1.1.4

Backup and restore data on the primary iPod volume.

Overview

PodLock allows users to hide important files by creating an "invisible" partition on their iPod. It's like having a secret drive for your data files that only you can see by entering your personal password. Features include:
  • Create a hidden partition, or area, on the iPod allowing the user to hide important files from prying eyes.
  • Defragment file data on the iPod, improving file retrieval and music access speed.
  • Backup and restore data on the primary iPod volume.
  • Manage pictures and voice recordings, providing an easy and convenient way to access data.
  • Display important and interesting technical information about the iPod, such as where a specific iPod was manufactured.

What's new in PodLock

Version 1.1.4: Added support for Fifth Generation iPod (iPod with video).

Does it work with PC-Formatted iPods? My primary use for my iPod is as a multi-platform hard drive, music is very secondary. However, no iPod apps other than iTunes, seem to work on the Mac side, even the iPod updater refuses to work on mine...

I use an encrypted diskimage (sparseimage) made with Apple's diskutility for my sensitive files. It's safe, it it doesn't take up any unnecessary disk-space unless you remove any files on it (it won't shrink again). In that case you could just make a new one and throw away the old one.

PodLock requires contiguous space twice the size of the largest file fragment in order to operate. This is fine as long as you're not working with a relatively full iPod. Unfortunately, the scenario of a relatively packed iPod is the situation where you need the defrag capabilities of PodLock most. I've freed up 6GB of free space on my iPod and I still can't do anything with PodLock because the space (I assume) is not contiguous. I don't understand why Micromat doesn't use available space on my Mac's drive or on my attached external drive as a temp space for defragmentation. This tool given its limitations is pretty worthless.

Downloaded Podlock with great expectations as I use Techtool and it's a useful and polished product. Sadly, nothing could be further from the truth for Podlock. For this program to work, you must first enable the iPod's disk mode through iTunes. Hardly elegant to have to run two programs just to get started. Of course, you then must then turn this mode off via iTunes when you're finnished using Podlock if you don't want to keep manually unmounting your iPod after a sync. I have an iPod Photo 40G with software version 1.1. Podlock incorrectly identified my version as 1.0. Hardly reassuring. Though Podlock enables you to create a "secret" partition, Podlock does not allow you to back this up to your Mac. While you can perform a basic disk defrag, Podlock performs no optimisation on your disk at all. Most of the functions advertised will only work with a firewire connection. Only got USB? You're out of luck with this product. This is not mentioned - as far as I can tell - anywhere in the documentation and only rears its ugly head when you try to access Podlock's features and you get a warning that you need a firewire connection. As current iPods do not come standard with firewire cables, you must also factor the cost of a firewire cable. This product is expensive for what it does - even more so when you factor in the cost of a firewire cable - and unless you really need a password protected partition on an iPod (are you that paranoid?), its simply not worth the admission price.

Seems they have addressed the crash issue with a new posting of the installer. I downloaded and was able to run the application without issue. I really like the ability of making the data volume, plus the application was smart enough to tell me that I had my silver mini iPod connected. That was cool. Its about time that a third party company make a utility for the iPod.

... seems like a cool idea, however, it will not launch on my machine. I even have a 'standard' user account setup, with no extras of any sort... and it still didn't even launch under that user. oh well.
