Bits on Wheels1.0.6

19 November 2005

Bittorrent client.

Overview

Bits on Wheels is the first 100% Native BitTorrent client for the Mac. It is completely written in Objective-C and Cocoa. It is also the first client to show a realtime 3D view of your downloads.

Please visit the Forums for all your technical questions, suggestions, bug reports. Don't forget to check out the often-updated 'News' page too !

What's new in Bits on Wheels

Version 1.0.6:

New:

  • You can now click and rotate/move/zoom the 3D Swarm view ! Use the command/option/control keys while dragging to move/zoom/rotate the view.
  • new 3D Swarm representation : Vertical Race ! Peers start at the bottom and raise up as they complete a torrent.
  • new 3D tools palette lets you rotate and zoom the 3D view. 3D Options have been moved there.
  • IP addresses can now be selected and copied to the clipboard, inside the Peers view.

Fixes:

  • endgame was so-so in 105 and seems to be real nice now.
  • when rechecking hash, the available pieces weren't re-sorted resulting in 0 piece being downloaded.
  • crash when updating the validated graph.
  • removed a couple deadlocks.
  • crash in race condition.
  • visual artefacts while checking hash in 3D swarm view.
  • tidying up multi-threading.
  • Memory leak when stopping torrents. Another leak with outgoing connexions.
  • Better Peer handshaking when peer has 0 piece available.
  • Most Panther crashes.
  • Many fixes here and there.

Mods:

  • modified the pieces ring in the 3d view to be more accurate.
  • changed the amount of requested pieces to avoid stalling.

Known Problems:

  • Panther only : BoW seems to be incompatible with some APE modules.

Its a shame development of this client seems to have stalled. The 3D Seed/Leech view was badass. Personally, I switched to Transmission.

_ Bummer. I used to follow this closely but the project appears to be COMPLETELY DEAD as of late 2005. Even the forum went south, and this thing is still awfully feature shy and more flash than function. For me this is still not all that stable and with no work being done, it isn't going to get better. I'll stick to Azureus which although a bit bloated, gets the job of downloading done fast. It has WRONGLY been said Azureus is somehow not free or has advertising! Asureus 3.x with the VUSE GUI has advertising, but it's ALL still FREE and OPEN SOURCE. Vuse (zudeo) content may have DRM, but the GUI can be turned off to leave Azureus working and behaving like 2.x versions and all code is still under the GPL and actively developed. NOTE: I HAVE ZIPPO TO DO WITH THE AZUREUS PROJECT. I was disturbed when VUSE showed up when i upgraded a few days ago. I simply found the details in the WIKI, including how to turn Vuse off. .

Didn't crash for 3 or 4 nights (and days)! In my configuration it is stable as a rock! And it really works fine. With other clients I often see that u/l and d/l rates decrease (to zero) and only a restart of those programs helps. Tomato Torrent doesn't work with multi file downloads (a 100 files in one torrent) and Azureus is nothing more than a big advertisment show... :-( The only free bittorrent client that works really good for me is Bits on Wheels! I like the statistics and the file view in it!

Well, it's alright compared to others. It crashes when you got a lot of files going in it. When you go to stop one file, it stops the one above it, and if you do this a few times in a long list, it just up and crashes. This behavior is very consistent. Hasn't been updated in a LONG time and needs to be. Could stand to have the ability to download individual files within a torrent, badly needs that feature.

Best mac Bittorrent Client! One would think with all of the wonderful interface elements that this would be a resource hog. NOT AT ALL! Extremely low memory/process usage even through rosetta! I'm impressed and will never use another client. Can't wait for the Universal Binary version!

I am absolutely blown away. Best BitTorrent client for Mac OS X, hands down. The 3D Swarm and Pieces views are impressive; Gives you all the information you could ever need at your finger tips, Great performance, very stable, dosen't crash or seem to have memory leak issues, like some other clients. Now we just need a Universal version for our MacTel brethren.

this is my favorite and chosen client. native in cocoa. i find it fast and simple to use. but the killer feature is the 3d visualization of the torrent environment: a huge help in understanding how torrents work and how you're interacting with your peers and seeders. I wish it had more features though. I hope some more updates are on the way.

This app runs for only 20 mins before it freezes. It struggles to cope with 3-4 simultanious downloads. Freezes require a 'force quit' & restart everytime, meaning I loose my upload credits/ratings etc. Needs to be more reliable. Other than that, it has potential.

By far the best client out there - it is fast, it has a LOT of features you won't find anywhere else and best of all: it's free! Since it reports all the stats properly to the tracker (at least in my case), Bits of wheels is my first choice when it comes to sharing torrents. But beware: downloading and uploading can become very addicting, since BoW has by far the most exciting statusbar options I've ever seen (the 3D wheel ist just one of them). It's just a little feature that I miss within BoW: The possibility to prevent clients with bad hash checks from further uploading - This can lead to quite huge amounts of waste of bandwith and time in worst case... Therefore BoW gets an overall 5 star rating from me ecxept for stability. ...and a big THANX for developing this program for free - keep up the good work! Sonofwilmot

"You and several other people are having trouble finishing torrents. It's always the exact same byte count no matter which one, so apparently BOW is buggy. I just thought I'd give you warning, since you show up in my logs when BOW misbehaves." That's the message I got off the admin of the site I use telling me they're banning BOW again... aaaaaaargh! Bits On Wheels is by far the best client out there - can you please fix it?

I'd like to add something. Instead of one global bandwidth and peer settings that you offer in preferences, it would be logical to follow this with implementing a bandwidth setting and peer selection on an individual torrent basis Thanks

THANK YOU! Since I ventured to try this app earlier today, I have deleted both Tomato Torrent and Transmission. Bits has allowed me to finally download files that were sitting idly or with errors on those previous apps for well over a week. Bits on Wheels is now my exclusive bittorrent client; it's fast, it's stable, it's OS native, and it looks nice. Thanks. One suggestion though: change the image you use for the "screenshot"--it's deceiving. I've previously been dissuaded from trying this app because I was inaccurately led to believe it was some stupid 3D bittorent client that is all about style and not substance. Boy was I wrong, but I now wish that the screenshot was of the actual business end of the app, not just one of its many features.

I'd like to thank everyone who reviewed this app. All those nice comments are really comforting, really. It means I'm not working for nothing. And for those who complain about the default folder, it will be in the todo list for 1.0.7. One word about the low ping rate when bow is running. My guess is that you set the upload limit a bit too high, so your upload is saturated and pings take more time to come back. Try reducing the upload and see what happens. (1-2KB might do it). thanks again to you all ^_^

Is anyone else getting really high network latency when running this app? If I ping apple.com while BoW is running, my response times are usually ~2000ms. If I quit BoW, they drop off to a more acceptable ~90ms. If I run the 'regular' BitTorrent client (4.1.2), my ping times don't go up much if at all. I love this app, but that kind of latency makes other network activity a real drag. Developer, any ideas?

Not bad. Far too complicated and cluttered window for my liking. More information than I would need. Also for some reason download speeds are slow. Ok, the 3d rendering is nice.....but come on, get the basics right before making pretty displays. I think I'll stick to azureus for now....simple, clean, INTUITIVE and does the job FAST!

I have still hope for this program. Tomato is too simple and Azureus is terrible complicated. For very large files, Azureus is unfortunately the best with the ability of downloading any file with priority management. Apart from that, Azureus has always quicker download rates than any other bittorent program. But as I said, BoW has got the best interface and still in development.

great torrent program. i would like the option to select the files i'm downloading- for batch torrents. i used to use bitcomet on windows and the best thing was that you can actually choose what files you want to download. this gives more flexibility to the user. other than that..great work. keep it up.

Thank-you for a very good alternative! I have had to switch from my standards (azureus and bit torrent) for a number of reasons; regardless I did not have much hope for a while, since, they had performed well until serious flaws revealed themselves, and nothing else seemed to offer good peformance with reasonable options. Until now. This is the nicest "little" torrent app out there right now. I suggest people give it a chance and support it's development. And please, don't demand it become bloatware!

Very nice, but one feature I'd like to see added is the option to automatically move completed downloads to a different folder. Preferably the folder to move to would be settable on a per torrent basis, or perhaps dependent on the kind of download. Such a feature would allow for automated conversion of downloaded video for the iPod. The program MoviesForMyPod (previously MoviesToGo) has a watch folder option, so I'd want Bits to put completed video downloads into its watch folder, which would result in them then being automatically converted into iPod compatible format. Azureus does this, of course, but Azureus is so, so painfully slow. Not to mention the incredibly klunky interface. So I'd really like to use Bits on Wheels or Transmission, but neither has this auto-moving capability.

This program is great I always wanted someone to create a cocoa version of azureus but this would do just fine. Low cpu usage, low memory usage, mac os x style interface. It does have a few bugs which can be worked out so people who complain or having problems just remove the preference file and restart that's all it takes.

This program is amazing. It takes up very little processor time, 40-50MB of RAM when very busy, is very stable, and loves to do what it does. Very easy to use, simple, intuitive interface. I can stare at the 3D Swarm for hours. It's an interesting thing to watch. Comprehensive and simple (but complete) preferences, including max upload rate, max uploade rate settings for new torrents, max up and down connections, easy file lists, and so on. This has, with one use, become the only torrent client I'll ever need. Beautiful, stable, simple, light.. this one's a winner. You owe yourself to give it a try if you ever, even ONCE, want to use Bit Torrent. You definitely can't beat the price. fabian@stny.rr.com

This program is great! For some reason, it connects to more peers and has faster downloads for me than Azureus does. The only things better about Azureus than this are 1. Azureus splits up seeding files and downloading files into two windows 2. Azureus has that little config that tells you if your port is open. SO if you know how to forward ports already or don't need to, and if you don't mind the seeds and downloads in the same window, then Bits on Wheels is your program. :)

While this works very well on Tiger most of the time, it seems to freeze up at random. No data moving, no response to the mouse, and tagged as "Not responding" in the Force Quit Applications dialog. It doesn't happen very often, but seems to be more frequent as you use it more.

This is by far the best torrent client I have found for Mac OS X. BitTorrent, the most popular client has less features and uses MORE CPU. I think that the interface could be improved, it uses a lot of screen space at the moment - But its not a major problem. This program gives you lots of details on torrent files, such as the pieces completed, files within the torrent, and an interesting "3D Swarm" feature. The price is right, there are plenty of features, its fast and doesn't use a lot of CPU ! I recommend this to any serious torrent user. Well done to the developer, Keep up this great work!

Interesting, but it seems to have a real problem. Maybe it's just me. I found that torrents would come to perhaps 97% and then die. The upload would keep on going, but the download would drop to nothing. I don't know if it's a hash failure problem (not sure why it would be-the download is zero, so there's no data coming in so...) or what. I look at the 3D view and 100% of the seeds and all but a couple peers are in the red zone. If it happened with just one torrent, I could tolerate it. But it's happened with every torrent I've tried. Oh well, back to Azureus.

Awesome client, downloads torrents quick and has a beautiful user interface. Frequently gets stuck for many hours waiting on the last peice of a torrent. For example my last download sat at 99.9% with 512KB to finish for about 15 hours, I stopped and restarted it a few times over that period, then gave up and used Tomato Torrent to finish up, which took 47seconds. Once this and the occasional crashes that happen are fixed I'll have no need for a backup client on my system.

Loved the previous versions, but PR1.3 and PR1.4 (or whatever the two most recent versions were) randomly freeze on me, especially when clicking on different torrents in the list. Using Mac OS X 10.3.9 on a G4/400.

to developer.... just a little suggestion... many times i use the "update" button to sync my download with the tracker server, but the "remove" button is soooooo close and, in some cases, i push this button and my current selected torrent simply dissapear from the GUI... maybe a little "are you sure to remove this torrent?" warning window will be great!! ...and we have the opportunity to "cancel"... THANX

Even with Version before the CPU usage was very little. Bittorrent uses more and has not so great visualisation (3D Swarm). Bittorrent uses up to 80% CPU at the first 20 Sec of start. This app is much faster at startup and little faster at work. GREAT APP !!!

In my opinion, this is hands down the best torrent client for the Mac. Highly recommended.

2 features needed to make me switch from azureus: 1. ability to set download limit 2. watch a folder for .torrent files and open/start them when found.

Well, as I posted earlier today, the previous version released earlier today worked fine on my 900MHz G3 iBook (10.3.9) This newer version also works fine.

Cool App in 10.3. I like the 3D view alot, although its got some perspective issues. But, doesn't matter now, as this app doesn't work under 10.4, which means I'm stuck using Tomato Torrent. :-(

I can't resume downloads if I close Bits On Wheels and reopen it. It just don't want to open the .torrent files.

Finally someone has stepped up and given us an excellent torrent application, a sensible layout, great features and without python underneath. This will surely become the most popular client. Awesome, Keep up the fantastic work.
