Space shoot`em up game.

Overview

Critical Mass (Critter) is an SDL/OpenGL space shoot'em up game. Your world has been infested by an aggressive army of space critters. Overrun and unprepared, your government was unable to defend its precious resources. As a last effort to recapture some of the 'goodies', you have been placed into a tiny spacecraft and sent after them.

This game is challenging and fun. There are a few interface anomalies that I hope the developer fixes eventually. For example, the window can't be moved if the application is in the foreground because the mouse pointer is trapped inside the game window. However, the game itself is great: creative and challenging with fun music and a sense of humour. At the whopping price of 'free' this is a definite 5-star application.

Fun and somewhat addictive game with only one gripe - only one life???!!! Can't possibly see the logic behind the authors' reasoning - besides making the game a lot shorter and more frustrating. Are there just not very many levels to conquer or what? Why else would you be given only a single life to play the game with? Have you ever played a space shooter before? Anyway, the graphics, sound and action are decent and reminescent of galaga or galaxian - from what I could tell after only four or five waves of enemies (thanks to the single life enigma).

Most of the complaints can be rectified by reading the *Mission*. It's only 2 pages of text. Can't be that hard, can it? I won't list all the Mission Tips, since some people like to explore. If you enable vertical movement, it will be harder. If you use the keyboard instead of the mouse to move your ship, it will be much harder. With vertical movement on AND keyboard movement, it's virtually impossible unless you are a keyboard god. As VEGGIEDUDE points out auto fire helps some people. It connects to sourceforge to get the info for the online news scroller. You can disable it in the config menu. If something seems suspicious, ask a developer friend to look over the source code. Rather than all this hate, I'd rather see some constructive feedback or bug reports. To those who do: Thanks! Due to a bug in one of the 3rd party libs, there will be a 1.0.2 forthcoming shortly.

Good arcade game. I had to put it on Rookie and turn on auto shoot and I racked up 21,200 points, lasted about 8 minutes before I finally died, so I don't think the harsh critisism is justified.

Oh and also this game wants to call home to critter wants to connect to this URL: projects.sourceforge.net on TCP port 80 (http) Now why does a freeware game want to track when I launch it? Would the author please comment on WHY?? What is your purpose for this?

fun game, but how FRIGGING LAME of the author to give you just one guy then have enemies shoot directly horizontal on your level with no way to avoid them. I played for all of 2 minutes and died 5 times which means I played 5 games. Author is insane and sadistic, don't bother downloading this, he is probly sitting back knowing exactly what he did and getting pleasure out of posts just like this one.

A promising game, but when the developer has the sick sense of humor to only offer one life on "Rookie" and have a entire fleet kamakazee your ship after beating the first fleet, you know the developer has too much of a snobbish "leet" mentality to hold much promise of this game being a successful "resume piece."

Sorry folks. I don't have a Mac which makes this hard to get right. I've uploaded a new DMG (0.9.10a) which should work out of the box. At least one person has confirmed this... And, yes, there should be no dependency on X11, which was one of the things this version was supposed to address.

Critical Mass 0.9.10 doesn't work, download: "Critical Masses: critter-0.99.dmg" instead from the author's site. It works with OSX.

Won't run. Double click the app and it crashes, adding the following line to the crash log file: "dyld: /Volumes/CriticalMass-0.9.10/CriticalMass.app/Contents/MacOS/critter can't open library: /usr/local/lib/libpng.3.dylib (No such file or directory, errno = 2)"

I double click to open the program and it shows the launch square zoom out and then it just sits there and nothing happens. What's up?
