I'm like Brian163: I've had a version of this (very nice freebie!) app since BEFORE OS X! Back in the day, Mac programs like this were the "amaze your (PC) friends" stuff that made them envious you were running a Mac (anyone remember MacPuke? LOL!). I think it's just as cool today as it was DECADES ago!

I love seeing updates for software that is -at least- 16 years old. (My copy of 2.0 is copyright 2004!)

I like TreetopLights more. The settings seem to work better for me on OS X 10.11 and the flying santa and snowmen are fun! https://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/16774/treetoplights

Just installed on 10.10.5 and have it running now. Didn’t look like it was gonna work - I opened & closed it a couple times and the bulbs weren’t showing. Then I remembered this happening last year and I had enable or disable something to make them appear. So I opened the preferences and in the Screen 1 tab changed Bulb Level to Desktop, and voilà! Then I changed Bulb Level back to “float above all” so the bulbs are always visible. Unfortunately for you the dev’s website is dead so you can’t download it. But you may like TreetopLights even better - you get lights AND a tree! Plus the dev’s website is still active, and it also runs on Yosemite. https://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/16774/treetoplights

MacLampsX runs well under OS X 10.6.8 "Snow Leopard". Initially, I had to toggle between a blank playlist and songs that I dragged and dropped from my iTunes library before the audio kicked in. The app default checks a Screen Saver Mode option "Enter screen saver mode only for the MacLampsX Screensaver". I had to uncheck that box before I got the screen saver running. After that, the app began to run flawlessly. For those who go way back with the Mac OS, Classic days, MacLampsX is inspired by Tiger Technologies Holiday Lights program. Tiger Technologies still has a support page that allows users to download the software for Mac OS 9 (PPC) and Windows XP (bulb file archive and programs) but there are no new updates because the company has changed their focus. * This program would be a flawless replacement, except for the fact that it does not appear to import bulb files created for the original application. I hope the developer can release a script that will automate the process of converting the Windows XP or Mac OS 9 bulb archive OR that the MacLampsX program itself can undergo an update that will allow it to import the extensive (exhaustive) collection of original bulbs, screensaver and desktop themes. It is possible, per instructions on the developer website, to design your own bulbs for MacLampsX but it would be that much more appealing if the hundreds of bulbs that already exist could be imported or converted for compatibility. The Tiger Technology archive contained themes covering every conceivable holiday, both religious and secular, including many seasons, hobbies and other interests. If this app can somehow be designed to take advantage of those resources, it would be absolutely perfect. To the developer, should he/she read this: Please gain permission from Tiger Technologies to either officially take after their abandoned app and/or convert their bulb archive for compatibility with this program. Their archive is located at: https://support.tigertech.net/old-software Thank you, ArcticMac, for taking the time to rewrite a piece of Mac classic nostalgia!

Just installed and configured this for the 2012 Christmas season and it's working fine on OS X 10.7.6 Intel 64, so don't let the fact that it hasn't been updated in years scare you off. I've used it for 3 years now and don't recall having any trouble. Adds some cheer to my screen and and it's FREE! There's plenty of options, and it will even snow and play tracks from your iTunes library. Be sure to download the extra bulbs from the dev's website and copy them to the ~/Applications/MacLampsX.app/Contents/Resources folder: http://arcticmac.home.comcast.net/~arcticmac/software/bulbArchive/ You'll also like TreetopLights - I'm running it too. https://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/16774/treetoplights

Very nice programm. I used to have "Holiday Lights" in Mac OS 9 too :) This is ofcourse a beta, but I just wanted to say that I couldn't get the screen saver to work with snow without disabling "Enter Screen Saver mode only for the MacLampsX ScreenSaver", and I tried a lot of stuff. It also doesn't work with "Spaces". I can move it from one space to another by dragging the preferences window from one space to another. Still, really good app :) And brings a good christmas spirit :) Happy christmas to everyone. Or "Go' jul" as we say in Norway :)

I went to set this up for this year and found out that I could no longer install the screen saver. I am using Snow Leopard. How ironic. A screen saver with snow that can't run on SNOW Leopard.

Hi, I have had this recommended to me, but every time I download it, I'm unable to mount the dmg file. I get a warning saying that the disk image failed to mount. I have tried downloading from here and the developer's original site. I am using OS X 4.11 on my PowerPC iBook G4. Thanks
