BloglinesMenu does "exactly what it says on the tin" as the long-running and somewhat self-parodic UK TV advert has it: it sits in the Menu Bar, and tells you how many unread items you have in your Bloglines subscribed feeds. Unpack the archive and put it in your Applications folder; optionally set it as a startup item in your Account preferences, and run it. The first time you do this, a preference pane appears where you can supply the email account under which you subscribe to Bloglines, and how often (in seconds) you want it to check for new unread messages. Two ticky-boxes allow additional alert notifications to be sent using Growl and the system beep. Clicking the number in the menu bar shows a small menu letting you open bloglines at your feeds page, or force an immediate check of unread items (for use when those deadlines are staring you in the face and you need to displace right now). The next two entries show the preference pane again and the About window with developer and collaborator information. And that's it. Like all good software, it does one thing and does it well with the minimum of fuss; and like all good Mac software, It Just Works™.

The new BloglinesMenu 1.3 is great. It now has a "snooze" function that allows you to push Bloglines notification out of your way for a set length of time if you need to get something done. The default display for snoozing is "Z", but it can be set to display as zero instead in case Z just taunts you to manually check. It also will Auto-Snooze, and jump directly into Snooze mode if you choose "Open Bloglines." This keeps you from having to read all your items and then "Check Now" just to make the menu display as zero. All in all, a very worthwhile update.
