Search interface for OS X Address Book.

Overview

TapDex gives you a quick and simple search interface to your Mac OS X's Address Book. Tap the hot key and up pops a search window, start typing to narrow down your search.

TapDex is small, fast and takes up very little resources. It is designed to run in the background (yes, it can run without a Dock icon) and activated with a hot key. Customize it to auto-launch on log in and all your Address Book contacts will always be one tap away!

TapDex is pure magic. It is my most useful utility to find urls, emails, names, email addresses, phone numbers... Hit F1 and a floating interface appears, type some characters of your contact, hit go. Return/Enter and a number of similar names appears. You scroll down arrow to see the Contact you want. It shows TEL numbers and some truncated information. Dismiss by returning to your 'document'. If required you than launch Address Book. BUT you don\t have to load Address Book for a simple query. I use TapDex daily, it is one of my most useful, nay essential 'add-ons' 3-cheers to Yellow Mug, thanks guys. A winner and it's FREE - press F1 and save yourself a lot of time. Adrien X, UK

TapDex is one of my absolutely essential startup items. I'm sorry to see that YellowMug has abandoned TapDex, but happy to see that it is still available to download here & there on the 'net. I customized my TapDex hotkeys to be Control-Option-A, and I use those keys quite a bit. When an address comes up, you can right-click on various parts of the contact entry to copy the text you've right-clicked on, or open a link in a browser or open a map in a browser when you right-click on a contact's physical address. TapDex is such a fantastic background app to have & use that I am frankly bewildered that YellowMug has abandoned it! Download it.... Install it (it installs as a Preferences Pane)..... Try it... You'll love it. Kevin Kendall

The new TapDex, invoked by easiest of all keystrokes F1, is no better, IT is all GREAT. Sorry for shouting, it's in partial answer to comment near top, Wjb3wvu commented on 15 Jun 2010. How can you comment, especially querulously, dear boy, if you have not downloaded a FREE app? From Launch on Startup TapDex even flashes a screen to remind you of F1. Type in any words you think are in 'A B" entry and you hit Return and tap arrows to go down list to your target. Glad to read most think TapDex is invaluable every day. As long as the person and phone are in Address Book, TapDex finds preliminary info such as Tel and Email. Click another window and TapDex is gone. But of course you will have to wait on Address Book if you want spouse's name and birthdate. On the phone or the wife asks [waltzes-in] for a someone's number I use TapDex and give the info as if by a magician. Please get TapDex. No Mac should be without Yellow Mug’s TapDex. & free. I don't know what the paid Pro version does or if I already paid $4.95 for Pro, the free version just works anyway like magic. NB TapDex is a superlative use of 'tight' code by Jay Teo, the real wizard. Adrien UK

Fantastic app. Use it several times every day. Much more convenient than clumsy Address Book, especially the crippled Lion version.

Great app. Just one regret: the lack of an "add new contact" button.

Excellent app. Just a couple of suggestion: 1. Note field multi line with text wrap 2. Applescript basic support (just to use phone numbers with dial applications, etc.)

I guess I don't really understand this app either. Doesn't the Address Book Dashboard widget do the same thing? Using a hotkey? Just as fast? It does for me.

What am I missing? I'm serious here... how long does it take to open Address Book? One second? How much time can this app save? Admittedly, I have not used the app, but that's because I see no advantage over just opening Address Book. Fill me in.

This is one indispensable app for me. I use it every day. The hot key activation makes all my addresses available instantly. I only have to open Address Book to add or edit.

There are two changes in TapDex 3.3.5. I made a mistake during submission and only one of the changes is listed. Here's the complete change log. - Pressing esc key now hides TapDex instead of clearing the search field. - TapDex now remembers its state across activations. Jay Teo YellowMug.com

I like this app, but unless I'm missing something, it's missing something important -- the ability to copy an addressbook field. (For instance, i like to look up a contact and be able to right-click on part of the entry -- such as an email or street address -- to then paste into another application. There doesn't seem to be any way to do this with this app...

Spotlight doesn't work nearly so well as this little app for quickly finding and displaying contact info. The only thing missing is a quick 'Enter' to go to address book - you have to click on the name instead.

Not to cast aspersions on this product - a product have never used as I use Spotlight for this. Spotlight also works for MS Office (Entourage) and additionally finds all documents associated with the name I type in.

TapDex Pro, that's the $4.95 supplement on free, is in Irish a 'darlin little ting'. Unobtrusively it flashes a momentary reminder 'Activate F1' on Mac startup. And true, F1 brings up a single line entry for name and it rushes off and finds matches. The closer you get to search the name the fewer the number of matches. Hit Enter and a list appears on right panel. A click reveals each match for your choice from your AddressBook. Click on a name and the person's details appear, usually the telephone number you want... but a reminder of all the AddressBook entry... without opening AddressBook. And the window fades on returning to your real work. 'macup' produces Joel Mueller and 'reminds me to erase Bixler McClure' ;-) Adrien, UK

I absolutely love this app. With running a busy creative agency, I don't always have time to shuffle through files to find the telephone numbers that I need right then and there. This handy little utility puts my entire phonebook before me at the touch of a button! Great timesaver! I would recommend it to anyone.

A revelation! A small piece of software, beautifully executed, easy to use, understand, AND helps save time and facilitates workflow. In other words, totally what the Macintosh is supposed to do. I salute the developers. Now, can they possibly make an office suite that we can use instead of Microsoft Office?

This is one of the most under reviewed software. Its functionality and simple use makes this one deserving of an award. It is simply the best of its kind. Nothing can beat it. Thank you for your genius.

QuickSilver does this and so much more. The so much more part can be intimidating but QuickSilver's basic functionality is easy to pick and perfect for looking up contacts and launching applications.

It's a good start but not as reactive as BuddyPop which also offer much more options, like personalize the Address Book fields to display and to search into, call by Skype, send and receive SMS, etc.

Unless I have my Spotlight configured wrong (and I don't think I do).... the only thing I can get to 'pop-up' is the address card from my address book when I type in a name... then I have to click on the persons name next to the card to get their phone number. TapDex does this all in on key-stroke.

But doesn't Spotlight already do this? Just CMD-Space and type in a name, area code, or anything that is in an Address Book record.

Not to knock this, no reason because it works great and is free, but those looking for something similar might want to check out Quicksilver. Does something similar plus a whole lot more and is free as well!!

Version 1 was awesome. Really useful. Version 1.1 is a slug. It takes forever to type the search term in. Type in the first letter and you can't do anything else for about 30 seconds ... please someone sort out this glitch, as it's made a good product unusable.

This is great and very useful! One thing I'd like to see is option to change interface to semi-transparent same as in SizzlingKeys... and one more :) option to set default action for clicking on detail...
