Adobe Photoshop's new "verification" there is now a real need for Gimp to be developed Native in Mac OS X. Let's get on with this already......PLEASE!!!

Downloaded ok, installed ok. Experienced the very long initial bootup, followed by a series of questions to personalize the installation. Followed the "read me" exactly. Upon initial activation, received two "toolboxes" on the screen, but no GIMPshop menus at top of window. Closed out, restarted the software. Not able to get menus, "toolboxes" no longer appear, nothing. Tried this on 3 separate computers with OSX. Nothing appears except the name GIMP in the menu bar, but no menus.

I am a long time photoshop user who has for a long time been trying to switch to the GIMP, but I have always found it to cumbersome. It slowed me down way to much. WIth this version, it seems to finally make sense. tools work like you would expect. Menus have structure. I can't justify purchasing photoshop after giving this a whirl. -As for it crashing on startup: It takes a long time to load the first time. It is setting up your system. Just walk away for a few minutes and come back.
